HaMakom’s Jewish Film Series
presents
By Marcia Torobin
HaMakom is kicking off the second
season of its Jewish film series
on September 18 with Ahead of
Time, a documentary celebrating
the 99-year-old journalist-extraordinaire,
Ruth Gruber.
With her love of adventure and
fearlessness, Ruth Gruber defied tradition
from the moment she became
the world’s youngest PhD at the age
of 20 in 1931.
Ahead of Time tells Gruber’s remarkable
journey, and the film is the
directorial debut of noted cinematographer
Bob Richman (My Architect,
and An Inconvenient Truth).
Gruber continued to make history
throughout her trail-blazing career
by becoming the first journalist
to enter the Soviet Arctic in 1935.
Chosen by Roosevelt, she escorted
1,000 Holocaust refugees from
Naples to New York in a secret wartime
mission in 1944.
She covered the heart-wrench-
ing ordeal of the refugees aboard the
ship Exodus 1947 with photographs
that helped change the world.
The film comes to Santa Fe after
winning the 2011 Best Documentary
Award at the Denver Jewish
Film Festival, the Miami Jewish Film
Festival and the Palm Beach Jewish
Film Festival. The New York
Times called the film “a graceful
documentary portrait … that illustrates
just how extraordinary (Ms.
Gruber’s) life has been.” Diplomat
Richard Holbrooke said of her: “You
couldn’t even invent Ruth Gruber …
not even in a movie.”
HaMakom’s film series was started
last year with the help of a grant
from the Jewish Federation New
Mexico. The series presents films
about Jewish culture, history, religion,
and the arts. Interviews with
the filmmaker or others associated
with the film follow each screening.
It will be a decidedly New Year
5772 for Congregation Albert, Rabbi
Harry L. Rosenfeld and his wife,
Michele L. Hope. Leading Yom
Tov services for the first time in a
new community, Rosenfeld notes,
brings an extra dimension to the
holidays.
“Michele and I are very excited
about our first High Holy Days at
Congregation Albert and meeting
more members of our new, extended
family,” he said. “To me, a
new year in a new congregation is
an ultimate expression of the deep
purpose of these Days of Awe – reflection
on the past and a commitment
to grow toward the future.”
Rosenfeld and Cantor Barbara
R. Finn will conduct more than a
dozen distinct holiday services
during the four weeks from September
24 to October 20. While
the Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
morning services and the Kol
Nidre service require a ticket for
admission, the family services, the
informal Oak Flats second day of
Rosh Hashanah and the other holidays’
services do not.
“We deliberately structure the
family services and the Oak Flats
service to be musical and very participatory.
We want to encourage
Truly a New Year at Congregation Albert
Ahead of Time
multiple generations to celebrate
holidays together,” Finn commented.
“Our Congregation Albert band
will play at Oak Flats, and our
youth group will have a role in the
Havdalah that follows the Neilah
service on Yom Kippur.” Moreover,
these three community-oriented
services take the awareness
and attention span of younger participants
into consideration.
community rabbi and director of
the Jewish Family Service Community
attend.
Come share your stories and
