DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE OF THE HIGH SCHOOL FESTIVAL<br />

The District 2 (Nor<strong>the</strong>ast) High <strong>School</strong> Music Festival is a three day festival which brings<br />

toge<strong>the</strong>r music students from fourteen schools in <strong>the</strong> Nor<strong>the</strong>ast Kingdom. Students audition in <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning of February at North Country Union High <strong>School</strong> in Newport, VT, for places in <strong>the</strong><br />

Festival Band, Chorus or Wind Ensemble. The Festival traditionally takes place on a Thursday,<br />

Friday and Saturday in late March or early April. Students arrive in <strong>the</strong> Thursday morning, and<br />

rehearse throughout <strong>the</strong> day. On Thursday evening <strong>the</strong>re is an ―open mic‖ night where <strong>the</strong> students<br />

perform for each o<strong>the</strong>r in <strong>the</strong> auditorium. Students are housed with local families through <strong>the</strong><br />

efforts of <strong>the</strong> Newport Rotary Club (see P 3)<br />

After all day rehearsals on Friday, <strong>the</strong> Festival Band performs, along with small ensembles<br />

from <strong>the</strong> individual schools. Members of <strong>the</strong> Band will leave for home after <strong>the</strong> concert. On<br />

Saturday morning, <strong>the</strong> Chorus and Wind Ensemble have <strong>the</strong>ir dress rehearsals and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

performance is at 2:00 in <strong>the</strong> afternoon.<br />

Oct. 1<br />

IMPORTANT DATES<br />

Managers will secure a program and confirm program order with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

conductors.<br />

Oct. 15<br />

Managers will contact Festival co-Director (Bill Prue) to order<br />

music and will collect a bio from <strong>the</strong> conductor and submit to Festival<br />

Director (Anne Hamilton).<br />

Jan. 4<br />

Managers will collect a letter (conductor rehearsal notes) from guest<br />

conductor to put in with students’ music folders.<br />

January 11 (Fri.)<br />
