Where has the time gone? It is hard to believe that we are coming to the
end of another school year. The students and staff have been working very
hard all year to accomplish all of the goals that they set out for themselves.
We have watched our students grow and learn throughout the year both
academically and as responsible citizens of our school community.
As we move into the final month of the school year, we are in a time where
we are reviewing the school plan for this school year to determine our
successes in meeting our goals. At the same time we are creating the
school plan for the 2013-2014 school year. Creating a school plan is a
coordinated effort as parents and staff work together to create outcomes,
goals and strategies to ensure the success of our students in several
priority areas. The priority areas are developed from the priorities of the
school division. Through the monthly Wayoata School Community Council
meetings, parents engage in discussions about the school plan and parent
representatives are invited to join in the initial school planning meeting with
staff.
We are well into the school planning process for the 2013-2014 school
year. The work began in April when a group of teachers met, along with a
parent representative from the Wayoata School Community Council, to
create three outcomes that became the focus for our school plan. During
the professional development day in April, the entire staff met together in
committees to plan goals and strategies for the upcoming year to meet the
outcomes. For the upcoming school year our priorities are; focusing on
student growth in literacy and numeracy skills, ensuring all students will be
able to state and apply the school wide expectations in the areas of focus,
and offering student choice in the demonstration of growth in technology
skills. When we return from the summer break, the school plan will be a
focus as we begin our work with students for another year.
The end of the year often brings about changes for some staff and for some
students. We will be saying goodbye to Mrs. McRorie who will be moving to
work full time at Joseph Teres School. We thank her for her work as a
resource teacher supporting our students. For those students and families
who are leaving the Wayoata School Community this year, we hope we
have made a positive impact in your lives and we wish you all the best. For
those students returning in the fall; rest, relax and recharge your batteries
over the summer. We have many exciting activities planned for next year.
Have a wonderful summer break!
Wayoata School Appreciates Their Volunteers!
On Wednesday, May 29 th , Wayoata students and staff participated in
a school wide assembly to honour its many volunteers. Approximately
25 volunteers were treated to songs and presentations. Volunteers
received certificates and a gift on behalf of the school. Following the
assembly volunteers were invited to have refreshments. Wayoata
School is very fortunate to have almost 45 volunteers who participate
in a variety of capacities throughout the school year. We value all their
time and commitment in supporting our school community.
A Day in the Life of Kindergarten
On the evening of May 15 th , we welcomed the new students who will be
attending kindergarten in the fall. Thanks to Mrs. Johnson, Ms. Moore,
Ms. Unrau, Mrs. Fust, Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Gibson, the students were
treated to an evening of fun filled activities. The students experienced
some of what a day in kindergarten brings. We look forward to seeing
these students again in September.
School Fundraising
Thank you to all of the families who participated in our walkathon last fall. As a school community we
raised $3,504.97. A portion of this money was used to buy the prizes for this walkathon as well as
future walkathons. Along with the purchase of the prizes, we were able to pay the cost of The Barber
of Seville production by Al Simmons to come to Wayoata School. It was a real treat to have Al
Simmons come to Wayoata to entertain the students. Several year-end activities for students are
also supported through fundraising such as treats for the Grade 5 farewell, movie day and the visit to
next year’s class. Fundraising money was also used to support the spring musical production. Each
year, we rent sound equipment for the Christmas concert and the spring musical. In order to reduce
those yearly rental costs, we will be allocating some of our fundraising money each year to purchase
equipment to support the musical productions.
Thank you for your continued support. Look for information in the fall about the 2013 walkathon
scheduled for October.
Visiting New
Classrooms!
Students will be visiting their
new classrooms and meeting
their new classmates and
lessen the anxiety and stress
about moving into the next
grade that often occurs over
the summer.
2013/2014 Student Fees
Student fees for all students in Grades 1 through 5 have been set at
$45.00 for
the next school year. It has been our experience that September
can be a month filled with significant expenses for many families. In
order to try to lessen the September expenses for families, we
would like to give you the opportunity to pay next year’s student fees
in advance.
