NEWS FROM HOUSES
Chandankiyari
The month of July was memorable for all of us. Three Holy Cross Sisters have started
residing in Chandankiyari. We had the blessing of our new School building-cum-Sisters‟
Residence on 10 July. Fr Woolsie blessed it and celebrated Mass with KC and Sunny.
There were 86 Religious from Dhanbad, Bokaro and Hazaribag. The inauguration of the
School was on 12 July. Dr Kalyan Sen, the Director of CMRI-CFRI, was the Chief
Guest. Our Provincial, Fr James Kalapura, Mrs Anjali Devi Singh Deo, a well known
social activist, Fr Zeff of St Xavier‟s Bokaro, Fr Woolsie, Fr Pius, Sr Keerti and other
Principals and distinguished people were present on this occasion. Present also were a

good number of local people. On that day 27 students of the Spoken English course
received their certificates from the Chief Guest. They sang the welcome song too. Fr KC
was the happiest person on that day. Congratulations to him for his tireless work.
Sunny was often on the move giving recollections and orientation programmes for the
religious, youth and students in various places like Bhojudih, Dhanbad, Mugma,
Ramgarh and Carmel Convent, Digwadih, while KC went to Nirmala Convent,
Govindpur to hear confessions.
- Sunny Jacob
DNS, Digwadih
The School reopened with the usual schedule. Early monsoons had brought in much
needed relief from the heat. The humid and sultry weather continues due to inadequate
rainfall. Emile, the man for all the seasons, was given an affectionate farewell by the
faculty and the students. The void created by Emile‟s absence will be felt during the
school functions and community prayers. We have truly lost our voice! Amal has taken
up responsibility as the community Choirmaster. If all can‟t sing a hymn, we recite!
"Never mind" as the Cardinal says!
Woolsie is back emotionally and physically charged after his well deserved home visit
and the Retreat. Prayers are requested for Vijay‟s eldest sister who went to her heavenly
abode near Hazaribag. He requests your prayers for his other sister who is also ailing with
many complications
Deanery Mahila Sangh gathered in full strength in the campus under the leadership of PP
Stan. Speakers Emile and Edward Kongari stressed on Faith formation in families and
roused their enthusiasm to work for the Lord.
George Thana has become a fitness freak by his daily walks. Come rain or sun George
goes his way. He is an inspiration to the FRI colony elders when he passes by with his
joggers shoes.
Fr Herman Castellino of JEA fame, gave an interesting two-day workshop to our teachers
on Ignatian Pedagogy. His lucid style and practical examples were appreciated by the
faculty. When is the follow up Herman?
Administrator Panneer was busy with the auditors and putting the accounts in order. He
still has not got his normal health back. House minister Amal is nursing him back to
health.
Pius is having painful sessions with his dentist for RCT and other complications. Doctors
have told him that the real cause of his tooth decay is his old age .
Goa
We the three tertians, Tony P, Gyan & Victor, arrived at Pedro Arrupe Institute, Goa,
safely on the 19th of July. The sight of this quiet and calm location has thrilled Tony.
One could see the joy on his face while telling that he found the place where he could
freely go for jogging at any time and in any direction. Tony is the first among the tertians
to see the sunrise in the morning, because he is up much early for his morning walk
around the campus. The on and off rains keep the temperature low and convenient. The
sessions began on the 20 th morning. The total number of tertians has gone up to 18 with a
tertian from USA and another from South Africa. The two Tertian Instructors, Michael
Alosani and Jose Chenga, are geared up to lead the band. All of us are looking forward to
a deeper Ignatian experience in the months to come. During a Eucharistic celebration, Fr
Partric de Mello, the Provincial of Goa, formally welcomed us into the Province. The
first three days were worth as we listened to the grace history of the companions
HLC, Bhubaneswar
- Victor Joseph
After his retreat, Fr James Tharaniyil, has taken over as the Administrator and is
making preparation for the next Spoken English courses that begin in September, after
the current courses conclude.
Br Jerome is supervising the seven basti schools as well as teaching and handling the
audio-visuals in the Spoken English classes. He is also developing his motorcycle skills
in order to get his driving license.
Ed finished another Personality Development course on the 16 th and will start another on
the 26 th of this month.
Fr Victor Joseph left us on 16 July for tertianship. During the three months he was with
us, Victor was a steadying influence during a difficult time as there were several teachers
sick or absent for various reasons. Victor‟s help was most appreciated and he endeared
himself to many.
- Edward H McGrath
LCE
The new B Ed session 2004-05 started on 29 June with 100 students on the roll. The
National Council for Teachers Education has approved the increase of another 20 seats
from the present academic year. Earlier we were allowed to admit only 80 students. We
have 53 Christian students in this batch of which 18 are religious. The three Jamshedpur
Jesuit Scholastics Arul, Jaison and Birender have brought a lot of active enthusiasm
into the LCE Jesuit Community. Saby from Loyola School, Jamshedpur was the resource
person for a well organized Orientation Programme on 28 June. Arul is quite active
displaying various aspects of the life of St Ignatius on the bulletin board to acquaint the

