Goa We the three tertians, Tony P, Gyan & Victor, arrived at Pedro Arrupe Institute, Goa, safely on the 19th of July. The sight of this quiet and calm location has thrilled Tony. One could see the joy on his face while telling that he found the place where he could freely go for jogging at any time and in any direction. Tony is the first among the tertians to see the sunrise in the morning, because he is up much early for his morning walk around the campus. The on and off rains keep the temperature low and convenient. The sessions began on the 20 th morning. The total number of tertians has gone up to 18 with a tertian from USA and another from South Africa. The two Tertian Instructors, Michael Alosani and Jose Chenga, are geared up to lead the band. All of us are looking forward to a deeper Ignatian experience in the months to come. During a Eucharistic celebration, Fr Partric de Mello, the Provincial of Goa, formally welcomed us into the Province. The first three days were worth as we listened to the grace history of the companions HLC, Bhubaneswar - Victor Joseph After his retreat, Fr James Tharaniyil, has taken over as the Administrator and is making preparation for the next Spoken English courses that begin in September, after the current courses conclude. Br Jerome is supervising the seven basti schools as well as teaching and handling the audio-visuals in the Spoken English classes. He is also developing his motorcycle skills in order to get his driving license. Ed finished another Personality Development course on the 16 th and will start another on the 26 th of this month. Fr Victor Joseph left us on 16 July for tertianship. During the three months he was with us, Victor was a steadying influence during a difficult time as there were several teachers sick or absent for various reasons. Victor‟s help was most appreciated and he endeared himself to many. - Edward H McGrath LCE The new B Ed session 2004-05 started on 29 June with 100 students on the roll. The National Council for Teachers Education has approved the increase of another 20 seats from the present academic year. Earlier we were allowed to admit only 80 students. We have 53 Christian students in this batch of which 18 are religious. The three Jamshedpur Jesuit Scholastics Arul, Jaison and Birender have brought a lot of active enthusiasm into the LCE Jesuit Community. Saby from Loyola School, Jamshedpur was the resource person for a well organized Orientation Programme on 28 June. Arul is quite active displaying various aspects of the life of St Ignatius on the bulletin board to acquaint the
students with his life and spirituality. All the faculty members actively contributed to the teaching skills training during the one week Micro-teaching workshop that was held from 12-19 July. The students put up a delightful cultural programme on 10 July to mark the inauguration of the academic session. The staff and the students felicitated Gilbert on 20 July, his birthday. The evening brought a few of his close friends for a get-together. The summer holidays took Victor on his home leave but he had to cut short his vacation to respond to the new directives of the HRD Ministry of Jharkhand Government regarding the new admission policy in teachers training institutes in the State. That time was utilized by Gilbert to organize two 12-day workshops for in-service students of IGNOU B Ed. A new concrete basketball court is getting ready and should be available for use from the beginning of August. Loyola, Bhubaneswar - Gilbert D’Souza With the second Saturday of July came the most favourite day of the week for students of Std III to VII – some 800 plus – classes in Special Activity – martial arts in karate, the fine arts in art and painting, Oddissi dance, Hindustani vocal music, key board and guitar classes and the School band. From 8 to 12, the students move in an atmosphere of fun and freedom. If they are not attending classes in Special Activity, they are out playing. It‟s a day when they are allowed to come in casuals with just tiffin and a water bottle. For the students of 7 and 8, remedial and enrichment classes are conducted with more time given to individualized instruction. On the 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th Saturdays of the month, Loyola is a bee hive of fun filled activity that stretches over four hours. Just before Sch Donald D’Silva left for VJ, Delhi, he left his mark on our newly constructed concrete basketball court. He spent hours under the scorching sun painting the lines of the court. Thank you, Don, for now every evening we have a group playing on the court – even when there is a drizzle – a rare sight in these parts! Also just before he could leave for his Tertianship in Goa, Tony P Raj conducted a oneday course in IPP for the 20 new teachers we recruited in the past few months. Thank you, Tony, for putting our teachers through this Jesuit orientation. The icing on the cake came in the visit of Br Wency. He went round the classes teaching “Soldier Saint” in preparation for Loyola Day on 30 July to the three new sections of Std IV and was amazed to see how well the School choir still remembered and could sing Soldier Saint in voices – just the way he had taught them a year ago! One girl from Std IV came to the office and asked whether she could speak to Br Wency. Over the intercom she told him, “Br, I liked that Noble Knight hymn so much. Thank you for
