Three boys of our School could not get admission into the nearby government school
because the District Inspector refused to give the required permission. But our constant
visits to the office at last bore fruit and now the children are happy in their new school.
Our three Juniors arrived here safe and sound on 30 June, to begin their Juniorate on the
following day. As part of their Orientation to the Juniorate, I conducted a day of icebreaker
games – much appreciated by one and all. We have 19 Juniors from five different
Provinces.
While Ajay Topwar looks after the Juniorate choir and the Parish Youth Ministry,
Joycharan Kandian takes care of manual works and Pascal Dhanwar is the games
master. These three men have settled down nicely to the daily round of the Juniorate
duties.
Joycharan Kandian was operated on for a sty in his right eye. He is recovering.
The new Director Fr. Casimir Raj attended the annual conference of the International
Association of Jesuit Business Schools, held in the famous 'Deusto', Jesuit University,
sanctified by the famous Jesuit receptionist, Blessed Francis Garate, shortly to be
canonized. Deusto is the biggest Jesuit University in Spain with 16,000 students and a
substantial Jesuit community. The conference was held from 11 to 14 July and its topic
was Marketing, Pedagogical, Ethical and Technological Aspects. The participants were
all lay professors, apart from three Jesuits, all from India, Frs Casimir, C.L. George and
Aveline D'Souza from Bangalore. After the conference there was a pilgrimage to Loyola,
where our Founder convalesced from his shattered leg.
XITE, Institute for Tribal Education, the XLRI Community's social work, formally
opened on 10 July with 52 tribal students who had been carefully selected by a written
test and an interview. They will be prepared for the Bachelor of Business Education
degree which will enable them to compete for various competitive exams, including
XLRI's own entrance exam. The Institute is housed in accommodation, made available by
Tata Steel in Gamharia. The Director, Fr P D Thomas will gradually move there on a
permanent basis, though he will remain a member of our Community and conduct
courses and MDPs in the Institute.
Fr Augustine spent some days looking after his sister, a nun in Mysore who had come to
our area for vocation promotion. Then, nature protested by laying him low for a week or
so with viral fever. However, such is Augustine's resilience that he was back in action
within four or five days.
