LCCC, Bhubaneswar A professional and critical evaluation of the Centre was done by Fr. George Ponodath, S.J., Director, EMRC Kolkata. His report was studied in a meeting of the Jamshedpur Communications Commission in October. Suggestions for improvement are being implemented. George is accompanying a team of Christian photographers from five countries on a Christian photographic tour of Meghalaya and Nagaland. Photographic work of this group has appeared and will appear in several Christian publications and promotional events. Loyola Hospital – Sr Smitha, S.SpS, has joined the Community as Superior. Sr Amrita, S.SpS, has joined as pharmacist. Two additional doctors have joined the staff of the Hospital. The second phase of construction has been contracted for. Additional equipment has been funded by several agencies and some doctors. The blessing and inauguration of the Sisters‟ Convent by Archbishop Most Rev Raphael Cheenath, SVD was held in October. LCE - George A Hess The first block of practice teaching of the present B Ed batch is going on in 18 schools of Jamshedpur. All the faculty members together with Victor and Gilbert visit these schools for supervision of the teaching sessions of the student-teachers. The Schs Arul, Jaison and Birendra seem to enjoy their teaching experiences. The Diwali celebration organized by the students with various dances and other cultural items proved to be a delightful event. The new basketball court in the College campus is now fully ready for use. We like to believe that it will be well used once the students return from their practice teaching sessions. Victor is happy to have the Tata Sumo vehicle back having almost the original look after the repair it had to go through due to the accident. Victor is putting in his best efforts to activate the Alumni Association of the College. He saw that the College was well represented in the National Jesuit Alumni Congress in Jamshedpur at the end of October. Loyola School, Bhubaneswar - Gilbert D’Souza We closed out October on a happy note! Loyola, Bhubaneswar, was granted Affiliation to the Council for the ICSE, New Delhi. The fact that Mr F Fanthome, the Chief Executive and Secretary for the Council, himself visited and inspected Loyola, made an inspection by another Head of an ICSE school redundant! The first batch of 42 will now appear in the year 2007.
Towards the fag end of October, Eric had to travel all the way to Hyderabad. He was operated upon at The Asian Institute for Gastroenterology for “esophagal reflux”. The operation - Endoscopic Balloon Dilatation – was performed to “stretch” the sphincter muscle that pushes the food down into the stomach. The technique is almost similar to the one used to remove a blockage in the arteries of the heart. He is back to “basics” learning how to chew his food well and thoroughly before swallowing it down. November brought us more comforting news in the visit of Provincial James. In a meeting with John Guidera, Br. Vally and Br Oscar Rodericks he took time to “review the situation” before giving us the “go ahead” to hike fees and salaries. In less than 4 years the School has grown in numbers but the pay check for the teachers and workers is the slimmest ever! A letter to the parents has already gone out to this effect. A tidal wave of protests is inevitable! Diwali was made more sparkling for us this year when Loyola Educational Society was granted Form U/s 80-G. Hopefully, it will make it easier for LES to raise funds at the local and corporate level. Vally took time off during a lull in school life to make his retreat in Loyola Bhavan under the direction of Fr S Tony. Hardly had he unpacked his bag, Eric took off to Hyderabad to attend the Heads of ICSE Schools Meet. The best way to see India – “ek dam”, free, or almost - become the Head of one of our ICSE schools! Loyola School, Jamshedpur - Eric B Cassel School & Community- Our Campus was all decked up to host JAAI Milan (29-31 October), the national meet of Jesuit Alumni. It was a time of renewing old friendships, making new ones and getting the feel of belonging to the huge and diverse Jesuit Family. Our campus became the melting pot for the 500 odd participants. Kudos to Fr Augustine Vattamattam and his team for the successful organization of the mega event. School reopened on 1 November and with that began the lively practices for the Sports Day. It's a pleasant sight to see the entire School, in different groups, practicing drills, exercises, march-past etc. Practice makes a man perfect, seems to be the motto of the dedicated teachers who are working towards the Magis. Best of luck to them. Like previous years, this year too there has been a rush for the KG and Plus Two forms. 1100 forms have been bought by anxious parents for the 225 seats available in KG. For the 250 seats in Plus Two, 692 forms have been bought. The competition seems to get tougher every year. A team of doctors from Tata Main Hospital was there on 8 November to conduct a cancer awareness programme for our students. Our students benefited much from the informative sessions.