students with his life and spirituality. All the faculty members actively contributed to the
teaching skills training during the one week Micro-teaching workshop that was held from
12-19 July. The students put up a delightful cultural programme on 10 July to mark the
inauguration of the academic session.
The staff and the students felicitated Gilbert on 20 July, his birthday. The evening
brought a few of his close friends for a get-together.
The summer holidays took Victor on his home leave but he had to cut short his vacation
to respond to the new directives of the HRD Ministry of Jharkhand Government
regarding the new admission policy in teachers training institutes in the State. That time
was utilized by Gilbert to organize two 12-day workshops for in-service students of
IGNOU B Ed.
A new concrete basketball court is getting ready and should be available for use from the
beginning of August.
Loyola, Bhubaneswar
- Gilbert D’Souza
With the second Saturday of July came the most favourite day of the week for students of
Std III to VII – some 800 plus – classes in Special Activity – martial arts in karate, the
fine arts in art and painting, Oddissi dance, Hindustani vocal music, key board and guitar
classes and the School band. From 8 to 12, the students move in an atmosphere of fun
and freedom. If they are not attending classes in Special Activity, they are out playing.
It‟s a day when they are allowed to come in casuals with just tiffin and a water bottle. For
the students of 7 and 8, remedial and enrichment classes are conducted with more time
given to individualized instruction. On the 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th Saturdays of the month, Loyola
is a bee hive of fun filled activity that stretches over four hours.
Just before Sch Donald D’Silva left for VJ, Delhi, he left his mark on our newly
constructed concrete basketball court. He spent hours under the scorching sun painting
the lines of the court. Thank you, Don, for now every evening we have a group playing
on the court – even when there is a drizzle – a rare sight in these parts!
Also just before he could leave for his Tertianship in Goa, Tony P Raj conducted a oneday
course in IPP for the 20 new teachers we recruited in the past few months. Thank
you, Tony, for putting our teachers through this Jesuit orientation.
The icing on the cake came in the visit of Br Wency. He went round the classes teaching
“Soldier Saint” in preparation for Loyola Day on 30 July to the three new sections of Std
IV and was amazed to see how well the School choir still remembered and could sing
Soldier Saint in voices – just the way he had taught them a year ago! One girl from Std
IV came to the office and asked whether she could speak to Br Wency. Over the
intercom she told him, “Br, I liked that Noble Knight hymn so much. Thank you for

teaching it to us”. Beautiful, isn‟t it, Wency, to hear these words coming from the young
and innocent!
Br Vally continues to find work for himself. The second computer lab with 25 more
computers has been set up, complete with LAN connections and air-conditioning with
side partitions for the students to work in privacy! With two phases of the building
incomplete, plenty of rainwater used to come in through the corridor and flow down the
stairs. Messy, to say the least! Now, we have awnings made of blue fiberglass to keep the
rain out and at the same time give those portions of the incomplete building a 5-Star look!
If that was not enough, Vally has now set up in the Office a First Aid Box – painted in
bright white enamel paint – fitted on to the wall – three feet by three feet – with little
pigeon holes to hold different types of medication from Savlon to ointments to tablets,
from bandage to band aid. On the inner surface of the door is a list prepared by a doctor
defining the ailment – the dosage to be given for child or adult. Another very professional
touch to a very important aspect of health care
- Eric Cassel
Loyola, Jamshedpur
Victor Prasad joined the Community on 2 July. He took a few days break before starting
his work officially. Br K T Jose took the opportunity of accompanying the Provincial
and others to a trip to Dhanbad area. He liked the places he visited and was quite
impressed by the work. Jerry gave a weekend retreat to the High School girls of Sacred
Heart Convent. Victor assisted him.
Shreshto Bannerjee, a Class XII student of Loyola, represented the country at the Global
Young Leaders Conference in the USA on 24 July. He was one of the 360 students from
75 countries who were selected on the basis of academic performance and leadership
qualities.
Alex has settled down as the Director of LCC and is slowly trying to give certain stability
to the functioning of the Centre. Victor started teaching at LCC from 12 July.
Saby and Victor visited a new school at Mango area and are trying hard to get a few
more schools for membership to JYOTI.
This year Loyola Hall has a total number of 43 Candidates of whom 19 belong to
Jamshedpur, one to the Diocese and the rest to Hazaribag Province. 20 first-year
Candidates have already secured admission to the Plus II in Karim City College.
- C Gautam
PS: At the Community Mass on 29 July, presided over by the Rector, Fr Oscar Horo, Fr
Manu Parappuram was welcomed to the Community and Fr Gautam and Br Wency
D’Souza were given a prayerful farewell with gratitude for the years of service to the
Province and the Community while they stayed at Loyola.

