The Fourteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
July 1, 2012
NOTES FROM MONSIGNOR TIM:
WELCOME SUMMER VISITORS: We welcome those who are visiting with us
this summer. We hope your stay in the lakes country is pleasant.
THE SUNDAY MORNING RADIO BROADCAST of the Mass continues to be a
problem because of circumstances beyond our control. Again this last Sunday
the broadcast failed. This past week saw continued efforts to resolve the problems.
Again, I think it should be up and running with the radio broadcast scheduled
for 9:00 A.M. on Radio station KDLM 1340 AM. Thanks for your patience.
PARISH PICTORIAL DIRECTORY: Appointments can be made for pictures for
our upcoming Parish Pictorial Directory. You may make your appointment after
the weekend Masses in the Welcoming Center or by calling the Parish Office
during business hours.
THE PARISH FESTIVAL: For the past two months the Festival committee has
been meeting and planning this year’s Parish Festival. This year is the fortieth
anniversary of the event. The committee has decided to hold the Festival on
Sunday, September 16 right here on parish grounds using our own space. The
time is a bit later than previously held. Times of events would virtually remain the
same with the Mass being held in our church at 10:30 A.M. (at that time we will
have returned to our regular Mass schedule), Be watching the Parish Bulletin for
additional announcements in regard to the Festival. Anyone wishing to volunteer
time and talent to the Festival itself or even to some of these preliminary planning
processes may contact the Parish Office. Thanks for you continued interest
and support of our Parish Festival.
PETER’S PENCE COLLECTION: Next weekend our diocese will take up the
Peter’s Pence Collection, which provides the Holy Father with the funds he
needs to carry out his most important charitable works. The proceeds benefit the
most disadvantaged: victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. Through
your generosity, we can cast the peace of Christ upon the world.
SUMMER PARISH OFFICE HOURS: Beginning this week the Parish Office
hours will be as follows: Monday through Thursday, 8:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. and
Fridays, 8:00 A.M. to 12:00 Noon. These will be in effect through Friday, August 10.
WEDNESDAY IS INDEPENDENCE DAY and the Parish Office will be closed for
the observance. Mass will be celebrated that day at 9:00 A.M. in the church.
NEW ALTAR CLOTH AND WALL HANGINGS: A new altar cloth and wall
hangings have been placed in our church in recent days. We are grateful to
Loretta Walz and family for their memorial in memory of Loretta's husband
JAMES WALZ, who passed away last winter and for offerings made to the parish
for environment purposes. These new additions reflect our Ordinary Time color
theme.
I will be out of the parish these next two weeks spending some time with
family to enjoy some of these summer days. Please consult the Parish
Bulletin for the times of scheduled weekday Masses. I will return July 14.

Pastoral Associate “Sharings” - by Sister Kathleen McGeary Youth Ministry News -by Brady Borslien
Infant Baptism Preparation…Next session is scheduled
for Thursday, July 5 from 7:00 – 8:15 p.m. in the
Holy Family Room. If you are planning to present
your baby for Baptism, please contact the Parish Office
(847-1393) before July 5. Whenever possible, try to
have both parents attend the preparation session.
Hearing Difficulties?... If you experience hearing
difficulties in church, check out the „Personal PA
Receivers‟ located in a box on the counter in the
sacristy before each of the weekend Masses. Just pick
up a receiver before Mass and return it to the box after
Mass. Try it, you might like it!
Thought for the Week… Work is the gift we give to
the world. That‟s why it‟s so important that what we
do for a living has value, not simply for ourselves but
for the world at-large. It may take a while to discover
our God-given gifts but its real purpose is worth it.
Work which is more about putting in time or storing up
wealth has the tone of being “a job”, whereas, work
with the intent of making the world a better place radiates
the attitude of “service”. Thomas Carlyle once
wrote, “The work an unknown good person has done is
like a vein of water flowing hidden underground,
secretly making the ground green.”
Holy Rosary School News
Help Wanted
Holy Rosary Catholic School is seeking a Head Cook
to lead the food service program during the school
year. Duties and responsibilities include menu planning,
ordering groceries and supplies, meal preparation
and serving and collaborating with several parish
user groups. The position is seven hours per day and
includes benefits. To apply, please submit letter of
application and resume to: Mike Connell, Principal,
Holy Rosary Catholic School, 1043 Lake Avenue,
Detroit Lakes, MN 56501
Let me tell you about an event of my own personal
life which happened many years ago. One day I was
with a friend of mine, a man with a good heart but who
did not have faith. Pointing toward a globe he said,
"look, from North to South, from East to West." "What
do you want me to look at?" I asked. His answer was:
"The failure of Christ.
For twenty centuries people have been trying to
bring his doctrine to men's lives, and look at the result."
I was filled with sadness. It is painful to think that
many people still don't know our Lord, and that among
those who do know him, many live as though they did
not. But the feeling lasted only a moment. It was
shortly overcome by love and thankfulness, because
Jesus has wanted every man to cooperate freely in the
work of redemption. He has not failed. His doctrine
and life are effective in the world at all times. The redemption
carried out by him is sufficient, and more
than sufficient.
God does not want slaves, but children. He respects
our freedom. The work of salvation is still going on,
and each on of us has a part in it. It is Christ's will,
Saint Paul tells us in impressive words, that we should
fulfill in our flesh, in our life, what is lacking in his
Passion, "for the good of his body, which is the
church."
