funny series of monologues written by Jane Martin
Show’, ‘Boeing Boeing’) and Chipo Chikara (The Memory
of Water’, ‘The Improv Show’).
warmth and majesty, her fear and frustration, her joy
and sadness, the stellar cast plays 17 different characters;
become and the woman whom you might be right
THE Fire
Crown
Presented by the Indonesian Embassy, The Fire
Crown, is an exciting new and diverse showing of
Indonesia’s most popular arts – dance, masks and
music. A troupe of four performers will present a varied
programme over two shows combining singing,
music playing and pole dancing.
Parang Garudo (1) – Thursday 2 May / This performance will combine
contemporary dance with modified Javanese pop music, accompanied by Gamelan
traditional instruments. Fun and catchy sounds.
This is a fresh, seductive, and poignant
re-imagination of Arthur Miller’s classic
A View To A Bridge. The Immigrants looks
at Zimbabwean immigrants living in the
hub of South Africa, Johannesburg, during
the era of Xenophobia. It is a mixture of
talent, experience, beauty, passion, and
experimentation.
Eddie is a man confused by moral law
and the ambiguity of his own sexual
feelings. He is confronted, as in classical
tragedy, with a situation that he is totally
unprepared for. At the center of his conflict
is the beautiful Cathy, his niece, who is
nearing womanhood and about to start
a career. It is Eddie’s unconscious love for
his niece and uncontrollable jealousy that
eventually destroys his whole family.
Supported by Africalia, the play is
performed by the Bulawayo based
company, Grassroots, who brought the
successful Tomorrow’s People to HIFA 2012,
and is directed by the highly acclaimed
Raisedon Baya.
Ten
Bush
Set in a rural settlement known as Ten
Bush, the play is a dramatic and intensely
visual tale of witchcraft and intrigue,
where witches are set on fire and men
can vomit up snakes and stones. Ten
Bush relies heavily on props and these
are skillfully utilised on a simple and
movable set design. It’s very much an
ensemble piece and the actions of the
actors are mirrored by sound effects
from those who aren’t in the scene at the
time – often with an interesting twist.
Written and directed by Mncedisi Shabangu, from the Market
Theatre in Johannesburg and produced by Daves Guzha of Rooftop