If you would like to make this payment before the end of the school
year, please send payment (no post dated cheques please) to the
school, prior to June 21st. To ensure that the student fees are
applied to the correct student, please clearly indicate your
child(ren)’s name on your envelope.
“Hometime” Arrangements
In the interest of maximizing learning time in the classroom and
keeping interruptions to a minimum, please make ‘hometime’
arrangements (including school pick up times, play dates,
appointments and other arrangements) with your child(ren) before
they leave for school in the morning.
Please write a note in their agenda if you are varying from routine so
that the teacher is aware of what is required at the end of the day,
whether they are to go home with someone else, or to wait at school
to be picked up. This will help eliminate confusion for the student
and the staff, and will be more efficient for everyone. Thank you!
There are many times throughout the year that we find, for
one reason or another, that we need to provide a change of
clothes to a child. We have a small collection of clothes that
we share with children when needed however this collection
has dwindled over the last few years. If you are cleaning out
closets and have clothes that you are looking to recycle,
please think of us. We are especially in need of pants for
both boys and girls. We thank you for any clothing you can
share with our children.
Yo Yos
On June 4 th , Around the World
Entertainment will be performing their
School is Cool assembly for our
students. Through the use of yo-yo
tricks, students will be entertained while
hearing a message the importance of
school. For several days after the
presentation, yo-yos will be available for
sale to the students. The yo-yos will be
available from June 4 th to June 10 th . If you wish to order a
yo-yo, please fill out the order form that will be distributed
and hand it in along with the appropriate amount of money
to the classroom teacher. The yo-yos that were ordered will
be distributed to students by the end of each day. In order
to lessen the chance that yo-yos get mixed up, names will
be written on the yo-yos before they are handed out.
Students will be allowed to use the yo-yos at recess in a
designated area of the playground. Having an area
designated for yo-yos will allow for greater safety and less
chance of people walking into yo-yos and being hurt.
Garden News
Our school garden that looked so beautiful last spring and summer is starting to come to
life. Our goal for the next month is to keep the weeds at bay and nurture any perennials
that we have coming up. We will also plant some annuals if we have anyone interested
in sharing watering duties throughout the summer. This would involve about an hour
once a week for setting up and turning on a sprinkler and then putting it away. If anyone
is interested in finding out more about helping with the garden this summer,
please call the school office at 204-958-6840.
I would like to thank the Hoborough family for looking after the garden last summer
Disposal Of Medication Guidelines
To promote a safe school environment, the school will destroy any medication left
at the school over the summer vacation. The school will take the medication to
the nearest pharmacy that participates in the hazardous waste disposal program.
This action will ensure that outdated medication is not administered to your
children and eliminates storage of medication at the school over the summer. To
ensure that the school does not dispose of wanted medication, please pick up
your child’s medication prior to the summer vacation. Please note that
medication cannot be sent home with your child.
To ensure the school is using current information about your child’s medication, new forms must be
completed each year. A convenient time to receive these forms might be when you come to pick up
your child’s unused medication in June.
We would like to thank you for your help in reducing the risks at school for our
students who have life-threatening food allergies. Your support of our request to
refrain from sending nuts and fish, or products containing them is greatly
appreciated. We realize this may have posed some inconvenience for you when
preparing lunches and snacks for your child. Eliminating the allergic substances
from the classroom is an important part of reducing the risk of a fatal reaction
occurring at school, considering the fact that a very small amount can cause a
severe allergy reaction leading to death within minutes.
Last Day For Milk
The last day for the milk program is Friday, June 21 st . Milk will not be available for lunch during the last
week of school, unless we have some inventory left over from the previous week.
Lost And Found
If your child is missing an item of clothing, please make sure you visit the
Lost and Found before June 28 h . After this date, all items will be
removed from the lost and found and donated to charity.
