At Our School… Wayoata School Appreciates Their Volunteers! On Wednesday, May 29 th , Wayoata students and staff participated in a school wide assembly to honour its many volunteers. Approximately 25 volunteers were treated to songs and presentations. Volunteers received certificates and a gift on behalf of the school. Following the assembly volunteers were invited to have refreshments. Wayoata School is very fortunate to have almost 45 volunteers who participate in a variety of capacities throughout the school year. We value all their time and commitment in supporting our school community. A Day in the Life of Kindergarten On the evening of May 15 th , we welcomed the new students who will be attending kindergarten in the fall. Thanks to Mrs. Johnson, Ms. Moore, Ms. Unrau, Mrs. Fust, Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Gibson, the students were treated to an evening of fun filled activities. The students experienced some of what a day in kindergarten brings. We look forward to seeing these students again in September. School Fundraising Thank you to all of the families who participated in our walkathon last fall. As a school community we raised $3,504.97. A portion of this money was used to buy the prizes for this walkathon as well as future walkathons. Along with the purchase of the prizes, we were able to pay the cost of The Barber of Seville production by Al Simmons to come to Wayoata School. It was a real treat to have Al Simmons come to Wayoata to entertain the students. Several year-end activities for students are also supported through fundraising such as treats for the Grade 5 farewell, movie day and the visit to next year’s class. Fundraising money was also used to support the spring musical production. Each year, we rent sound equipment for the Christmas concert and the spring musical. In order to reduce those yearly rental costs, we will be allocating some of our fundraising money each year to purchase equipment to support the musical productions. At Our School… Our students are very fortunate to be supported by a number of groups and individuals who contribute to make Wayoata School a caring, supportive environment for children. We would like to thank the following groups and individuals for contributing to a successful year: the students who put forth their best effort each day and make us smile with their enthusiasm and zest for life the parents who support the students to be successful and always answer our calls for help the teachers who work each day and many evenings and weekends to ensure the students have the best learning experience possible the educational assistants who support students to ensure they are successful the custodians who keep our school clean and shiny the secretary who greets all visitors with a warm friendly smile and looks after the needs of all staff, students and their families the community connector who welcomes preschoolers and their families into our school each week and assists with all of our family events the breakfast club volunteers, who greet our students early in the morning with a smile and a nutritious breakfast the Canterbury Park Before and after school program staff who care for our students before and after school the lunch supervisors who work each lunch hour to ensure our students are safe the dog handler and dogs who visit and bring smiles to our students the seniors who knit mittens and hats to keep our students warm in winter the Feed my Lambs volunteer who drops by with bread for the breakfast program and lunches the artist in the school, KC Adams, who provided an exciting art experience for students and staff the entertainer, Al Simmons, who introduced our students to opera with much joy and laughter the members of the Wayoata School Community council who give so much of themselves and contribute so much to our students the members of the lunch program committee who put in many volunteer hours to ensure our parents can be sure that their children have a safe, supervised environment in which to eat lunch the parents and community volunteers who always answer the call for help during hot lunch, popcorn days, immunizations and in classrooms the young adults who volunteer to come to camp as counselors to support our Grade 5 students the student teachers who worked with our students this year and continue to come and volunteer for school activities the high school students from Murdoch Mackay and College Pierre Elliot Trudeau who volunteer in classrooms and during special activities the divisional staff who support a variety of programs for students As the African proverb states, it truly does take a village to raise a child.
