LPD production heats up in Pascagoula with LPD 27 Start Fab
Sparks fly as burner workleaderman Paul Bosarge, seated, cuts patterns into a steel plate for LPD 27
during the ship’s start of fabrication Monday, Aug. 6, The milestone event was attended by, from left,
Jake Thomas, manufacturing engineer for Program Executive Office, Ships; Bruce Knowles, LPD 27
program manager; Doug Lounsberry, vice president and program manager, LPD 17 Program; Pat Burlison,
director of Structural Component Fabrication And Assembly; John T. Young Jr., Steel Fabrication Area
superintendent; Jonathan Aguilar, LPD production manager; and Phil Culver, manager of Operations,
shops.
The shipyard just got a whole lot hotter as production heats up on LPD 27.
Paul Bosarge, burner workleaderman, took the controls of the
Avenger 3 plasma cutter Monday and sliced through steel at 45,000
degrees Fahrenheit, cutting parts for the newest San Antonio (LPD
17)-class ship, LPD 27.
Ingalls Shipbuilding marked the first 100 tons of steel cut for the ship
with a Start of Fabrication ceremony on Aug. 6, just days after winning
the $1.5 billion fixed-price incentive contract.
“Today’s ceremony officially recognized the start of fabrication
milestone for the next LPD 17-class landing platform dock, LPD 27,”
said Doug Lounsberry, Ingalls’ vice president and program manager,
LPD 17 Program. “This is the eleventh LPD in what has become a hot
production line.”
Lounsberry said the build strategy for LPD 27 will be the best yet.
Lessons learned and production improvements from previous LPDs
have already been worked into LPD 26 construction and are being rolled
over into LPD 27.
Lounsberry also expressed confidence in the abilities of the
shipbuilding team.
“We’ve got excellent shipbuilders working on these LPDs and their
encouragement and attention to detail continue to produce top quality
products for our sailors and Marines,” Lounsberry said.
Leading the team is LPD 27 Ship Program Manager Bruce Knowles,
a veteran leader in the LPD program with experience leading ship
construction at Avondale and Pascagoula.
“We have the right strategy and we’re ready to fire it up on this ship,”
Knowles said. “The men and women of the craft have shown they want
and deserve this work. Our management team is also ready to ensure
high standards in safety, quality, cost and schedule. This team is ready
as we work toward our upcoming milestones.”
The keel for LPD 27 is scheduled to be laid in the spring of 2013 and
delivery of the 11th LPD is expected in 2017.
Are You Ready?
Computer migration
begins August 16
IT will begin migrating computers from the Northrop
Grumman network to the new Ingalls Shipbuilding network
starting Aug. 16.
This final step in separating from the NG network requires
action by computer users.
Once the migration is complete, users will no longer need to
use Northrop Grumman credentials to log onto a computer.
Instead, they will use the Ingalls credentials established earlier
this year.
The change will also eliminate the need to authenticate in
each application with your Ingalls credentials.
The migration will affect all employees using the Ingalls
Shipbuilding networks and will be implemented during a
four-week period. Nine groups of users have been divided
geographically by buildings, and the estimated schedule and
list of groups can be found on the IT Transition Web Page
available from the company intranet.
IT recommends that employees read and carefully follow
instructions sent through Ingalls Shipbuilding and IT
Communications.
Actions Required:
Users must avoid travel before their group migration
implementation and cut multiple work stations down to a
From STEM to Learn
single location. When employees leave at the end of their shift,
their computers should remain powered on, logged off and
connected to the network. Mass storage devices such as thumb
drives should also be disconnected from computers.
IT will continue to provide details leading up to the
migrations. Call the IT Help Desk with any issues affecting your
system (228) 935-5202 and * for Pascagoula or (504) 654-5212 and
* for Avondale.
On Aug. 16 at 6 p.m. the Northrop Grumman Help Desk
supporting Ingalls will be migrated to the new Ingalls Service
Desk. The new phone number to the IT Help Desk will be
provided in upcoming email and newsletter communications.
What do flavored lip balm, local teachers and engineering have in
common?
These elements and many others came together for a STEM teacher
workshop hosted by Shipbuilding Women Engineers.
SWE conducted its second Science, Technology, Engineering and
Math (STEM) workshop for Jackson County middle and high school
teachers on Friday, July 27.
“We wanted to introduce the teachers to STEM and offer them
hands on lessons that they could take back to their students,” said
Charlotte Merritt, an engineer and SWE member.
Teachers representing several local school districts attended the
event, including Robert Ordhal with Pascagoula Applied Technology
School, Patti Brooks with D’Iberville Middle School, Courtney Caples
with Escatawpa Middle School and Jane Griffis with Magnolia Middle
School.
At the workshop, SWE members engaged the teachers in handson
activities geared toward chemical, civil, electrical and industrial
engineering disciplines.
They taught teachers creative ways to take STEM into their
classrooms with fun activities like creating flavored lip balm, building
a plastic straw structures, creating an electromagnet and building an
airplane with limited material.
During the activities, SWE emphasized Ingalls Shipbuilding
priorities of safety, quality, cost and schedule.
Rick Lane, director of Technical Engineering, gave a presentation
explaining how the shipbuilding industry has a need for all types of
engineers to design the various systems that help the ship perform its
mission.
Lane complimented the teachers on their efforts and stressed the
Engineer and SWE member Davida Cunningham leads a STEM project on Friday,
July 27 for visiting teachers, seated from left, Jane Griffis from Magnolia Middle
School, Patti Brooks from D’Iberville Middle School, Raytheon engineering intern
Genetrice Stevenson, Courtney Caples from Escatawpa Upper Elementary, and
importance of STEM curriculums. “STEM helps to prepare students
for increasing global technology growth,” Lane said.
SWE members Jennifer Childs and Davida Cunningham gave
presentations on the upcoming E-Week canned food drive and
engineering project and highlighted new inventions and the impact of
STEM on social media, entertainment, environmental improvements,
medicine and sports.
Charge Right
Inaccurate time charging can harm Ingalls’ reputation
As a defense contractor, Ingalls Shipbuilding is accountable to
its customers, the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard, to ensure the U.S.
government is not being overbilled.
Proper time charging is every employee’s responsibility, and
accuracy is a must.
Time and labor charging documents are legal records that Ingalls
uses to bill its customers. Craftsmen and women perform the work
that generates revenue for Ingalls, and the company uses actual hours
from these records to bid on new contracts.
If errors are made, Ingalls could overbid on certain tasks and lose a
contract, or underbid and be unsuccessful as a company. Therefore, the
accuracy of the time recorded for each task performed by each crew on
its daily time log is critical to the future of Ingalls.
The accuracy of time being billed is vital to ensuring Ingalls
Shipbuilding's relationship with its customers.
To ensure accuracy, all employees must adhere to the procedure for
time and labor charging. Part of the procedure involves filling out a
daily time log or DTL.
Each craft employee must initial the DTL at the end of each shift,
verifying that their time has been charged to the correct hull or
contract. If an employee must leave the facility early, he or she must
initial the DTL before departing.
For more information about time and labor charging, refer to
Command Media Document M1002, which describes timekeeping
and shifts for direct hourly employees and indirect employees
on PODC/LC00. Employees may request a copy through their
management.