Lupungutu
The month of July was marked with lots of activities in LPG Community and in the
Kolhan area. Jesuits of the area gathered on 8 & 18 July to follow up the Province
Planning Assembly. 27 Jesuits from different Houses sat together to prioritise the plans
proposed for Kolhan for the next few years. Fr Mike T Raj coordinated the meeting and
gave a new direction to our mission in this area. The meeting was marked by new
enthusiasm and zeal.
Br Pascal, Frs Mike Tirkey and Raphael were busy in the work of demarcation of our
LPG land. The demarcation is over now and Br Pascal has accelerated the work of
building the girls‟ hostel and „China Wall‟ around the hostel kitchen and farmhouse.
Frs Mike T Raj, Mike Tirkey, Clement and Alfred are busy with the „Matric Pass
Abhiyan‟. Under their guidance, coaching classes for NOIS students are regularly held on
Tuesdays and Sundays in five different centres. Around 229 students have enrolled
themselves for the NOIS examinations this year. Frs Mike Tirkey and Mike T Raj
organized Youth Leadership Camps, in Nugdi on the 11 th and in Barkela on the 18 th of
July. TRTC also organised a one-day capacity building training for supervisors on 11
July.
During this monsoon season, Frs Clement, Paul, Romanus and Sch Manoj are busy
planting trees in their respective areas. Frs Raphael and Romanus stole time out of their
busy schedule to give retreats to Sisters of St Ann‟s and Missionaries of Charity,
respectively.
The Community was blessed with the visit of Frs John Guidera and S Tony Raj.
Deacon Blacius left for Khashpur, Patna, for the comprehensive exams while Sch
Roshan Kiro left for his B Ed exams. The Community gave a „bhawbhinee‟ farewell to
Fr Joe Surin on 13 July. Mr Mohan Singh Sundi joined the hostel as a Hostel Master to
assist Sch Manoj.
Fr John Deeney, hearing about the serious condition of his sister (nun), left for the USA
at the end of last month, and arrived there before she expired. We remembered her in our
prayers.
- Alfred & Manoj
Rugudisai
We lost our Catechist Andrias Barla. He had cerebral malaria and was admitted in a
hospital in a state of coma on 25 May. Seeing no improvement we took him back home
and on 11 June he died peacefully at home. Many thanks to Fr Sangram and Sisters from
Bonua and Keonjhar who regularly visited him and financially helped him in my absence.
He is survived by his wife, one son and two daughters.

Three boys of our School could not get admission into the nearby government school
because the District Inspector refused to give the required permission. But our constant
visits to the office at last bore fruit and now the children are happy in their new school.
- John Sumbrui
Sitagarha
Our three Juniors arrived here safe and sound on 30 June, to begin their Juniorate on the
following day. As part of their Orientation to the Juniorate, I conducted a day of icebreaker
games – much appreciated by one and all. We have 19 Juniors from five different
Provinces.
While Ajay Topwar looks after the Juniorate choir and the Parish Youth Ministry,
Joycharan Kandian takes care of manual works and Pascal Dhanwar is the games
master. These three men have settled down nicely to the daily round of the Juniorate
duties.
Joycharan Kandian was operated on for a sty in his right eye. He is recovering.
XLRI
The new Director Fr. Casimir Raj attended the annual conference of the International
Association of Jesuit Business Schools, held in the famous 'Deusto', Jesuit University,
sanctified by the famous Jesuit receptionist, Blessed Francis Garate, shortly to be
canonized. Deusto is the biggest Jesuit University in Spain with 16,000 students and a
substantial Jesuit community. The conference was held from 11 to 14 July and its topic
was Marketing, Pedagogical, Ethical and Technological Aspects. The participants were
all lay professors, apart from three Jesuits, all from India, Frs Casimir, C.L. George and
Aveline D'Souza from Bangalore. After the conference there was a pilgrimage to Loyola,
where our Founder convalesced from his shattered leg.
XITE, Institute for Tribal Education, the XLRI Community's social work, formally
opened on 10 July with 52 tribal students who had been carefully selected by a written
test and an interview. They will be prepared for the Bachelor of Business Education
degree which will enable them to compete for various competitive exams, including
XLRI's own entrance exam. The Institute is housed in accommodation, made available by
Tata Steel in Gamharia. The Director, Fr P D Thomas will gradually move there on a
permanent basis, though he will remain a member of our Community and conduct
courses and MDPs in the Institute.
Fr Augustine spent some days looking after his sister, a nun in Mysore who had come to
our area for vocation promotion. Then, nature protested by laying him low for a week or
so with viral fever. However, such is Augustine's resilience that he was back in action
within four or five days.

Fr V C George was requested by Tata Steel to conduct sessions in Business Ethics in
their collieries area in West Bokaro. All this is to commemorate the birth centenary of
JRD Tata, a man renowned for his insistence on Ethics. George returned very satisfied
with the interest displayed by his participants.
Theo had to spend about 10 days in TMH being treated for very high BP. He is now back
and slowly recovering his strength.