Ms. Johnson and Miss Moore’s
Kindergarten Classes
Let’s dive on in! Kindergarten has jumped head-first into the waters of our
big, blue oceans! Our latest wonderings have taken us below the surface to
explore life under the sea. The oceans are home to many amazing
creatures for us to discover.
● How do fish or sharks breathe? Do they all
have gills?
● Why do sharks have so many teeth?
● Why are eels electric?
● How do sea turtles swim?
● How do bubbles work?
● Why is the ocean blue?
● Why do sharks eat fish? People?
● Why do hammer head sharks have eyes on
the side of the head?
● Are sea horses fish?
● What lives in the Midnight Zone (deepest
part of the ocean)?
During our exploration we have taken a trip to TCI to see their production of The Little Mermaid –
Ursula’s eels were very life-like! We have been learning new art techniques to help us document our
ocean explorations. Our class is full of amazing sea shells for us to examine. We have been reading
books and watching videos to expand our thinking about oceans. Where will we end up next?
Mrs. Copeland’s
Grade 1 and Grade 2 Class
It's hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close. In the almost ten months we have been
together we have worked very hard and learned to be a wonderful community of learners. In our
classroom we have learned to share, respect each other and work together. We have learned to follow
the hallway and lunch matrices and play safely on the playground! I have enjoyed watching each of the
children grow and develop as independent workers and learners! Way to go everyone!
Over the summer months students can keep their reading and writing skills sharp by reading from a
variety of genres as often as possible. Any kind of purposeful writing that your child can engage in over
the summer is also beneficial. Examples of such writings are postcards, lists, and journals or diary
entries. Have fun!
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with all of the students in our classroom and wish each and every
one of you a safe and happy summer holiday!
The grade one students have been studying cycles in math and
science. We are learning about all the things that go around: seasons,
months, days of the week and times in a day. We continue to work on
numbers. As we add and subtract, we count forward and backward. We
count by ones and twos and fives. We can see how numbers can be
broken into parts and written as equations.
We are also enjoying fairy tales. We have been listening to fairy tales,
and acting out plays. We are now writing our own fairy tales and
creating art and structures related to castles, dragons and story
characters.
In Social Studies we have been learning about making decisions that
reflect care, concern, and responsibility for the natural and social
environment that we live in. We have been learning about Manitoba
symbols such as the prairie crocus, the white spruce and the great grey
owl. We are learning about Canadian symbols and the words to our
national anthem.
Mr. LePage’s
Grade 4 & Grade 5 Class
On Wednesday, May 15, in our family groups, all of the students of Wayoata School cleaned up- our
community, that is. Here is what Mr.LePage’s grade 4 and grade 5 class had to say about the event:
Daniel – “We went out to pick up trash. There was a lot of it!”
Reece – “We went on Ravelston Street.”
Kate – “We scrambled in and out of bushes, stooping down to pick up garbage like it was a game. Some
people stopped and stared. Others smiled.”
Ainsley – “It felt like I was making a difference.”
Miranda – “My partner and I were on bush duty. The bushes were very ‘pokey’ and I got a couple, as you
may call them, ‘battle scars.’”
Baxter – “We were the quickest and most successful group.”
Aspen – “This may be really gross, but I had to pick up dog poop. Don’t worry, it was in a plastic bag. I don’t
want to do that again!”
Kelly – “To be honest, I didn’t think we needed gloves because we didn’t pick up smelly garbage. But they
were dirty!”
Kayden – “We did this to keep our community clean and not dirty.”
Conner – “It was really quite fun!”
Ariah – “I felt pretty good about helping out with garbage. I think it made my day, too.”
Shelby – “It felt like we were cleaning up the earth. It made me want to clean some more.”
Alyssa – “I didn’t mind picking up garbage because it is a nice thing to do.”
Tyreke – “During the search for garbage, I even found a nail and a screw!”
Hunter – “Someone found a tennis ball. It was funny with the tennis ball.”
Terron – “We got lots of garbage. The big piece was a coffee can! It was huge!”
Gavin – “When we were cleaning up, I found nine game coins.”
