With the change of guard, DN Bhavan was bustling with activity in the month of April. George
Fernandes took over as Director of DN Branch Schools on 3 April. The month also witnessed a
series of emotional farewells for the outgoing Director, Kuruvilla. Kuru is busy with the Inter-
School Competitions and Parents Night (27 & 28 April) and other activities. George is getting
acquainted with the Branch Schools. He has already completed one round of visits, besides a few
Managing Committee meetings.
DN Branches had the honour of having George Hess, the founder Director, amidst them. On 18
April, the alumni of DNS Digwadih hosted dinner in his honour. Incidentally, it served as a
launching pad for Dhanbad chapter of the Alumni Association. It was attended by about 150
people, including a few Jesuits. Besides George Hess, Saleth, Kuru and George also addressed
the gathering. George Hess visited Mugma and Maithon on 19 April, where he was given grand
LCE
- George Joseph

The staff and students of LCE showed heart warming enthusiasm in responding generously at the
blood donation camp organised in the College on 20 March.
A novel approach was initiated by Victor and the faculty to bring alive the curriculum through a
one-act play competition on 27 March. The script writing, direction and the acting on relevant
curricular themes were done by the students themselves. This was a rare occasion when all the
80 students appeared on the stage.
The entrance test for the fresh batch 2002-03 was conducted at Loyola School on 6 April in
which 875 students appeared. Interviews were held on 22 & 23 April.
In the discouraging times of employment opportunities, the students of the College found new
signs of hope when the Atomic Energy Education Trust from Bombay conducted campus
selection on 8 April.
Presently the College final test is in progress and the academic session 2001-02 will end on 30
April. While the Scholastics are following the College routine faithfully, Gilbert stole some time
from his busy schedule to conduct a two-day seminar on "Enhancing Teacher Effectiveness" to
40 teachers at Purulia at the beginning of April. These teachers came from St Xavier's School,
Purulia and Sacred Heart School, Adra. He also helped the management of St Robert's School,
Parsudih, in the recruitment of some teachers.
A two-day orientation programme will be conducted for the academic counselors associated with
IGNOU B Ed programme by the School of Education of IGNOU on 1 & 2 May at LCE.
two more teachers will join in June.
The new regent, Valerian Mendonca has taken Staney's place. Both Staney and John were
given a warm send off on 22 April.
The Parents' Orientation Days, for KG and Classes I to VI, were held on 13th and 20th of April,
respectively.
The new academic year has brought in a lot of appreciation from the parents. Loyola is set to
host the first Summer Day Camp for the children. 300 children have registered their names. The
package includes art and craft, snack making, CD viewing, clay modelling, acting, public
speaking, debate, dance, music and field visits. A team of teachers and resource persons will lead
the children to an exciting learning experience.

Mass of the Holy Spirit for Catholic students and their parents was celebrated on 7 April by
Rector Vatta. In his moving homily, he exhorted the Catholic parents to love their children and
to practise Christian values in their homes. Minister Maxi provided food packets for all.
Earlier, on the same day, Fr Bernard Surin was installed as the new Parish Priest, in the
presence of the Provincial and the Rector, by Fr George Manna, VG. The parishioners gave a
tearful farewell to Stan Kujur. He will be remembered affectionately by the flock for spreading
the devotion of Veilankanni and Child Jesus.
Fr Bernard Surin was also given a warm welcome by the Community.
Fr Swami made a fruitful retreat at XLRI. "It was an enriching experience. The weather was
very cool there and I did not even use the fan", says he.
Canara Bank, Loyola Extension Counter, has been serving the School for nearly 25 years. It has
been elevated as a full-fledged branch. Henceforth, it will be known as Canara Bank, Loyola
School Branch. On 29th of this month, it was moved to a more spacious place allocated to them,
next to the alumni/ae office, on the first floor above the garage.
The "Millennium Storey" on the Golden Jubilee Block is complete. The KG-E and Std I-E
classes, which were housed in the old cycle shed block, have been shifted to the Junior School
building. The inauguration will be done by Mr B Muthuraman, MD Tata Steel, on Friday, 2
May. Rector Vatta is busy giving a new look to the campus by getting the School building
painted.
the holy city, for a dip in the Ganges. Fr Thana held the fort during his absence.
Judge in choosing Mr and Miss Freshers.
on Easter Sunday. Dr Dubey with his team of 15 doctors and 8 volunteers examined and
distributed medicine to over 1200 patients.

