YOU ARE WHAT YOU ATE – YOU’LL BECOME WHAT YOU EAT
And I ’ll Bet The Sweeps On That!
By Dr. Andrea Buckett
Toronto – Canada
Q: What is the best type of fat to
cook with? Ryms – Alexandria,
Virginia
AB: Great question, Ryms. The
best fat to cook with is one that
remains stable at medium to high
temperatures. Unfortunately most
of us cook with what we are told
are “healthy” polyunsaturated and
monounsaturated oils (canola,
sunflower, soya, olive). It is the
chemical nature of these mono- and
polyunsaturated fats to be unstable
when heated, creating free radicals
and “trans fatty” like substances. The
fats that are stable when heated are,
in fact, the saturated variety – butter,
lard, coconut. The ones that humans
were consuming for thousands of
years, before the dawn of heart
disease!
Q: What are the benefits of turmeric?
Brook T. – Ottawa, Canada
AB: There are many herbs and spices
that can be incorporated into your
cooking that will enhance well-being
and restore good health. Brook, the
kitchen can truly be your apothecary.
Turmeric is the pinnacle of healthpromoting
spices. Curcumin is
a main medicinal component of
turmeric. A potent antioxidant,
turmeric supports all cellular
functions, boosts immunity, cleanses
circulatory pathways, supports
the skeletal system, and improves
digestion. When purchasing,
ensure it is organic and buy in small
quantities to guarantee its quality.
Q: Can plant sterols help with
seasonal allergies? Kaatje - Zagreb,
Croatia
A.B: Kaatje, plant sterols and
sterolins are found in most fruits,
vegetables and nuts. They are a
compound that have a profound
effect on the immune system
and have the ability to normalize
cholesterol. They were discovered
in 1922 and have thousands of
published medical studies to back up
their effectiveness. The good news
is they can be taken in pill form for
therapeutic purposes. This plant
nutrient normalizes and balances the
release of interleukin 4 and 6, two
immune compounds responsible for
the majority of allergy symptoms.
Q: I’ve heard that springtime is
a good time to cleanse your liver.
What are some foods that help this
process? DPX – Quito, Ecuador
A.B: Considering the liver works
hard year round to keep your body
clean, it is important for you to keep
it in optimal working condition.
Restoring the liver by consuming
medicinal plants is a superb way
to get started. Mostly bitter, these
plants work to decongest the liver
and promote production and flow of
bile through the liver. Liver cleansing
foods include dandelion, spinach,
beets and chicory root. A warm glass
of water with lemon in the morning
is also a great idea, DPX.
