School News from
Mrs. Larson,
Teacher
It’s been another great year
so far at Holy Rosary School
with lots of excitement and
learning going on throughout the building. We
have been blessed with 124 students in grades
preschool – 8 th grade, and have welcomed 9 new
families to our school in grades K-8.
The first day of school this year was on
Tuesday, September 4 th . Students spent their
day getting to know their classmates, new
teacher, and the classroom expectations. The
middle school students spent the afternoon enjoying
a round of mini golf at Rockin’ Waters
Golf Course and made a stop at the Dairy
Queen on their way back to school.
One of our greatest and most treasured
events happened on Wednesday, September
26 th when we celebrated Grandparent’s Day
here at school. Prior to the event, invitations
were sent home with students to share with
their grandparents. Approximately 90 grandparents
and all of our students gathered in the
church for a short program filled with songs to
celebrate our grandparents. This was followed
by several activities in St. John’s Hall that allowed
students and grandparents to interact
and enjoy each other’s company. Some of the
stations included “FAITH” Bingo, photos with
grandparents, decorating and then eating your
own cupcake, making bookmarks, putting a
sugar cookie recipe mix in a bag, remembering
nursery rhymes and coloring. It was a wonderful
afternoon and fun for everyone!
On Friday, September 28 th , the middle
school took their annual fall charter bus trip to
the Renaissance Festival in Shakopee, MN.
Throughout the year, the group raises money
through their school store to help pay for the
trip. At the festival, students enjoyed many activities
such as: glass blowing, print making,
candle making, face painting, musical instruments,
pottery, and sculptures. Other educational
events and entertainment included: Renaissance
History, Live Action Jousting, Courtly
Dance Lessons, Juggling School, and Renaissance
games. It was a beautiful day and a good
time was had by all! After the trip, all of the
middle school students participated in a creative
writing contest, sponsored by the Renaissance
Festival, and wrote stories and poems
with the theme of The Knight Who Wouldn’t
Fight.
On Wednesday, October 3 rd , the middle
school participated in the annual Envirothon
held at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center
in Fergus Falls. They entered three teams this
year, and one of those teams (Emma Clark,
Akyra Hagen, Clara Livermore, Katriana
Mehlhaff, & Anna Schumacher) took home the
3 rd place trophy! It was a tight competition
considering the top 3 places were within 4
points of one another. To celebrate the big
win, the whole middle school group stopped in
Pelican Rapids on the way home for a Dairy
Queen treat.
On Thursday, October 4 th , the Feast of
St. Francis was celebrated at Mass with a special
pet blessing. Many different pets, such
as: fish, dogs, cats, bunnies, hamsters, and
even a chicken, joined our students at Mass
that day. Many of the pets joined in with the
responses and singing the songs!
Fall brings the opportunity for an exciting
and fulfilling experience in 3 rd grade reading.
It was in October that they began their
monthly visits to our neighbor next door, Oak
Crossing (former St. Mary’s Nursing Home).
The 3 rd graders walk over with a specially chosen
book from our library that each child believes
will be fun and entertaining to read to a
new-found friend from the center. These visits
give the children a wonderful opportunity to
live Jesus’s desire for us to love our neighbors.
Fourth graders are also excited about
reading as the new school year starts and they
began using the Accelerated Reader program
in which they take their tests for comprehension
online. Matthew Tobkin had the high
score for reading and testing in both fiction
and non-fiction. He scored 36.1 points in October.
Matthew is now in the “25 Point Club”!
Congratulations Matthew!
Our middle schoolers have also been
busy in the classroom. Some of the science
activities they did this month included: studying
weather and climate and then acting as
meteorologists by collecting data about the
daily weather and presenting their results to
the class; studying matter and having fun using
dry ice to create ice bubbles; learning
about density and making Fizzy Fountains;
and on Halloween day, using pumpkins in
2

Continued from page 2.
math class to estimate weight, height, circumference,
and diameter. They also have been working
in FACS class to sew a pouch for their e-readers,
iPods, etc. and have been learning about using
debit and credit cards, balancing a checkbook,
and tipping. The month of October was concluded
by carving pumpkins for the altar at the
Pumpkin Liturgy and going to an educational
corn maze near Park Rapids. The theme for the
corn maze and the activities there were based on
our 1 st president, George Washington.
