Unlike many ra the r simpl y wri tten reli g io us plays, th is wo rk in telli ge nt ly and interestingly combines court room dram a with can . te mporary concerns - for to lerance and und erstanding. I t describes the atti tudes and the perso na lities of those w ho we re confronted by Christ in the fa teful d ays before Good Friday. We hea r of the strugg le for po li tica l power in the jerusa lem of th at time , we ga in insights into the jealousy o f ) ud as, the ambitiousness of Kaiphas , the hi gh priest , and the callous indifference of Pila te , the Roman procurator. The very large cast is fortunate in having its own rehear?al studio (a form er ci ty hyd ro substation made avail able through the courtesy of the City of Winnipeg) and is bu sil y e ngaged in the many tas ks that are necessary to bring about a good evening of reli giOus theatre. Prozess Jesu Das Winnipeg Mennonite Theatre gibt bekannt, dass Uebungen fuer d as naechste Buehnenstueck, ein zeitgemaesses, religoeses Spiel, welches unter anderem die Jahrhundertfeier der Mennoniten und der Stadt Winnipeg foerdern soli, jetzt im Gange sind. Da wohl die verschjedenartigen Veranstaltungen in diesem fuer die Mennoniten so historisch wichtigem Jahr von vorwiegend religoeser Art sind, wird ein interessantes Spiel mit dem Tite l: "Prozess Jesu" von Albert Fischel ins Deutsche uebertragen, gebracht Originaltext vom italienischen Schriftsteller Diego Fabri. Die Auffuehrungen finden am 15. und 16. November im Playhouse Theatre statt. Dieses Buehnenstueck ist eine hoechst interessante und eigenartige Beschre ibung der Ansichten und menschlichen Schwaechen derer, die Christus in den verhaengnisvollen Tagen kurz vor Karfrei tag gegen ueberstanden. A Story of an Emigration The f irst Mennonite settler, 10 MJnitoba arrived in the summer of 1874. Thp Earth is Round is the mov ing story of a young girl and her fam il y who migrate f rom the fertile steppes of Russia to the newly opened "East Reserve" of Southern Manitoba. The author, Margaret Epp, has managed with rare ski ll to catch the feelings of joy ,and frustrations w hich these ear ly settlers experienced. Mi ss Epp was asked to write a juvenile novel about the migration of the Mennonites by the Board of Publications of the Mennonite Brethre n Conference of Canada to help celebrate the centen nial of the first arrival. Gerhard Lohrenz , C h a irm an of the Mennonite Centennial Committee of Manitoba, says: The Earth is f, Winnipeg Iyrici, t and journalist, wri tes: I could n't put t his book down. It has everything . .. action, humor, family and community strugg les, love and tears .. :all wrapped up in the absorbing talc of a Russian Mennonite community's move to Mani toba in 1 874. Maybe the fact that we didn't go far nor to m a ny places had something to do with it. At Falcon Lake I was bopping a tennis ball around with a friend one early evening in July when the sweet sounds of Low German wafted our way. I listened more intently dn d discovered the words weren't nearly as sweet as the sounds. Somebody had mi ssed an east serve and was expressing himself in colorful barnyard Plautdietsch. I waited a few minutes a nd just when my next-court neighbour had settled in to receive a serve I called out: "Drasch ahm eint! " I shouldn't have said that. At the critical moment he stopped, turned my way and received . a blistering serve on the side of the head. He staggered in a tight circle before he dropped to one knee and babbled in what sounded a lot like FI-ench, for almost a full minute. But why not? It's a f ree country. And anyway, French is one of our official languages. If French is his language for babbling, so be it. And within a week The Frau and I spent a day at our Roseau River acreage (that's a term we've adopted because people around Altona say the place is too small to be called a farm, and too scruffy to rank as a summer cottage), and there were a couple of fishermen pulling in some pretty nice pickerel. They were conversing in the language of the nation - English this time - until they hooked a five-pound pike. A five-pound pike was just what they needed to switch into the language of exuberance. You guessed it, Low German. "Gomps, Yunges, daut's ein yevoultya, Harre DiesteU dei es dylepsrich! " Till then The Frau and I'd been languishing in the cool water at the edge of the stream, but all this Low German aroused our attention. Joining in the jubilation I called out: "Hoult gout faust senst felia ye dem!" Well, they almost didn't and almost did. That is , they almost didn't hold tight and almost lost him. The fishermen recovered just in time to grapple the wildly-thrashing fish to a safe spot away from the river. They looked our wav with a big grin, and announced that this called for a Blue. One of them - a 200 pounder - scrambled up the ban k to their car and soon came back with a large blue box filled with stubby brown bottles. They drank from them and the ir joy increased. I guess Low German sprung on you from amongst the reeds along the Roseau has that effect. But the Low German sank lower and lower and soon we headed back to the old railway bunk car that is serving as summer cottage. In Fargo, North Dakota's largest shopping centre there flourishes a western outfitting store, thanks probably to a lot of people like I who have delusions about capturing some fine careless rapturing of western ness by donn ing co'wboy garb. - I had just been humiliated by a salesman who guffawed like a genuine TV saloon cowboy when I enquired about a size 17 shirt with 24 inch sleeves. It seems cowboys aren't built like that, and, furthermore, he made some wisecrack about my being tapered the wrong way for a western-cut shirt. As I slunk sheepishly past the rack of spurs I was suddenly overcome by an urge to snap on a pair and leap on the back of the offending salesman with a mighty "Hi Ho Silver, Away." As a self-appointed goodwill a mbassador to "the land of the free and the home of the brave" however I fought down the te mpt a tion~. ' But all was well a few minutes later. While I was backing the family car off the parking lot there came a friendly wave and greeting: "Goundach, Panna." T here was one of our Altona hockey players trailing a big boat behind; off to Detroit Lakes or some such exotic summer vacation haven.