Cloey – “We found a big box. So we broke it apart so it could fit in the bag.”
Ethan – “I found, like, five rotten apples.”
Domanic – “We found tissue – none of it was really smelly. We, also, saw a small brown animal.”
Brenden – “I loved it because we walked together!”
Arielle – “When we were done I felt that we made a change to people’s streets.”
Kitty – “It’s good picking up garbage and recyclables because if you do, then our neighbourhood would be
clean.”
Matthew – “I really liked cleaning up all the garbage. It makes me feel like I can do anything.”
The field of robotics is exciting and engaging for students and the utilization of “Solar Powered Robotics
Kits” is a way to give the grade 5 students in Mrs. Nykoluk’s and Mr. LePage’s class a hands on learning
experience that further addresses the Grade 5 science curriculum “Simple Machines and
Weather”. Students will work in teams while using the robotics kits. The students will view videos, read
articles, take part in discussions on robotics and solar power. Each student will also complete assignments
as individuals or in groups. At the end of our week study each student will create a robot that will run on a
solar panel. A final report and presentation will be displayed and shared with other classmates and students
The grade 3 choir has begun working on a project called songs of Canada. Each time Grade 3
choir meets the students will be introduced to a new Pop/Rock/Country/Folk song by a Canadian
artist. They will learn the melody and lyrics and end the period with a sing along of the song. If you
have a student in grade 3 ask them what they have learned in choir and try having a sing along of
your own!
Roots Of Empathy
Roots of Empathy is a classroom program that has shown dramatic effect in
reducing levels of aggression among school children while raising
social/emotional competence and increasing empathy. The purpose of this
program is to build caring, peaceful and civil societies through the
development of empathy in children and adults.
Roots of Empathy is taking place in Mrs. Hall’s grade two classroom. Our
Roots of Empathy teacher is Brynlee Baran, daughter of Mrs. Baran. The
theme for this month was Who Am I. The grade two students learned that babies have individual
temperaments, and are unique and special individuals. The grade two students then focused on who they
are, and what makes them important. Students also learned about the baby’s place in the world, and that
we have responsibilities as citizens of the community and world to make sure that our baby has a safe and
healthy environment in which to grow.
Brynlee and Mrs. Baran came to visit the grade two class, where the students welcomed Brynlee with a
welcome song. The boys and girls saw how much Brynlee has grown, and the types of food that Brynlee
eats. Brynlee loves standing with help, and even stood for a few seconds on her own. She even tried to
crawl out of the room! The students also discussed temperament and that babies must never be left alone,
unless they are in their cribs. The visit ended with our goodbye song. We can’t wait for Brynlee and Mrs.
Baran to visit again!
If you’d like to see what we’ve learned during Roots of Empathy, please stop by the school to see our
bulletin board which will be updated every month so that you can see Brynlee grow and change too.
Wayoata School Community Council
The Wayoata School Community Council is a small group of parents who work to support programs and
School Community Council organized 3 fundraisers and many hot lunches. With proceeds from the sales
of vegetables from Peak of the Market, cheese from Bothwell and flowers from Bloomers, along with the
proceeds from the hot lunches the Wayoata School Community Council was able to support the school
the next school year. We would like to thank all of the parents and families who supported us through
fundraising or who participated in the events that were sponsored by the Wayoata School Community
Staff Appreciation
During the week of May 21 st to May 24 th the staff of Wayoata School was treated to staff appreciation week
by the Wayoata School Community Council. Each day there were more surprises. The week began with a
small gift of post it notes and teaching supplies. These very practical gifts created a lot of excitement from
the staff. For the next three days, we were treated to snacks of muffins, bagels and some home baking
and desserts. On the final day of the week we were treated to lunch from the Olive Garden. The staff
would like to say a HUGE THANK YOU to the parents who organized the week. Our hearts were warmed
and our smiles grew bigger each day. It was truly a wonderful week. Thank you for thinking of us during
your already busy time as you support so many wonderful events at our school.
