Work began this week installing the shafts that will one day
drive the fourth National Security Cutter Hamilton (WMSL 753).
“It takes a lot of coordination between crafts to make
shaft pulling a success,” Barry Crump, Machinery general
superintendent, NSC 4, said.
After outside machinists completed the boring process June 4,
carpenters built a ramp beneath the ship to facilitate shaft pulling.
Hand riggers and machinist use a hydraulic cable to slowly
pull each section of the shaft, three on the port side and three on
the starboard, into the ship to prevent damage to the carefully
machined interior and shafts.
“Our partnership with Rigging is crucial to our success,”
Machinery foreman Chris Howell said. “Rigging foreman
J.D. Hand and his team have done an outstanding job of keeping
everything safe and damage free.”
After each shaft is pulled, it must be coupled with the associated
gears, bearings and other shaft sections.
“Getting these first two shafts coupled takes several days,”
Crump said. “During this time, Paint department is completing
the coating inside the stern tube and Machine Shop personnel are
machining the waterborne bearings.”
The team installing the shafts includes seasoned shipbuilders as
well as newly trained machinists and riggers.
“We have a good group of young guys who are picking up on
things real quick and the older guys are sharing their knowledge
from previous shaft installations,” Howell said.

Back Savers
Ergonomic tables developed
through Process Excellence
The Industrial Products Division (IPD) Shop had a good problem.
“We hired a lot of new personnel in the IPD shop last year,” said Bill
Jones, superintendent, IPD. “By walking the shop floor, we noted that
we didn’t have enough tables for everyone.”
Because more tables were needed, some employees had to bend over
smaller items they were building.
“I’ve found that having the product above your waist keeps you
from hunching,” Jones said. “I didn’t want to risk these guys’ backs, so
I brought the issue up to my craft director at the time, Charlie Crump.
He explained that these were an ergonomic necessity.”
The need for the tables was brought up in a staff meeting and
relayed to Process Excellence.
“We initially secured funds for more ergonomic tables around
Thanksgiving,” said Ken Miller, hull value stream lead, Process
Excellence. “By the end of the year, the IPD shop had built the seven
tables they needed.”
Process Excellence took photos of the tables and sent them to other
shops. Those shop leaders saw a need in their areas, and 32 additional
tables were ordered.
“To save money, we built them using scrap material,” Michael
Hull welder Nicole Henderson uses an ergonomic table to support her
work in the IPD Shop where the table was developed.
Harvell, manufacturing analyst, Hull Process Improvement said.
“Workforce Training manager Carlos McGilvery saw building
them as an opportunity to train welders as well, so it was a win for
everyone.”
And craft personnel using the tables are thankful for the efforts.
“I’m glad that I have something I can work on so I don’t have to bend
over all day,” said Nicole Henderson, hull welder, IPD shop. “It’s nice
to know that our leaders are looking out for us and trying to make our
jobs safer and easier.”
When Disaster Strikes
HII establishes Red Cross disaster microsite
Earlier this month, after tornadoes devastated a town in Oklahoma,
naval architect Mike Toris volunteered with a national organization to
carry supplies up to the stricken area.
“I have a need to help people that I can’t explain,” said Toris.
“It’s just a part of who I am.”
Toris and four others with the national faith based non-profit
Christ in Action carried paper and Styrofoam products along
with $6,500 in monetary donations to the relief site.
Toris, who is also a volunteer firefighter at the Seven Hills Fire
and Rescue in Mobile County, said that he is always looking for
ways to help. In past years, he also helped after tornadoes struck
Leakesville, Miss., and northern Alabama.
A partnership between Huntington Ingalls Industries and the
American Red Cross will make donating or assisting with disasters
simpler for employees.
HII worked with the Red Cross to develop a microsite for employees
to make donations to the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.
The announcement was made in a recent company email blast by
Bill Ermatinger, corporate vice president and chief human resources
officer, HII.
“Rather than respond to each tragedy individually, we have
created a permanent site where you can donate directly to the
American Red Cross—24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365
days a year,” Ermatinger said.

Winner Ethics Poster contestant wins $500
Jennifer Schilling, engineer, displays her winning Ethics Poster. She will receive $500 and her poster
will be used to promote Ethics Awareness. The month-long contest asked shipbuilders to design a
poster illustrating “Proper Time Charging in the Workplace.” The month of June is Ethics Awareness
month, and shipbuilders are reminded that the Ingalls OpenLine (1-877-631-0020) offers a toll-free
number for reporting violations of Huntington Ingalls’ Code of Ethics and Business Conduct.

Moving Forward
Bow section added to John P. Murtha
The 375-ton Grand Block 1371, a large bow section comprised
of eight units, was added to John P. Murtha (LPD 26) June 13.
Led by boat foreman Andrel Johnson, shipbuilders loaded and
secured all equipment into the ship’s laundry room before it
was sealed by the grand block. With 117 of 210 units landed,
Murtha is now more than 50 percent erected.

Challenge rewards shipbuilders who make things safer
One of the ways Ingalls can maintain its competitive edge as the
leader in the shipbuilding Industry is by making every effort to ensure
our fellow shipbuilders are safe.
Operations has devised an awards program supported by
Environmental Health and Safety to recognize employees who go
above and beyond to keep themselves and others safe.
“We are especially seeking input from the hardworking men and
women that physically work on the deck plate every day,” said Tonia
Powell, Operations project manager. “They are on the front line of
shipbuilding, as well as safety, and stand to benefit the most from a
safer working environment.”
The competition, called the “Operations Foremen Safety Challenge,”
will run from June 24 through Aug. 30.
During this period, shipbuilders are encouraged to be proactive in
identifying safety hazards or potential “near-miss” incidents, correct
them if possible, and most importantly document the incident.
If the incident cannot be immediately addressed, shipbuilders are
asked to follow the normal protocol and report the incident to their
foreman and/or an EH&S representative.
In order to compete in the contest, the incident must be documented
using the short 2013 Temporary Safety Hazard/Near Miss Form.
Forms will be available on the Operations homepage on the Intranet.

June 30 – Deadline for Education Assistance applications
Preapproval applications for Ingalls Education Assistance (EA) will be accepted
through June 30. Shipbuilders approved for tuition reimbursement can receive up
to $7,500 per year. Another enrollment period will be offered Nov. 1-30. Signatures
from a manager, director and vice president on a completed Command Media form
SSF H8602 (undergraduate) or SSF H9390 (graduate) are required for preapproval.
Employees who have previously been approved for their current degree program

June 30 – Dependent verification required
Employees with dependents under Huntington Ingalls’ group health plans
will be required to provide documents to verify dependent eligibility by June 30.
Employees should have received a separate mailing that contains material and
instructions on how to provide your verification documentation. If you fail to
submit your verification documentation, your dependent(s) will be dropped from
coverage. Unverified dependents will lose health coverage effective July 1 and

July 4 – Independence Day schedule
Ingalls Shipbuilding facilities in Pascagoula, Gulfport and Avondale will be
closed Thursday, July 4, in observance of Independence Day. Employees will receive
eight hours holiday pay for July 4 only. Regular eight-hour shifts will be worked July
1, 2, 3 and 5. Management will inform employees in their specific area if a different
schedule from the above is to be worked. Represented employees are reminded of
the CBA work requirements for holiday pay eligibility.
July 15 – GED classes starting soon
Earning a General Education Development (GED) diploma can provide
opportunities for Ingalls shipbuilders who did not graduate from high school.
