Remote sensing technologies provide several benefits. They support the collection of spatially comprehensive datasets that are not otherwise readily available. In addition, the collection of data from a satellite or aircraft is nonintrusive, a very valuable feature for assessing ecologically and culturally sensitive areas. Semiautomated data processing of remotely sensed images can be a cost-effective way to reliably detect and identify features and quantify parameters over large areas more frequently. This feature is desirable for monitoring spatially heterogeneous and temporally dynamic arid and semiarid environments. Historic archives of remotely sensed data permit retrospective assessments and are thus suitable for long-term monitoring (Washington-Allen et al. 2006). Figure 2-12.
