Marvellous Mariza
She may be an international
star, but Mariza’s musical
roots are entwined deeply in
fado, Portugal’s haunting and
evocative traditional music.
Born in Mozambique, Mariza
moved to Lisbon at age 3 and
started singing fado in the
family restaurant at age 5. As
a teen, she took a brief detour
into soul, pop and jazz, but
returned to fado a few years
later with the release of her
first album, Fado em Mim.
Despite the fact that she made
the album almost reluctantly –
she didn’t think she was a very
good singer – it was an instant
hit, selling 100,000 copies in
just 10 days. Seven albums
have followed, with sales
topping 1 million. As for her
singing, Mariza has been acclaimed
as one of the greatest
female vocalists of our time.
