From Personal to Global: Tisha B’Av
Commemoration in Santa Fe
By Tori Lee
The Jewish community in Santa
Fe observed Tisha b’Av by studying
sacred text, reading poetry,
and looking inward. On Erev Tisha
b’Av at HaMakom, Rabbi Malka
Drucker spoke on the historical
context of Tisha b’Av with particular
emphasis on the destruction of the
Second Temple in 69/70 C.E. While
Roman soldiers were the agents of
that destruction, the reason behind
the destruction was si’nat chinam
or baseless hatred of one person
Greetings
towards another.
She then led community members
in a candlelight reading of Megillat
Eicha (Lamentations). Rabbi Drucker
reminded the community that the
sages recognized the need for people
By Rabbi Deborah J. Brin
Every time we come to the end of
one of the Books of the Torah, we say
“chazak, chazak, v’nitchazayk” from
strength to strength, we are strengthened.
Our Albuquerque Jewish
community is stronger and healthier
because of one of its newest organizations,
the Rabbinical and Cantorial
Association [RACAA].
Meeting monthly, RACAA
members are convinced that the
entire community benefits from
increased communication and cooperation.
We endeavor to use our organization
to build a stronger Jewish community;
to address community concerns;
to study together and provide
collegial support for each other.
RACAA acts as a liaison and representative
to the larger Albuquerque
and New Mexico communities as
needed.
In 2006, three congregations
decided to conduct joint Shavuot
and Selichot services, and its clergy
members began to plan these events
together. With a small amount of
urging on my part, we began meeting
regularly to discuss issues of mutual
concern.
With the support of my colleagues,
RACAA began officially in
December 2008. Our initial membership
consisted of: Rabbi Joe Black
and Cantor Barbara Finn from Congregation
Albert; Rabbi Min Kantrowitz
from Jewish Family Service
of New Mexico; Rabbi Arthur Flicker
and Cantor Caitlin Bromberg from
Congregation B’nai Israel and me,
Rabbi Deborah Brin, from Congregation
Nahalat Shalom.
Our membership has changed as
rabbis and cantors move into and out
of our community. It is with pleasure
that we welcome our three new
members: Rabbi Harry Rosenfeld,
from Congregation Albert; Rabbi
Stephen Landau from the Solomon
Schechter Day School; and Rabbi
Paul Citrin, recently retired from
Temple Beth El in Las Cruces and
former senior rabbi at Congregation
Albert.
We have discussed many communal
issues, and we will continue to
NG IN THIS SPACE
to mourn both personal losses as well
as national and historical catastrophes.
Community members shared
their own understandings of kinnot
(dirges or elegies) through the poetry
of Leonard Cohen, a kinnah for Holocaust
victims written by the Bobover
Rav, Rabbi Shlomo Halberstam (z”l),
and a Yiddish song commemorating
the victims of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist
Factory fire.
Always the question to be asked
is not why did this happen but rather
what do we learn from our shared
and personal Tisha b’Av? How
should we respond to our losses? We
cannot simply move on, as though
our mourning is of no consequences,
but we can move forward.
On Tisha b’Av, members of Kol
do so as they arise. For instance, we
met with the chaplains at UNM Hospital
and with some of the directors
at the various funeral homes in Albuquerque
to ensure that they understand
and are equipped to respond to
Jewish religious and cultural issues.
We talked about how to handle
indigent burials as well as how to
best respond to emergency tzedakah
beRamah gathered throughout the
day to read kinnot and discuss Rabbi
Dov Soleveitchik’s writings of death.
Daniel Israel led the study of portions
of the Shulhan Aruch pertaining
to the laws of personal mourning
and how they differ from mourning
on Tisha b’Av.
The day of reflection ended with
community members participating in
a global Tisha b’Av event sponsored
by the Chofetz Chaim Heritage Foundation,
Building Our World.” Noted Torah
scholars HaRav Yaakov Hillel and
Rabbi Eli Mansour spoke forcefully
We have put a lot of energy into
understanding the relationships,
interactions, roles and functions of
the various organizations within our
community, including the Jewish
Community Center, the Jewish Federation
of New Mexico, Jewish Family
Service, Schechter Day School, the
congregations, and the chavurot.
Kol beRamah President Daniel Israel leads a Tisha b’Av Talmud study
session on the Laws of Mourning in the Shulhan Aruch.
on the consequences of machloket or
quarrels and the need to seek shalom
in all one’s relationships.
Participants were reminded of
the unprecedented negative consequences
of machloket including
the destruction of the Second
Temple and centuries of exile. The
conflict between Korah and Moses
in Numbers 16-17 serves as an
example of the destructive nature of
machloket.
Repeatedly, participants around
the world were reminded that the
Once, humanity was all part of the
