Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation Past successes and milestones (also see our annual summary reports) 1998 – Became registered charity 2002-2003 – Strategic Plan development 2004 – Board of Director Governance plan developed Developed coastal management plans for Sauble Beach, Oliphant, Saugeen Shores, Kincardine, Port Franks, Providence Bay (Manitoulin Island) and Huron-Kinloss beach. Developed educational resource kits for elementary students. The kits focused on Lake Huron’s sensitive coastal ecosystems and climate change. Hosted seventh biennial “Is the Coast Clear?” conference on Lake Huron’s coastal environment in 2012, with 140 participants. [“Is the Coast Clear?” is the Centre’s flagship public education forum. We secure top speakers on the current and emerging issues facing the lake. The event typically alternates between Port Elgin and Grand Bend]. Most recent accomplishments Awarded Trillium grant to implement three outreach programs: 1. Green Ribbon program for recognizing citizen groups doing exceptional work in caring for their beach environment. 2. Coast Watchers – volunteer beach monitoring program 3. Municipal Coastal Clinics – workshops to deliver best practices for beach management, and addressing local coastal issues. Research into the invasive plant Phragmites australis on Lake Huron beaches. This study is helping municipalities develop targeted programs. 37 12