LCC
All Fools Day was not a fooling day for the staff of LCC. It turned out to be a very serious day
for them. Easter Monday, 1 April 2002, was the day well spent by the teachers of LCC in a oneday
seminar conducted by Sr Flavian, AC, of the Carmel School, Sonari, with the aim of
instilling in them motivational and attitudinal values in their teaching profession. At the end of
the seminar, the teachers expressed their indebtedness and gratitude to Sr Flavian for her quality
input sessions.
Both our boys' and girls' basketball teams shone well in the Inter-School Basketball Tournament
organised by St Mary's Parish unit of CAJ on 5, 6 & 7 April at the JRD Tata Sports Complex.
While the boys' team emerged winners of the championship, the girls' team became runners up
losing to Sacred Heart School team in the finals. While the boys' winning was a forgone
conclusion, the girls' team coached by Sch Rakesh Kandulana achieved the feat of reaching the
finals for the first time in their caging career. For all of them it was a thrilling experience to have
played in the finals. Kudos to Rakesh.
CRI Meet at Loyola School
- Francis Perumalil
The Jamshedpur unit of CRI had the gathering here on Sunday, 4 April. Altogether about 30
women religious from various Communities and three Jesuits, including the Provincial, were
present.
The speaker for this gathering was Fr Theo Mathias, who spoke for 40 minutes with depth of
faith from his heart. The topic was "The gift of Resurrection according to a man of faith". While
exposing his thoughts, he highlighted the fact ... the truth and the reality of Jesus' death and
resurrection to which we are the witnesses today. The witnessing, he emphasised, must continue
through our life and service in the context of our reality in Jamshedpur. He concluded his talk
with a beautiful prayer, which was the climax of his faith.
The talk was followed by half an hour of discussion based on two related questions proposed by
the speaker. After the discussion, the group came together to meet the Lord in the breaking of
bread.
Fr Augustine Vattamattam and Br Maxi deserve a big thank you for being wonderful hosts to
the guests and for taking care of the material needs of the participants.
Fr Alex Mascarenhas "officially" took over as the new Headmaster of the School on 1 April.
His predecessor, Fr George Fernandes, left for Dhanbad on 3 April. The School and the
Community sincerely thank him for his untiring service to the School.
Benedict was installed as the Parish Priest of St Paul's Parish, Bordor, and Timothy Kiro that of
Bhoya Parish, on 7 April. On the same day, the Bordor parishioners gave Greg a fond farewell.
The people almost shed tears. It is so because Greg, like a good shepherd, cared for his people.
We had a thanksgiving Mass on 9 April to thank Greg and the Lord. Greg left for Amda on 13
From Rome
- Augustine Surin
Here I am fine. For Easter, I was in Gallarate, near Milan. It is a Jesuit parish. I went there to
hear confessions. There were always people for confessions. We had a nice Easter celebration. I
returned here on Tuesday. When we returned, we were very sad to hear about the death of two
Jesuits, one in Bellarmino, the other at Gregorian. Fr Rula, the founder of Rula School of
Psychology died on 1 April. He had taught Bishop Felix and others. On 2 April, Fr Giuseppe
Bartoli, a member of our Community died. He said the morning Mass. Then by 11 a.m. we found
him with the Lord. He was supposed to distribute our letters. The parlour boy called him when
the letters arrived. He didn't respond. When the Rector went to his room he found him quiet. We

were really shocked. He was a very nice person, always ready to help. Today we had the funeral.
Archbishop Pitau was the main celebrant. We, the Community, will miss a great person. May he
rest in peace.
