Akyab, situated on an island, is the third port<br />

in <strong>Burma</strong>, ranking after Rangoon and Moulmein.<br />

<strong>The</strong> distances logged between Sandoway and<br />

Kyaukpyu vary, according to whether the " inside "<br />

or "outside" course is<br />

But from Rangoon to Sandoway is<br />

taken, from 88 to 143 miles.<br />

364 miles, and<br />

from Kyaukpyu to Akyab 88 miles ;<br />

while from<br />

Akyab to Chittagong is<br />

194 miles, and from Chittagong<br />

to Calcutta 378 miles.<br />

<strong>The</strong> harbour of Akyab is protected by a line of<br />

reefs, on which is placed the Savage Island lighthouse,<br />

and is entered by<br />

a narrow channel. <strong>The</strong><br />

scenery is very pretty, the fishing-boats with matting<br />

sails very quaint, and the natives have the Chinese<br />

custom of painting eyes on their sampans. <strong>The</strong><br />

ancient capital of Arakan, Myohaung, lies fifty<br />

miles to the north-east on the Kaladan river.<br />

We left Akyab harbour about noon on Monday,<br />
