Building Electricity
Mission College campus buildings typically
use electricity for lighting, motors, fans,
heating and cooling systems, and plug loads,
such as computers. We purchase electricity
from the Los Angeles Department of Water
and Power.
We purchased 5,349 megawatt-hours
(MWh) of electricity from Los Angeles
Department of Water and Power in
2008, equivalent to 2,984 MTCO2e.
Transportation Fuels
Commuting is part of everyday life at a
community college, for faculty, staff, and
students, alike. In 2008, Mission College
student, staff, and faculty commuters
were responsible for approximately 2,535
MTCO2e of indirect mobile (gasoline and
diesel) emissions.
Building Natural Gas
As of 2008, the main sources of natural
gas consumption are boilers and kitchen
equipment. 7 The Southern California Gas
Company supplies this natural gas.
We purchased 82,548 therms of natural
gas from Southern California Gas
Company, equivalent to 439 MTCO2e.
What is a metric ton of carbon dioxide equivalent (MTCO2e)?
Each of the six Kyoto greenhouse gases has different global warming potentials, meaning
they have differing abilities to trap heat in the atmosphere. The total emissions of all six
greenhouse gases are normalized according to their global warming equivalence to a
molecule of carbon dioxide (CO2e). And a metric ton is approximately 2204 pounds!
