graduates who will have a big part to play in shaping our business over the months and years to
come. Because whether you join us in Hong Kong or Singapore, Mumbai or Sydney, you’ll be the
your contribution will be recognized like never before.
Perform well and you’ll be noticed. And the more you’re
noticed, the more you’ll be rewarded –
with greater challenges and bigger responsibilities.
An underlying ethos we all share
Our principles
Building Tomorrow has four principles at its heart – Relationships, Relevance,
Responsibility and Results. These enable us to test our actions and priorities against
our commitment to build lasting relationships with our clients, to provide relevant
support, to act responsibly and to remain results focused in all that we do.
Relationships
We are a relationship-led bank. We strive to build valued and valuable relationships,
recognizing that the depth of our client relationships is key to delivering successful
and repeatable outcomes. Internally, connectivity across the Bank continues to be
essential to our success. Good relationships create
an enduring advantage and underpin the value of our franchise.
Relevance
To create competitive advantage for our clients, we have to be at the forefront
of innovation and creativity. Remaining relevant in all aspects of our business is
critical to our ongoing success. Our drive for innovation, creativity and thought
leadership is reflected in our brand and in the delivery of our client experience.
Responsibility
We balance our drive for results with the need for strong risk management.
We believe in doing what is right and fair. Our people are empowered to
take responsibility for their actions, guided by strong business principles.
We seek to enrich the lives of our employees and those in the communities
in which we operate, giving consideration to our impact on society,
and spreading more widely the benefits of our success. Each of us needs
to take responsibility for the success of our business and how it operates.
WHY IT’S
RIGHT FOR ME
“This is a bank that really
cares about the people it’s
hiring, their personalities
and level of intelligence.”
GBM Markets – Sales.
Results
We are committed to achieving enhanced performance. For our clients,
this means helping them achieve their goals. For our shareholders it’s about
achieving sustainable and acceptable risk-adjusted returns. We do not just define
results in financial terms, but also in the quality of the relationships we build with
clients and each other, the environment we create for our people to grow in, and the
prosperity we create for the communities in which we operate.
What attracted you to working for RBS?
People. My main motivation to work for RBS is the
camaraderie present amongst employees. I have heard
from insiders and had firsthand experience of the vibrant
and diversified culture in RBS; which is important to me and
made me feel that I want to be part of the team.
What training and development opportunities have you
received?
I started slightly early on my desk before my training in
London. I learned a fair bit about trading and the environs
surrounding the Asian currency markets. In London, we
were taught the intricacies of the financial products
currently in the markets.
Describe what you do
Presently I cover the emerging markets (EM) forex desk
and am currently the main market maker for USDSGD and
USDTHB on my desk. I also help traders to quote and take
positions in Non-Deliverable Forwards (NDFs) and swaps in
other Asian currencies.
Can you describe a project you’ve been involved in
that’s been particularly high-profile or challenging for
you?
Shortly after coming back to London, I was assigned to
Hong Kong to learn more about the CNH (offshore Chinese
Yuan) and report my findings to my manager. The CNH
market was still at its infancy then, it was started in Aug/Sep
2010 and it was definitely a big project for a Grad.
What attracted you to work at RBS?
RBS’s culture and environment are what attracted me to
work here most. The structure is very flat here; it doesn’t
matter whether you are a Director or an Intern, people will
respect you and listen to you as long as you are producing
and getting the work done.
How would you describe the RBS culture and working
environment?
It is a dynamic environment; people are nice and willing to
teach.
Describe what you do?
I interned at RBS prior to joining the Graduate Programme
as an Equity Derivative Sales Analyst, covering private
banking. Currently I am working in the Equity Delta team as
an Index Analyst, monitoring all major indices for internal
traders and external portfolio managers. I also write market
memos and help to cover sales while they are away.
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I am quite a sporty girl. I like to play squash and badminton,
and go swimming in my leisure time. I also enjoy catching
up with friends.
What attracted you to work for RBS?