Finally, we would like to conclude by
thanking everyone who helped us top our goal for
the marathon by helping us raise $25,606 for Holy
Rosary School! Four of our students, Kobe
Braukmann, Katrianna Mehlhaff, Grace
Jaroszewski, and Madison Bowers, earned over
$1,000 and made the “$1,000 Club”. Thank you
everyone for your commitment and dedication to
our school – it is a true blessing!
A message from
Terri Paskey
The theme for Catholic
Schools Week 2013 is “Catholic
Schools Raise the Standards”.
The annual observance starts
the last Sunday in January and runs all week,
which in 2013 is January 27th through February
2nd. Schools typically celebrate Catholic
Schools Week with masses, open houses, and
activities for students, families, parishioners
and the community at large.
As parents, grandparents, alumni, parents
of alumni, and friends of Holy Rosary School,
we realize the importance of a strong academic
education immersed in our faith and values.
Holy Rosary School is dedicated to continuing
this service for our students.
Thank you for your
continued financial support
and prayers. These
Veteran’s Day Program
On Friday, November 9 th , Holy Rosary School
hosted a Veterans Day Program to honor the
brave men and women, past and present, who
serve our country to preserve and protect the
freedoms and liberties of all Americans. Following
the Presentation of the Colors by the University
of North Dakota ROTC, students in grades
pre-school through eight listened intently as veterans
representing the Coast Guard, National
Guard, Army, Navy and Air Force, shared their
experiences and urged students to never forget
the sacrifices made by members of the United
States Military. One speaker, George Peters, a
former member of the Army’s elite Green Beret
Unit, is a multiple Purple Heart recipient. The
ROTC Cadets fielded questions from the students
about the ROTC Program. Finally, Holy
Rosary School gave special recognition to school
custodian, Larry Vange, a veteran of the US
Navy. Larry was presented with a picture of
the USS Saratoga, the Air Craft Carrier he
served on in 1977 and 1978. The picture was
signed by all of the students of Holy Rosary
School. The program was organized by Donna
Kennedy who devoted many hours of planning
and organizing to make the event a success.
God has
ENDOWED us
with the Gifts
of Life and
Salvation.
One of the
ways we can
express our
gratitude is by
ENDOWING
the
future of our
Parish and
School!
W hat is a endowment? An endowment is a gift of cash, investment securities, life
insurance, real estate, personal property, charitable trusts, bequests (gifts by terms of a will),
or anything of value that can be sold and the proceeds reinvested. An endowment can memorialize
an individual or family or the giver can remain anonymous. Funds are conservatively
invested to generate current income. The principal amount is never spent and continually
provides annual income to support your charity. Think about Holy Rosary School for your
8 th Grade Opinions about Attending a Catholic School
Emma Clark:
Going to a Catholic school is a lot better than a public school, I think. One of the awesome aspects is less kids in a class
and more one-on-one time with the teachers. I’m also a lot closer to the kids in my class and in the younger grades because
of the small class sizes. I’m glad I’ve gone to a private school for my first 8 years of schooling. I have had a better
education because my teachers and school work challenge me. I love Catholic schools!
Clara Livermore:
Going to a small Catholic middle school is great because you get more attention when you have trouble with your work.
You also grow close not only with the other students, but also with the teachers.
Katriana Mehlhaff:
Being at Holy Rosary School since I was in Preschool has really taught me a lot about my faith and who I am. Being in a
private school with small classes and wonderful teachers, who are able to spend more one-on-one time with me, has taught
me many good lessons and increased my faith and beliefs. Being at Holy Rosary really prepares you for your future in
education and for life in general. I really love Holy Rosary and never wish to leave, but I know that I will have to soon.
Anna Schumacher:
Attending a Catholic middle school has been quite an experience. We have learned things that no public school could
teach: humility, hard work, self-control, and to love our neighbors. I am very glad to go to Holy Rosary!
Akyra Hagen:
My opinion on Catholic schools is that they are great! I love that my parents sent me to Holy Rosary! Because of our
small class sizes, I am able to have more one-on-one time with the teachers. I also love all the fun field trips we get to take
at the middle school here. I will truly miss going to Holy Rosary and will take with me all the life lessons that I have
learned.
