Blessing of the pets on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at Holy Rosary School. Mass was held in the parking

and Winifred Stary Scholarship
winners. The scholarship amounts
range from $1,000 to $5,000.
Students are eligible for this
scholarship two consecutive years
if they meet the guidelines.
To apply for this scholarship, applicants
must have been a Holy
Rosary student who has completed
at least three years. Future
applicants must have graduated
from eighth grade at Holy Rosary
School, maintained at least a B
average in high school and be
pursuing a technical, science or
medical degree or certificate. However,
other careers may be taken
into consideration. Applications are
available beginning January 2011.
Candidates are encouraged to
apply while in their senior year of
high school, though later applications
will be honored.

THE CATHOLIC AID ASSOCIATION:
In May 2010, Mike Bredeck, regional manager
of the Catholic Aid Association presented
Holy Rosary School with the third and final
check for $5,000. This is the third installment
of a $15,000 donation for the remodeling and
restoration of the school. Catholic Aid’s vision
statement reflects the tone of this great organization:
to extend the Roman Catholic Faith by
supporting Catholic organizations that do.
These include Catholic missions, schools, parishes,
and pro-life efforts, to name a few.
Founded in 1878, Catholic Aid is celebrating
it’s 132nd year. It has a long history of providing
a complete line of life insurance and annuity
products to members and enjoys being a
stable and strong association with nearly 75,000
members in the Upper Midwest.
This is the second year that CAA was rechartered
at Holy Rosary Catholic Community. Join
your fellow Catholics in 2010 during the fall
Membership Drive—purchase life insurance or
annuities to become a part of something more.

KEEPING IN TOUCH WITH OUR ALUMNI
Kathryn Knuttila Crowned
Miss Minnesota 2010
Kathryn Knuttila, 23, of Detroit Lakes
was crowned Miss Minnesota 2010 during
the final night of competition for the Miss
Minnesota Scholarship Program.
She was also the recipient of the Tracy
Joy McBride Quality of Life Award.
Competition was held at the Eden Prairie
Performing Arts Center.
Her older sister, Kari Knuttila Heisler,
was also Miss Minnesota 2001. As Miss
Minnesota, Knuttila will receive more
than $20,000 in scholarship money and
awards. She will participate in the Miss
America competition in January 2011.
Knuttila is a student at McNally Smith
College of Music in St. Paul. Both
Knuttilas graduated from Detroit Lakes
High School and are alumna of Holy
Rosary Catholic School grades K—8,
along with their oldest sister, Kimberly.

We had a fun time reminiscing as some of the students from the HRS class of
1994 were home for their 10th class reunion from DLHS. We had breakfast and
toured the school. We missed the other 19 classmates from Holy Rosary.

� Kari Carr Tschider (Tom) has her daughter, Lauren in 5th grade. Her
two older daughters, Matalyn and Taylor also went to HRS. They are
now in the DLHS.
� Mark Fritz (Cindy) has had four children at HRS; Jacob, Greta, Carly,
5th grade, and Tommy in 2nd grade.
� Lisa LaVoi has her daughter, Isabella, in Kindergarten.
� Grandpa Glenn Disse (Debbie), father of Abby Pettit (Troy), has his
granddaughter, Ryhen, in preschool class.
� Anne Schiller Riddle (Brian), has Ethan in 2nd grade and Sarah in
Kindergarten.
� Alan Bellefeuille (Tricia) has Maci in 2nd grade and Carter in Kindergarten.
� Alicia Foltz Bowers (Nick) has Madison in 2nd grade and Ella in Kindergarten.
� Amy Tietz Coley (Jason) has Emma in 1st grade.
� Jessica Lill has Emily in 1st grade.
� Heather Ware Nelson (Jim) has Cassidy in 4th, Greta in 3rd and
Sophia in 1st grade.
� Lisa Summers Jasken has Marcus in 6th and Abby in 2nd grade. Tess,
Taylor and Jena also graduated from 8th grade at HRS.
� Yvette Houglum Young has Catherine Henderson in 2nd grade, older
siblings, Mitchell and Cassie also attended.
� Did you know that Matt Brenk, graduate of HRS through 8th
grade, is the Detroit Lakes Mayor?
� Kally Wolf, the daughter of Lynn Wolf, 5th grade teacher, is our
interim preschool teacher. Kally also attended Holy Rosary
School, K– 8.

PTO gives $7000 to the School

Catholic Aid (from the pie sales) was given to the school.

What Planned Giving Means
Planned giving is a way to make a charitable gift
that will benefit you and your charity. There are a
number of opportunities to chose from in your
planned gift giving.
The main purpose of a planned gift is to help the
charity of your choice and a way to make a charitable
gift that will also help you. There are certain
plans that can help you enjoy personal financial
growth or benefit your family.
A planned gift is different than an outright gift. An
outright gift is received right away by the charitable
organization and results in a tax deduction for
you when you itemize your taxes. A planned gift
is one that is received by the organization sometime
in the future. The tax benefit to you depends
on what type of gift and the assets used to fund it.
Planned Giving Opportunities
The following are planned giving opportunities
that are available and in place at Holy Rosary at
this time. If you have some other ideas, please
feel free to stop in and discuss them.
Endowments
A gift to an endowment fund is a gift that keeps
on giving. The money put into an endowment is
invested and the interest from that investment is
used in the charity’s annual budget or spent according
to the intention of the donor of the original
gift. The principal amount remains untouched.
Endowments may be set up in memory or in
honor of a loved one, a family endowment, or a
special ministry endowment.
We currently have a Parish Endowment and a
School Endowment. Interest from these endowments
are used in the annual budget for parish
and school.
Scholarship Endowments help us to provide
a Catholic Education to students in need.
The amount of scholarship dollars is determined
by the interest earned on the gift that was made
by the donor.
Percy & Winifred Stary Family Scholarship
This college scholarship was established for students
who attended 3+ years and graduated
from Holy Rosary School.
Eunice Matter Fernholz Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2001 in memory
of Eunice who had been a teacher at Holy Rosary for
many years.
James & Mary B. Kappel Scholarship
This scholarship program was established in 1999.
James Kappel was a 1940 graduate of Holy Rosary
School.
Joseph & Virginia Howell Scholarship
This scholarship program was established in 1997.
Joe & Virginia were longtime members of Holy Rosary
Parish.
Lawrence Bergen Family Library Endowment
This endowment was established in the mid 80’s and
is used to update the books in our library.
Adolph Larsen Family Scholarship
This scholarship was established in 2004. Adolph
was a graduate of Holy Rosary School.
Beth Triggs Library Endowment
This endowment was established in 2003 and is
used to purchase books for new preschool and kindergarten
students. They receive these books as a
gift after they are read to during round-up.