Firstly, the unique programme provided by RBS, as it has
given me the opportunity to experience various trading
desks in Credit, FX and Rates. Also, my interviewers were
confident about the firm’s future. RBS seemed like the
perfect start to a career in an industry that was changing
quite drastically.
Describe what you do?
A lot of my job has to do with constantly watching for market
updates, and ensuring that relevant trade views and ideas
are brought to clients’ attention in an appropriate and timely
manner. I manage some of my own accounts now and
customise coverage in a manner that would best suit these
clients which is a very challenging yet fulfilling role.
How would you describe the culture and working
environment?
Extremely fast-paced would be the best way to put this
(partly owing to the nature of the FX markets)! Thankfully
I have some great team mates who always make sure I’m
constantly learning from everything that’s going on.
What level of client contact do you have in your role?
I provide coverage and speak to a number of clients on a
daily basis.
What attracted you to work for RBS?
I did not major in finance, but RBS was quick to recognise
my other skill sets and offered me a summer internship.
During my internship at RBS in Seoul, I really enjoyed the
working culture of RBS and also realised that the senior
staff are very patient and supportive.
How would you describe the culture and working
environment at RBS?
I think RBS has a very friendly, supportive and dynamic
working culture.
Tell us what you do
I started my Operations graduate programme rotations in
FX Middle Office, and since then have had an additional
four rotations, one in Chennai. This has enabled me to gain
a good overall view of different teams and their functions
in APAC Operations, gain managerial experience, and take
part in making strategic decisions for APAC Operations.
How has RBS contributed to your development as a
young person in Operations?
Senior management has been very supportive of the
growth of junior members, and this encourages initiatives
like the Young Bankers Association to provide grounds
for networking, which I believe is very important for our
professional development.
What attracted you to work at RBS?
The fact that RBS is one of the world’s major financial
institutions coupled with a very well structured graduate
program which provides an opportunity to explore different
areas in Technology. These were the major reasons for me
to kick start my career at RBS in GBM Technology.
How would you describe the RBS culture and working
environment?
RBS has a very open, lively and flat work culture where
people, including senior members of the Bank, are very
approachable. Given the fact that most of the projects
require the help, support and involvement of different areas
of the business to be successful, this is one of the best
aspects of the working environment here.
Furthermore, being a part of the graduate programme gives
one a great deal of exposure to the various teams, people
and projects, which ensures that there’s always something
to learn at every turn.
Describe what you do?
As a part of the Graduate Programme we get to do two
different rotations, which are intended to be in different
areas of GBM. My first rotation involved supporting the
Credit Trading desk as part of the Centralized Pricing (CP)
APAC Team. A normal day in the CP team would consist
of handling the daily requests and tasks of the desk,
communicating with other teams on adjoining systems
and resolving any issues. All in all, there is no dull day
in the world of CP. As part of the second rotation, I’m
working in the Prime Brokerage Technology team as a
Technical Analyst. Being part of an investment project, the
job involves doing analysis of the different aspects of the
project, sitting down with the users of the system to anaylze
the defects and assisting them migrate to the old system. In
summary, at RBS a graduate is given responsibilities right
from day one and is given an opportunity to deliver and
prove their potential. There is a real importance placed on
their growth and development.
“Being a part of the Graduate
Programme gives one a great deal of
exposure to the various teams, people
and projects, which ensures that there’s
always something to learn at every turn.”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
I’ve been involved in the Young Bankers Association, APAC,
as a Singapore representative. .We aim to hold various
events for new joiners and graduates so that they get a
platform to interact with new people, senior members of the
Bank and take part in fun events. Apart from this, I like to
play football over the weekend and catch up with the latest
movies.
Choose your perfect starting point
Our programmes
We deliver our services through two business lines, Global Banking
GBM Markets
What attracted you to work at RBS?
Describe what you do?
Operations
WHY IT’S
RIGHT FOR ME
RBS attracted me as it is one of the few banks with a
rotation programme, hence giving me the opportunity to
experience different industry and product groups.
