WELCOME<br />
FROM<br />
CAROL<br />
COFFEY<br />
7 Welcome to the <strong>IDI</strong> awards 2010/<strong>2011</strong> – The Best<br />
<strong>of</strong> Irish Design <strong>Handbook</strong> that looks back at some<br />
<strong>of</strong> the best design work created and presented by<br />
members <strong>of</strong> The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Designers</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />
This book allows us to showcase members work<br />
from across the spectrum <strong>of</strong> design discipl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
which the <strong>in</strong>stitute represents. We also <strong>in</strong>clude<br />
the Graduate Design awards which has seen an<br />
impressive standard <strong>of</strong> work <strong>in</strong> recent years. This<br />
year’s commendations would <strong>in</strong>dicate a healthy<br />
and promis<strong>in</strong>g future for the design <strong>in</strong>dustry and<br />
future award entries.<br />
<strong>of</strong> the designers calendar and this handbook is a<br />
document <strong>of</strong> that award w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g design. The book<br />
is a glorious display <strong>of</strong> the achievements <strong>of</strong> our<br />
design community. The talent skill and experience<br />
that goes <strong>in</strong>to produc<strong>in</strong>g award w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g work<br />
is captured <strong>in</strong> these w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g entries and an<br />
<strong>in</strong>ternational jury has deemed them to be w<strong>in</strong>ners<br />
<strong>of</strong> an <strong>in</strong>ternational standard.<br />
So on behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IDI</strong> Council, Officers and<br />
Presidents past and present I would like to extend<br />
my congratulations to all the supporters, members,<br />
entrants, participants and w<strong>in</strong>ners <strong>of</strong> the <strong>2011</strong><br />
8<br />
<strong>2011</strong> was another tough year for many with more<br />
job losses and cutbacks on budgets and the <strong>IDI</strong><br />
itself was not immune to the downturn. We had<br />
to move premises and cut back on adm<strong>in</strong>istration.<br />
But some changes were <strong>of</strong> benefit to our members<br />
<strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g upgrades on our onl<strong>in</strong>e service <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g<br />
onl<strong>in</strong>e awards entry and onl<strong>in</strong>e membership.<br />
awards. The awards wouldn’t happen without the<br />
awards committee so a big thanks you to all who<br />
gave <strong>of</strong> their time and enthusiasm. The design and<br />
preparation <strong>of</strong> this book wouldn’t happen without<br />
the brilliance <strong>of</strong> Tara Clarke and her design team at<br />
Z<strong>in</strong>c so a big thank you to them also.<br />
Despite the difficult trad<strong>in</strong>g conditions and<br />
cont<strong>in</strong>ued woes <strong>of</strong> the Irish economy it has been<br />
hearten<strong>in</strong>g to see that the design community has<br />
a fight<strong>in</strong>g spirit. There has been a show <strong>of</strong> strength<br />
and defiance <strong>in</strong> the face <strong>of</strong> adversity and the<br />
design community seems to have harnessed it’s<br />
greatest strengths as a pr<strong>of</strong>essional community to<br />
prevail and achieve some great design solutions<br />
without any reduction <strong>in</strong> quality. There has been<br />
tremendous co-operation between the discipl<strong>in</strong>es<br />
and some <strong>of</strong> the <strong>in</strong>itiatives around budgets, space<br />
and accommodation have been <strong>in</strong>genious.<br />
I am look<strong>in</strong>g forward to 2012 <strong>in</strong> the hope that<br />
there will be further seeds and green shoots<br />
<strong>in</strong>dicat<strong>in</strong>g a brighter future for designers <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong>.<br />
Hopefully we will see the creativity that is captured<br />
<strong>in</strong> this book nurtured and developed so that we<br />
can look forward to another year <strong>of</strong> excellence <strong>in</strong><br />
design <strong>in</strong> 2012.<br />

THE<br />
JURY<br />
11 The <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Designers</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong> <strong>Awards</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>2011</strong> attracted a considerable number <strong>of</strong> entries<br />
consider<strong>in</strong>g the economic climate <strong>of</strong> the past few<br />
years. We had a wide range <strong>of</strong> entries across all<br />
16 categories from designers across the island <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Ireland</strong>. Once aga<strong>in</strong> the competition was judged<br />
onl<strong>in</strong>e by an <strong>in</strong>ternational jury.<br />
The judg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> this competition is a service which<br />
the Jury provides for the Irish design pr<strong>of</strong>ession<br />
on a voluntary basis, provid<strong>in</strong>g an important<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional support for a Design <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />
another jurisdiction.<br />
The Chairman has no role <strong>in</strong> the mark<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> the<br />
competition. My role is entirely adm<strong>in</strong>istrative<br />
The judg<strong>in</strong>g methodology employed was for<br />
each judge to give marks on a standardised basis<br />
to enable, with<strong>in</strong> their <strong>in</strong>dividual categories, to<br />
produce an overall w<strong>in</strong>ner. The category w<strong>in</strong>ners,<br />
once established, were then sent to each judge<br />
to select a Grand Prix W<strong>in</strong>ner <strong>of</strong> the overall<br />
competition. This competition is unique <strong>in</strong> that the<br />
Jury is entirely made up <strong>of</strong> design pr<strong>of</strong>essionals<br />
from overseas who do not practice <strong>in</strong> <strong>Ireland</strong>. The<br />
object <strong>of</strong> the exercise is to benchmark Irish design<br />
aga<strong>in</strong>st the best overseas. I am happy to report<br />
that the International Jury once aga<strong>in</strong> made an<br />
award <strong>in</strong> almost all <strong>of</strong> the categories.<br />
and to ensure fairness and compliance with<strong>in</strong> the<br />
judg<strong>in</strong>g methodology.<br />
I would like to take this opportunity on behalf <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>IDI</strong> to thank the International Jury for their time<br />
and expertise <strong>in</strong> judg<strong>in</strong>g the <strong>2011</strong> Irish Design<br />
<strong>Awards</strong>,The Best <strong>of</strong> Irish Design.<br />
Steve Conlon<br />
Chairman <strong>of</strong> the International Jury <strong>2011</strong><br />
12<br />
The Jury members gave up a considerable amount<br />
<strong>of</strong> their personal time <strong>in</strong> judg<strong>in</strong>g this competition<br />
and I would, on behalf <strong>of</strong> the <strong>IDI</strong>, record our<br />
thanks and appreciation <strong>of</strong> their expertise and<br />
patience. It is not an easy task and requires a<br />
degree <strong>of</strong> concentration and determ<strong>in</strong>ation to<br />
decide who the category w<strong>in</strong>ners are, who is to<br />
be highly commended and who is to be awarded<br />
a commendation. Hav<strong>in</strong>g spent time determ<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
the category w<strong>in</strong>ners the Jury then have to go<br />
through the whole system aga<strong>in</strong> to decide on the<br />
overall Grand Prix W<strong>in</strong>ner.
