OPERA GALA<br />

Feast your senses and revel in <strong>the</strong> sumptuous<br />

world <strong>of</strong> opera as a remarkable cast <strong>of</strong><br />

American opera stars performs well-loved<br />

arias, duets, and ensembles from Verdi’s<br />

La Traviata, Puccini’s Tosca, Wagner’s<br />

Tannhäuser, and many more. The <strong>Festival</strong><br />

Singers, a chorus <strong>of</strong> local vocalists, will join<br />

<strong>the</strong> soloists in several well-known choruses.<br />

The Gala will be accompanied by distinguished<br />

international instrumentalists performing in <strong>the</strong> HIFA 2013<br />

Classical Music Programme, led by pianist Jeanne Minette<br />

Cilliers. Featuring our very own <strong>Festival</strong> Chorus and<br />

supported by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Festival</strong> Ensemble <strong>of</strong> highly acclaimed<br />

musicians. The chorus is directed by Colbert Mp<strong>of</strong>u.<br />

last year, Laquita has led performances with <strong>the</strong> Los Angeles<br />

Opera, San Francisco Opera, Houston Grand Opera, Lyric Opera <strong>of</strong><br />

Chicago, New York City Opera, Washington National Opera, Opéra<br />

Comique in Paris, among many o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

Lynette Tapia (soprano)<br />

“Tapia’s voice is one that I shall remember in this opera for its<br />

sparkle and clarity.”<br />

After winning First Place in <strong>the</strong> Operalia <strong>International</strong> Voice<br />

Competition <strong>of</strong> Placido Domingo, acclaimed Bolivian American<br />

soprano Lynette Tapia has gone on to sing major roles in opera<br />

houses throughout <strong>the</strong> world. Her New York recital debut was<br />

with Marilyn Horne at Carnegie Hall.<br />

Tichina Vaughn (mezzo-soprano)<br />

“<strong>the</strong> "black Venus" Tichina Vaughn bewitched her minstrel with her<br />

charmingly sensual, powerful mezzo and her personal charisma.”<br />

Tichina Vaughn made her Metropolitan Opera debut in Porgy and<br />

Bess and her European debut at <strong>the</strong> Stuttgart State Theatre as<br />

Venus in Tannhäuser. She has been heard in many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> world’s<br />

great opera houses and concert halls and has been particularly<br />

praised for her portrayals <strong>of</strong> Amneris in Aida and Klytemnestra<br />

in Elektra.<br />

Adam Diegel (tenor)<br />

"Adam Diegel was a dashing Cavaradossi, producing soaring high<br />

notes." New York Times<br />

With an impassioned dramatic sense, powerful voice and classic<br />

leading looks Adam’s 2012/2013 season includes performances<br />

at <strong>the</strong> Guangzhou Opera House (China) in Anthony Minghella’s<br />

production <strong>of</strong> Madama Butterfly, and Don José in Carmen at<br />

English National Opera. Past performances include Froh in Das<br />

Rheingold at Metropolitan Opera and Madama Butterfly led by<br />

Plácido Domingo.<br />

Lester Lynch<br />

(Baritone & Project Producer)<br />

in Porgy and Bess, Minnesota Opera w<strong>here</strong> he sang Count de Luna in Il<br />

Trovatore and to Lyric Opera <strong>of</strong> Kansas City as Germont in La Traviata.<br />
