3 Monsters University
n It’s been 12 years since Pixar scored one of its biggest
hits with Monsters, Inc., the story of two beasts, Sulley
and Mike (John Goodman and Billy Crystal), who earn a
living scaring children. That might not sound like it takes a
college degree, but guess what: it does. In this prequel, a
barely legal Sulley and Mike cross paths when they join the
same fraternity. Can you say “keg party”? Hopefully, the
kids who will make this a massive hit can’t—but if Monsters
University is as massive of a success as we predict,
imagine the entire Pixar campus ecstatically doing tequila
shots.
4 Star Trek Into Darkness
5 The Hangover Part III
n In this sequel to 2009’s $257 million hit, the Star Fleet crew
members returns to Earth to find that the fight to protect
space is now being waged on their home planet. All of the
cast returns as does their director J.J. Abrams—though with
the news that Abrams will captain the next Star Wars, this
may be his last trip on the Enterprise. Benedict Cumberbatch,
the leading man in the BBC’s Sherlock, is tight-lipped about
the villain he’ll play, but the Internet is holding its breath that
he could be the infamous Khan. What’s more certain is that
Into Darkness should match, or even slightly beat, the original
film’s substantial haul.
n How serious are the dudes that this is the end of the
Hangover series? Director Todd Phillips has sworn that in this
trilogy capper, someone dies. Sounds like a laugh riot. Phillips
and the Wolf Pack have been hush-hush about what hell
breaks loose in Hangover III, but rumor is the crew makes a pit
stop in Tijuana—oh dear. John Goodman is new to the cast,
but Heather Graham and comedian Mike Epps are scheduled
to return for this final send-off. Despite starring the now Oscar-nominated
Bradley Cooper, we predict that numbers will
stay roughly on target with the rest of the franchise, topping
off in the mid-$200 millions.
