Understanding the importance of environmental education,
Alan Hassenfeld supports a rain water harvesting program in
dozens of schools throughout the city – in both Jewish and
Arab neighborhoods – educating the next generation to be
environmentally responsible.
The Hassenfelds have left an indelible mark on Jerusalem's
cultural landscape with their stalwart support for the excavation
and renovation of the Merrill Hassenfeld Amphitheater (also
known locally as the Sultan's Pool), named after the patriarch
of the family Merrill Hassenfeld, who passed away in 1979.
The Merrill Hassenfeld Amphitheater, with the magnificent
Old City walls as a backdrop, has been enchanting Jerusalem's
residents and visitors for decades.
Most recently, Alan Hassenfeld has spearheaded worldwide
efforts to build Teddy Park, in celebration of Teddy’s life and
to honor all those who helped build modern-day Jerusalem.
The park lies in what was formerly "no man's land," between
east and west Jerusalem and is developing into a beautiful and
welcoming destination point; a symbol of unity and a gathering
place for all of Jerusalem's residents. At the Park’s center, Alan
has dedicated the Sylvia Hassenfeld Family Fountain, a sound
and light water fountain that is the first of its kind in Israel.
Alan Hassenfeld's philanthropic support continues through
his work as Chairman of the Hassenfeld Family Foundation
Initiatives, promoting human rights, empowering women in
developing countries, and undertaking initiatives to improve
the economy, education, and business opportunities in Rhode
Island, his home state. Alan is a graduate of the University
of Pennsylvania and is the recipient of numerous honorary
doctorates from renowned universities.
Alan is following in the footsteps of his father, Merrill and his
mother Sylvia – may she celebrate with us in Jerusalem for many
years to come. The Hassenfeld Family has set philanthropic
standards worldwide and remains a role model to this day. Alan
and his family's love for Jerusalem, Israel and its people knows
no bounds and he believes passionately in building a Jerusalem,
and a State of Israel, that will truly be a light unto the nations.