Sam Nelmark:
What I like about going to Holy Rosary is the free days we earn from fundraising and the field trips we take in the middle
school. I think it’s really cool that the teachers take out that much time for things like that. I also like the one-to-one time
we get with the teachers and how they all know our names and care about us.
Natalie Steffl:
I think Holy Rosary is a good Catholic school to go to. I enjoy seeing my friends, teachers, and other students each day
that I go to school. I’m glad that I have Religion as a subject, Mass every Wednesday, have Morning Prayer every day,
and have the opportunity to learn about God and Jesus. I’m glad and proud to be a student at Holy Rosary!
New school and church sign on
Washington Avenue
Have you seen it? We finally have our new
sign! On September 11th, our new electronic
sign was installed on top of a beautiful brick
structure, which was donated by Winter Masonry.
It is located in front of the school on
Washington Avenue.
Almost three years ago, the school advisory
council came to a consensus that we could
utilize a sign to help market our school and to
help make the community aware of our presence.
Plus, it let’s everyone know of events or
changes which take place at the school and
parish.
With the help of the Knights of Columbus,
Spring Interlude, and PTO, we were able to
raise the needed funds, which totaled over
$26,000. We also received generous donations
from David and Gina Steffl, Frank and Barb
Foltz, the late Jim Walz, alumni, Margaret
Hemauer, Juanita Carlisle, and others.
This structure will be a life-long school/
parish landmark and we thank and bless everyone
who has made it a reality!
A Ground Water
Guardian
Community
Holy Rosary School has been designated
a Ground Water Guardian
Community by the Ground Water
Guardian Foundation. This title has been awarded due
to the successful participation in the Water Festival.
For over twelve years the 4th grade students have
teamed up with professional mentors from the community
to research specific topics concerned with the protection
of ground water and the environment. The students
A Message From Carol Foltz, former Holy Rosary Teacher
My name is Carol Foltz and I am a member of the Holy Rosary School Board and the Public Relations
Committee. Holy Rosary School used to be my home away from home for nineteen years
while I taught here. This is my second year of retirement. My children attended Holy Rosary and
now my grandchildren are here. Having spent so much time here, I know first hand what a gift our
school is to this community.
I would like to say how much I believe in the impact that Holy Rosary has on the formation of its
students. Many times I have witnessed the transformation of students into confident, well-rounded individuals. Holy
Rosary is a package, if you will, from Preschool thru grade 8, each year building on the next with the teachers working
together to help each child reach their full potential. As they graduate 8th grade they are fully prepared for high school.
The stats continue to show the academic success and involvement in activities and leadership roles our former students
take on. Part of the mission of the church is that of Catholic education. The Lord sacrificed everything for his people.
Might we sacrifice something for our children to give them a great start to their lives in faith and education? They are
the future, our best investment, why not give them a piece of the rock?
Family is the first school of life and Holy Rosary school is here to help with spiritual parenting. I leave you with these
words from scripture on hard work and diligence from Corinthians 3:10-11:
“But each one should be careful how he builds. For no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid,
which is Jesus Christ”.
Don’t just send your kids to school, send them to Holy Rosary Catholic School, where faith & education meet. Thank
you and God Bless...
Emily Lill takes 1st Place!
PROUD OF OUR STUDENTS!
Four students participated in
Regional Honor Band last spring.
Fund Raiser for iPads!
In an effort to expand technology opportunities for
the students of Holy Rosary School, we partnered with
Dr. Jeffrey Harvey, DDS, to raise funds for iPads for
our school. Early research in the use of this cutting edge
technology in the classroom indicates students are more
actively engaged in the curriculum.
Dr. Harvey made available three orthodontic treatments
(braces) to be bid on through a silent auction. The
opening (minimum) bid was $4,000. Each treatment is
valued from $6-8,000. Upon the closing of the auction
and the purchase of the treatments by the winning bidders,
Dr. Harvey will donate the amount of the bids to
Holy Rosary School to purchase iPads. Three treatments
will generate enough funds to purchase 33 iPads.
Three lucky Holy Rosary families won/bought the
treatments with their lucky bidding which totaled $12,
300. When payments are received, Holy Rosary will
soon relish the reward of our new iPads!
THANK YOU
Drs. Jeffrey Harvey & Ames
for your generosity and dedication to our school!
