If one analyses <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>ternal structure of this text, one will f<strong>in</strong>d some<br />

strik<strong>in</strong>g asymmetries. In V 7.42, <strong>the</strong> prices are always given <strong>in</strong> female<br />

animals. One would guess that <strong>the</strong> fees for heal<strong>in</strong>g husb<strong>and</strong>s should be<br />

male animals respectively. However, <strong>in</strong> V 7.41 we f<strong>in</strong>d a quite different<br />

def<strong>in</strong>ition of <strong>the</strong> prices for heal<strong>in</strong>g husb<strong>and</strong>s. Notwithst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong>re are<br />

some clues that h<strong>in</strong>t that <strong>the</strong>re was a version of V 7.41, giv<strong>in</strong>g such prices<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> male equivalents of those applied to wives <strong>in</strong> V 7.42. The passage of<br />

V 9 – referr<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> fees allowed for purification – confirms this<br />

hypo<strong>the</strong>sis.<br />

As seen <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> case of medic<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> fees a priest may dem<strong>and</strong> for<br />

purification also depend here on <strong>the</strong> social status of <strong>the</strong> “patient”. These are<br />

actually exactly <strong>the</strong> male equivalences of <strong>the</strong> prices for heal<strong>in</strong>g wives <strong>in</strong><br />