Besides M&A and ECM, RBS is also one of the few banks
with a strong DCM franchise and lending capabilities, which
allows me to see the entire spectrum of IBD products that
we can offer clients.
I am currently with the FIG team. I support the team in their
pitching and deal execution
Everyday brings diverse and different challenges - it could
be performing a benchmarking exercise for the Chinese
banking industry to doing a valuation on an Australian asset
management firm to studying the regulations regarding
Indian insurance IPOs.
Technology
Finance
Also RBS focuses a lot on continuous training, so I can
avail myself to the various professional development
programmes available.
For example - advance corporate finance training.
How would you describe the RBS culture and working
environment?
I am impressed by the strong team culture and the good
guidance received from experienced seniors.
Technically I am on challenging tasks that require my
input and that need to be commercial with a value-adding
proposition in the end which is intellectually stimulating.
What do you enjoy most about your role and working at
RBS?
I enjoy working on challenging tasks and working with a
quality team every day.
“The networking sessions proved to be
very useful when needed to know more
about other financial sectors such as
credit and interest rates.”
More details of these programmes are outlined throughout the brochure
and on our website http://www.rbs.com/careers
My department makes it a point to organize weekly drinks,
and the occasional outing for juniors (the last one we
had was to Macau!) which gives us a chance to make
connections and friendships outside the office setting.
GBM Markets
GBM Markets is the hub of our sales and trading activities. It combines strengths
in Research & Strategy, Structuring, Sales and Trading in order to help our clients
achieve their investment, hedging and financing strategies. As a graduate in
Markets your programme will specialise in one of these following four areas.
GBM Markets – Trading
Few places are more pressurised than the trading desk. But if you’re sharp, quickwitted
and good with numbers, this is one of the most exhilarating careers the
financial markets has to offer.
What it involves
In the first year of the programme, you can expect to help price deals and
supervise low-risk portfolios.. From the second year onwards, your progress will be
down to you. Prove your abilities at an early stage, and we’ll rapidly devolve more
and more responsibilities to you.
WHY IT’S THE
RIGHT PLACE.
What we look for
Exceptional numerical and analytical skills are an absolute necessity. Candidates
looking to move into derivatives trading should have a mathematics, econometrics,
science or engineering degree since this type of trading involves a greater reliance
on quantitative analysis.
GBM Markets – Sales
Are you good with people and want to talk to clients? Enjoy mathematics and are
able to explain complex financial products in a simple, clear, and articulate manner?
Then there could be a place for you in sales.
What it involves
Once your initial training is complete, you’ll then work and learn from the best. We
believe in giving you as much exposure as possible: within six months of arrival,
you could be managing your own portfolio of clients.
Syndicate – acting as the key link between the markets and banking franchises
Syndicate represents a hybrid between the sales, trading and structuring
disciplines. If your interest lies in structuring, raising and distributing funding for
corporate and institutional clients, this is the area for you.
What we look for
Confident, tenacious and equipped with first-rate communication skills, you’ll know
how to build strong relationships with clients. Since you willoften be discussing
complex products, you’ll also need to be analytical, enjoy mathematics and have an
excellent grasp of the financial markets.
12
www.makeitrbs.com
13
GBM Markets – Structuring
The financial needs of our clients can be incredibly complex. Structurers use their
ingenuity to tailor products around those needs.
What it involves
As a structurer, you will package and price complex derivative products on behalf
of our clients. Working closely with the Sales and Trading teams, you’ll analyse a
client’s particular hedging or investment strategy and then build an appropriate
product solution around it. This is highly quantitative work that will see you
employing sophisticated mathematical models and interpreting the intricacies
of individual products, hedging institutional risk scenarios or meeting investor
requirements.
What we look for
Given the quantitative bias of this role, a background in mathematics, science
or engineering would be a real advantage. You will also need to be highly adept
at recognising patterns and solving complex problems. Communication and
interpersonal skills are an absolute must, since you’ll be working closely with our
front-office teams on a daily basis.
WHY IT’S THE
RIGHT PLACE.
