appropriate development in the region. Many
of these people were invited to come to the
Roundtable to take part or give presentations.
The involvement of key government agencies
was seen to be important. Representatives
from regional offices of the Department
of Conservation and Land Management,
Department of Indigenous Affairs and
Department of Agriculture, as well as the
Kimberley Development Commission and
Kimberley College of TAFE, were invited
to the Roundtable. The Premier of Western
Australia, and the State Ministers for Regional
Development and Conservation were also
invited.
Other people from outside the region who could
make a useful contribution were invited to join in
and present papers. These included researchers
and scientists with experience in areas like
economic development, governance structures,
the natural ecology, and wetland research.
A number of representatives from environmental
groups and funding bodies were also invited
to come to the Roundtable and to contribute
papers to the final report.
Three speakers from overseas were asked to
speak about appropriate development ideas and
opportunities in other parts of the world.
OBJECTIVES
OF THE ROUNDTABLE
The purpose of the Roundtable was to develop
a picture for ecologically, culturally, socially
and economically sustainable development for
the Fitzroy and Canning basins and the wider
Kimberley region. This picture would be based
on the vision and values of the region’s people.
Other objectives were:
• to re-affirm the values and vision of the
people of the region
• to provide opportunities for networking
and information-sharing between people
involved in a range of sustainable enterprises
in the Kimberley
• to explore options and opportunities for
appropriate development in the Kimberley
• to showcase examples of sustainable
enterprises and initiatives in the Kimberley
and elsewhere.
