In 2006, <strong>the</strong> city c<strong>on</strong>sumed 360 milli<strong>on</strong> cubic metres of recycled water, 10% of <strong>the</strong> overall annual water<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong>.<br />

In 2006, a recycled-water irrigati<strong>on</strong> z<strong>on</strong>e of 200 thous<strong>and</strong> Mu (13 thous<strong>and</strong> hectares) was built in Da Xing,<br />

which utilized recycled water of 100 milli<strong>on</strong> cubic meters annually. In 2007, Project to Divert Reclaimed<br />

Water to <strong>the</strong> West Part of <strong>the</strong> City was completed in No. 6 Water Supply Plant <strong>and</strong> provided 80 thous<strong>and</strong><br />

cubic metres of reclaimed water each day to Gao Jing <strong>and</strong> Shi Jing Shan Power Plants, or 30 milli<strong>on</strong><br />

cubic metres annually.<br />

So far Beijing has built 6 reclaimed water plants, with a daily producti<strong>on</strong> capacity of 370 thous<strong>and</strong><br />

cubic metres <strong>and</strong> reclaimed water pipelines of 380 kilometres. The applicati<strong>on</strong> of Membrane Processing<br />

technology has ensured <strong>the</strong> safety <strong>and</strong> quality of reclaimed water <strong>and</strong> provided technical guarantee for<br />

promoti<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> disseminati<strong>on</strong> of reclaimed water utilizati<strong>on</strong>. Olympic Lake has used high quality reclaimed<br />

water produced by Qing He Reclaimed Water Plant.<br />

Beijing plans to use reclaimed water of 480 milli<strong>on</strong> cubic metres to fulfill 50% of its committed goal<br />

this year <strong>and</strong> 600 milli<strong>on</strong> cubic metres of reclaimed water in 2008. Reclaimed water is important water<br />

resource for agricultural irrigati<strong>on</strong>, ecology of rivers <strong>and</strong> lakes, industrial cooling <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r purposes.<br />

V. Water Envir<strong>on</strong>ment C<strong>on</strong>structi<strong>on</strong> in Olympic Stadiums <strong>and</strong> Gymnasiums<br />

All stadiums <strong>and</strong> gymnasiums are equipped with water-saving facilities to process all waste water. Water<br />

system in Olympic Lake uses high st<strong>and</strong>ard reclaimed water processed with membrane technology.<br />

They also adopt reclaimed water utilizati<strong>on</strong> technology which utilizes 4.69 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>s of reclaimed water<br />

each year, rain water collecti<strong>on</strong> system which utilizes 1.05 milli<strong>on</strong> t<strong>on</strong>s of rain water each year, <strong>and</strong> water<br />

infiltrati<strong>on</strong> system of more than 1 milli<strong>on</strong> square metres to replenish <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>serve underground water.<br />

VI. Sticking to Ecological Treatment of Rivers <strong>and</strong> Completing Treatment<br />

of Backb<strong>on</strong>e Water Systems<br />

Beijing has 500-kilometre-l<strong>on</strong>g rivers within <strong>the</strong> Sixth Ring Road. But water in some watercourses was<br />

black <strong>and</strong> smelly because of <strong>the</strong> direct inflow of waste water; <strong>the</strong> poor water envir<strong>on</strong>ment quality in rivers<br />

<strong>and</strong> lakes was <strong>the</strong> biggest headache for urban Beijing. To solve <strong>the</strong> problem, Beijing has worked out <strong>the</strong><br />

work strategy which specifies river treatment as <strong>the</strong> fist step in polluti<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trol, to clean <strong>the</strong> water quality<br />

as <strong>the</strong> main goal in rivers <strong>and</strong> lakes treatment. It has been investing <strong>on</strong> managing several rivers each year<br />

through preventing <strong>and</strong> c<strong>on</strong>trolling polluti<strong>on</strong> of discharged waster water into rivers. The problem of direct<br />

inflow of waster water into rivers has been basically solved <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> history of discharging waste water<br />

into urban watercourses was ended.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> process of river treatment, ecological water treatment technology was adopted to restore<br />

diversity of aquatic plants <strong>and</strong> animals in watercourses. More than 60 types of aquatic plants are planted<br />

such as reed, cattail <strong>and</strong> lotus <strong>and</strong> more than 10 species of aquatic animals such as fish <strong>and</strong> shrimp<br />

(over 50 t<strong>on</strong>s each year) are raised in <strong>the</strong> watercourses, which have effectively protected <strong>the</strong> health of<br />

watercourses. Ecological-restorati<strong>on</strong> technologies have also created c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s for reclaimed water<br />

utilizati<strong>on</strong> in rivers <strong>and</strong> lakes.<br />

During <strong>the</strong> five years from 2002 to 2006, <strong>the</strong> percentage of watercourses cleaned increased from 15%<br />

to 85%. Over 70% of urban rivers <strong>and</strong> lakes have reached quality st<strong>and</strong>ard, of which 45% are ecological<br />

watercourses. Qing He, Liang Shui He <strong>and</strong> Tu Cheng Gou rivers have gained clean water. In 2006, while<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>mental water c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> from urban rivers <strong>and</strong> lakes was increased to 180 milli<strong>on</strong> cubic metres<br />

<strong>and</strong> clean water supply was less than 100 milli<strong>on</strong> cubic metres, Beijing managed to keep good water<br />

envir<strong>on</strong>ment in urban rivers <strong>and</strong> lakes.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong>, Beijing has also taken measures to guarantee good tournament envir<strong>on</strong>ment for Olympic<br />

Triathl<strong>on</strong> <strong>and</strong> Aquatics sport. The water quality has already met <strong>the</strong> requirement for matches. Meanwhile<br />

it has also improved <strong>the</strong> surrounding envir<strong>on</strong>ment of Shi San Ling Reservoir <strong>and</strong> Shun Yi Aquatic <strong>Sport</strong>s<br />

Field.<br />

In nine m<strong>on</strong>ths time, <strong>the</strong> 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing. To host a unique <strong>and</strong> high st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

Olympic Games is <strong>the</strong> dream of each Chinese. Beijing Water Authority will follow <strong>the</strong> requirements of<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>7th</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>World</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>C<strong>on</strong>ference</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Sport</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Envir<strong>on</strong>ment<br />
