repainted, the shrine at the north-west base contains<br />

a gilded and glass -jewelled Buddha with a silk<br />

drapery,<br />

while the shrine at the south-west base<br />

covers a similar Buddha and four<br />

others standing<br />

in various attitudes, each with a chhatra over his<br />

head, as well as eight seated Buddhas and two<br />

kneeling elephants. On the southern edge of the<br />

platform is a pavilion covering<br />

a number of carved<br />

and painted wooden figures, some of them, such as<br />

the four beggars, being very fine indeed.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Signal pagoda and the Old pagoda are<br />

uninteresting; but the Kyaikthanlan, or Great,<br />