It is worthwhile putting our lives in the line, giving
ourselves completely, so as to answer to the love and
the confidence that God as placed in us. It is worthwhile,
above all, to decide to take our Christian life
seriously. - St. Josemaria Escriva
The Journey
By Deacon Gary Hager
Thanks to God and thank you to all that supported the journey of 50 campers of local youth
and adult chaperones, half from Holy Rosary, to Lancaster, PA for Catholic Heart Workcamp
(CHWC) held at Lancaster Catholic High School. The heading for this article seems
appropriate, for nearly everyone attending the camp and the Lancaster residents.
The journey brought 180 campers together from Minnesota, Virginia, Maine, New Hampshire and other New
England states for the next chapter in our journeys. Each parish attending the camp is spread among 24 work
teams. Team 14 consisted of Kaitlyn Kennedy, Detroit Lakes; Lindsey¸ Maine; Molly, Alex, Will and Grace,
Virginia; plus adult chaperones, Ingrid, Virginia and myself, Gary Hager, DL.
We entered a journey with the Cherry Street Guest Home in Columbia, PA, a Personal Care Facility with 30 residents;
some residents have lived at the facility for 20 years. Also the home has a staff of nine, and the facility
owner, Roxanne. The home is approximately 125 years old, with seven bathrooms and 17 bedrooms, plus a small
commercial kitchen, dining room, sitting room and a wonderful open air porch common for the era.
Roxanne, the facility owner for the past 12 years, manages the home 24-7, living about 30 yards from the home in
a small rental apartment. Roxanne stated, she loves the residents and the staff. Her budget is limited to the social
security checks each resident receives to pay the staff, meals, mortgage, insurance, taxes, utilities, repairs and resident‟s
medical bills with hopes to have $1,000 remaining at the end of the month. Last winter, when each of the
three furnaces broke down, the repair costs exceeded funds, yet Roxanne trusts in God to see her through day to
day. When we prepared to depart on the final work day, our work team, the residents, staff and Roxanne gathered
in a large circle for prayer, after the prayer the residents stated how much they love Roxanne for heading up the
“family” at Cherry Street Guest Home. Roxanne is Christ to the residents and staff. Each day consists of long
hours, little rest and sharing much of herself, a widow, with grown children. Ironically our work team hoped to be
Christ to the residents; rather we were there to support Roxanne on her journey.
The work team completed four – six hour days to improve landscaping around the home by weeding, planting
petunias and, impatiens, adding 14 bags of mulch, watering flowers, removing English Ivy, an invasive weed,
washing and painting the open air porch, painting four bathrooms, washed down bedroom doors, cleaned the six
burner commercial gas stove, refrigerator, washed the kitchen floor and most wonderfully spent time with the
residents in the sitting room and playing board games.
Some residents shared their journey with us including raised in orphanages as children, no family. Other residents
experience either physical or mental challenges where they cannot live on their own, one man deaf and does not
speak, plus military veterans. Each resident is friendly with a special smile for the work team but even a greater
smile for Roxanne.
After each work day, all work teams returned to Lancaster Catholic High School to get cleaned up, a meal and
then participate in the evening program. Each night we
were asked, “How did you see God during the work
day?” To conclude this letter, I saw God in Roxanne,
consider reading Matthew Chapter 5:2-12 to better understand.
Roxanne is living the mission that Jesus sent us on
to live. Roxanne does what she does since she knows that
these residents have nowhere to go. Roxanne's witness is
how I saw God throughout this journey. I thank God and
thank you for supporting us on this journey to meet Roxanne,
the residents and staff at Cherry Street Guest Home.
Marriage…
Unique For a Reason:
Why Marriage Matters
The Basis of Civilization
By Dale Ahlquist
“Ideals,” says G.K. Chesterton, “are the most practical things in the world.” This is why we still defend
the family. This is why we insist on the ideal of marriage as a permanent union between one man and
one woman, which creates the only proper setting for bringing new souls into the world, and that this
purely natural act should not be interfered with.
The social trends have steadily moved in the opposite direction from this ideal in the last century. It is
no longer a matter of a few loud critics getting a little testy at our quaint ideas of morality; we have
gone past being attacked to being brazenly ignored. But if the society at large does not understand
the moral arguments for the family, perhaps it will gain some appreciation for the practical
arguments.
An economy based on the family is self-sustaining. Its focus is on the nurturing and training of children
and not on the mere acquisition of goods. The family ideal as defended by Chesterton is something
quite different than the industrialized consumer family, where the family members leave the house
each morning by the clock and on a strict schedule to pursue work and recreation and the majority of
life outside the home. Chesterton’s ideal was the productive home with its creative kitchen, its busy
workshop, its fruitful garden, and its central role in entertainment, education, and livelihood. Unlike
the industrial home, life in a productive household is not amenable to scheduling and anything but
predictable.
Young Adults...If you are out of a high school and
you attend Holy Rosary, you may to register as an
individual family.
The only thing surprising about this ideal is that it was once shared by almost everyone. Children used
to be considered an asset; at some point they began to be seen as a liability. Chesterton says that
every high civilization decays by forgetting obvious things. The obvious things are the ordinary things,
and we have forgotten them. The modern world that we have created has brought with it great strain
and stress so that even the things that normal men have normally desired are no longer desirable:
“marriage and fair ownership and worship and the mysterious worth of man.” Those are the normal
and ordinary things. Those are the things we have lost, and we need to recover them.
“The disintegration of rational society,” says Chesterton, “started in the drift from the hearth and the
family; the solution must be a drift back.”
