MANDALAY<br />

<strong>The</strong> Queen's Golden Monastery Fort Dufferin and the Royal<br />

Palace<br />

" <strong>The</strong> centre of the universe " King <strong>The</strong>baw and<br />

his Queens.<br />

MANDALAY, founded in 1856, on the left bank of<br />

the Irawadi 315 feet above the sea, by Mindon<br />

Min, to-day spreads over an area measuring about<br />

six miles from north to south, and three miles<br />

from east to west. It is laid out on a grand scale,<br />

with "streets" running north and south, and<br />

"roads" running east and west, and boasts a<br />

double -track electric tramway six miles long.<br />

Near the middle of the city<br />

is Fort Dufferin,<br />

which was formerly called "the city," and in the<br />

centre of the fort stands the Royal Palace. <strong>The</strong><br />

most westerly thoroughfare<br />

is the Strand Road on<br />

the bank of the river, about two miles from the<br />

palace. After leaving the steamer we drove up<br />