GBM Markets – Research & Strategy
World class research and strategy helps keep the Bank ahead of developments in
the market. It allows our traders to formulate robust strategies, and our clients to
make informed decisions about their risk exposures and investments.
What it involves
Research analysts are client-focused and independent from the trading desks; they
typically specialise in a sector or product, becoming an expert in that specific area.
Strategists, by contrast, cover broader areas and work closely with our trading
desks. GBM also houses a specialist division called Quantitative Solutions that
uses advanced quantitative models to enhance investment and risk management
techniques.
What we look for
If you enjoy intellectually rigorous work, this is an excellent career choice. As a
researcher, your insights will not only feed into major financial decisions; they may
even shape the opinion of entire markets. Excellent analytical skills are essential,as
is the ability to communicate your findings clearly and concisely is also key.
GBM Banking – Corporate Finance
We advise companies on the strategic and financial issues of buying and selling
companies, parts of companies or assets – and help them to execute these
complex transactions. Our work spans a wide range of transactions: auctions,
leveraged buy-outs, public company takeovers and management buy-outs. We also
help clients defend against hostile bids, advise on strategic alliances and provide
fairness opinions on transactions.
WHY IT’S THE
RIGHT PLACE.
What will you be doing as an analyst?
You’ll work on a number of different projects and gain exposure to the full range of
corporate finance work. You will have the chance to get involved in every aspect
of a transaction. From making presentations to number crunching, from process
management to people management, no two days will ever be the same.
GBM Banking – Debt Capital Markets
Debt Capital Markets (DCM) provides financing solutions to a wide range of clients,
including sovereigns, agencies, financial institutions and corporates, working
seamlessly across our own product sets, and those of our internal partners to
maximise revenues from every opportunity.
What will you be doing as an analyst?
As an analyst, you will typically be responsible for preparing market analysis, credit
analysis (looking at the inner workings of a company and generating meaningful
conclusions) and client pitches, as well as producing information memorandums
and transaction modelling. Moreover, you will be given responsibility from day one,
so you will have a real opportunity to learn and progress quickly. In fact, in no time
at all, you will be interacting directly with clients.
16
www.makeitrbs.com
17
GBM Banking – Equities Origination
In Equities Origination we help corporates, governments and financial institutions
raise capital in the stock markets. Our role is one of trusted adviser on all matters
concerning the equity markets. And our work is broadly split and carried out by a
number of different specialist teams: Equity Capital Markets, Corporate Broking,
Equity-Linked and Strategic Equity Solutions.
What will you be doing as an analyst?
You’ll become familiar with the equity markets (and perhaps other capital
markets) from an early stage. You’ll also enjoy plenty of client exposure and early
responsibility. Your day-to-day work will be diverse and include helping compose
presentations to clients, helping clients with their messaging, keeping clients
abreast of market developments/rumour and execution of transactions.
GBM Banking – Sector & Country Coverage
WHY IT’S THE
RIGHT PLACE.
In Sector & Country Coverage, we use five industry-specific expertise to generate
investment banking ideas and opportunities for our clients. Virtually every major
transaction in GBM Banking is underpinned and originated by our efforts in this
area.
What will you be doing as an analyst?
You will learn how to perform in-depth analysis of companies in your sector as
well as how to consolidate your findings into compelling client presentations. We
will also show you how to carry out company valuations and use financial models.
Once you’re up and running, we’ll expect you to spot strategic opportunities for our
product teams.
GBM Banking – Portfolio
Portfolio consists of three businesses: Transaction and Portfolio Management
(TPM), Global Portfolio Distribution (GPD) and Portfolio Analytics (PA). The
combined teams are at the heart of managing GBM’s portfolio and work closely
with Sector & Country Coverage and the product specialists to determine the best
use of the Bank’s capital.
What will you be doing as an analyst?
Join TPM and you’ll help originate, structure and execute transactions for GBM’s
core corporate client base.
Join GPD, on the other hand, and you’ll work with portfolio managers from around
the world to identify assets designated for sale.
