Boys Lacrosse on winning Streak!
The CAL Lacrosse team had another big divisional
test as the traveled
to Kentucky
County
Day on Tuesday.
The Centurion
squad came out
firing! Great
ball movement
and two quick
goals by Jonathon Lytle (Chad Lewellyn assist) and
Trent Erps (Joe Zieser assist) led to a 2-0 CAL lead.
The Bearcats were knocked back on their heels as all
the momentum was with the Centurions. (continued
Momentum can be fleeting however and the CAL squad
had trouble staying on track and halftime arrived with
the teams knotted at 2-2. The balance of this contest can
best be described as “odd.” Missed calls, mystery calls
and even a brief altercation lead to a very up and down
match.
Ben Burchell blasted in a fast-break score and then assisted
on a goal by Mark Highbaugh for a 4-3 CAL
lead. Two goals by the Bearcats put the Centurions behind
for the first time in the game. Burchell hit another
unassisted score with 5:17 left in the 4 th quarter to tie
the game again at 5 goals apiece.
The tension was high and the CAL defense responded
with a great late-game stand. On the offensive half,
CAL patiently looked for opportunities. With just
over two minutes left in the game, Burchell found
such an opportunity. He threaded a pass to a driving
Erps for his second goal and the game winner! The
Centurions posted a 6-5 victory for their fifth win in a
row.
This week CAL will play at Ballard on Tuesday,
the regular season and host Eastern; this is SENIOR
Tessa Sipe and Lilli Popovich touched down upon the field like cyclones,
blowing away the competition. Sipe won the 300 hurdles, long jump and
pole vault. Popovich took the 100 hurdles, shot and the discus. Isaiah
Ragland rained down thunder on the 100 and 300 hurdles, rounding up the
multi-event winners. Hannah Herd, Kenzie Stovall and Jessica Bozell
claimed wins in the 1600, high jump and triple jump respectively.
Some of the Centurions’ best performers
then took the storm to the Eastern Relays on Friday and Saturday hosted
at the University of Louisville. The two-day event boasted 2,600 athletes
from eight states and 101 National Elite standard performances, most notably,
the fastest high school mile U.S. competition. Having a significant
number of CAL athletes qualify shows the great climate of the current
Centurion Track program.
Callie Donaldson quenched the thirst for the steeplechase competition
with a 16th place performance of 8:40.93. Austin Shaper
flowed like a river to 21st (7:39.57) and 34th place (8:06.74) finishes
respectively.
Conner Cloyd broke his own
school record, breezing into 11th
with a time of 1:59.25 in the 800. This placed him sixth among Kentucky
runners. Hannah Herd represented CAL with a 5:31.01 mile--
that’s fast, folks! Herd followed that up, finishing 24th in the 800 with a
career best 2:28.56. Popovich took 20th in the discus with 87’2” and
24th in the shot with 30’1/2”. Sipe took 10th in the long jump, tying the
top Kentucky mark of 8’6” and then placed 37th in the 300 hurdles with
53.75.
Placing eighth in a competition this huge requires the perfect storm
play basketball at Transylvania University next year.
He has a passion that you don’t see in others. He is one of
those guys who just loves the game. He gives 1,000 percent.
We are anxious to see him play at the next level,” said Logan’s
“Logan is a great individual. I would not have wanted to make the
transition to CAL together with anyone else,” said CAL boys’ head
basketball coach, Casey Smallwood, who came to CAL Wade’s
junior year. “His hard work is what drives his success.”
BUSY WEEK FOR JV SOFTBALL
CAL started off the week hosting Oldham County April 22 nd . The Lady Colonels led
early after scoring two runs in the second inning and three runs in the third, but in the
bottom of the 4th, CAL scored 3 runs on hits by Abby Mattingly and Sarah Ratterman,
followed by a Bailey Tipmore double. Solid pitching, defense and another hit by Ratterman
in the bottom of the 5 th were not enough to overcome the deficit. Final score 6-3
OCHS.
The next day, CAL faced Ballard.
CAL played great defense the first three innings, including three strikeouts in the
first seven batters by Sarah Ratterman and a big catch in the outfield by Alivia
Sinnott, holding Ballard scoreless in the 2 nd after a leadoff triple. In CAL’s first
three innings at the plate, hits by
Lydia Clay and Kayla Chapman
and doubles by Jessica Powell and
Ratterman were left stranded. The
game was tied at zero through
three innings. The Bruins scored
5 in the top of the 4 th inning, and CAL was unable to recover despite a 4 th inning
hit by Leah Jessee. Final score 5-0 Ballard.
Thursday CAL traveled to Eastern. CAL was down 7-0 after the first inning after
several hits, walks, and errors. Hits by Sarah Ratterman, Hannah Howes, Abby
Mattingly, Alivia Sinnott, and Loren Simpson, and doubles by Howes and Brittany
Mumford, were not enough as CAL fell 11-4.
CAL 17 MALE 1
The girls JV team continued their winning ways by earning another victory against Male. The transition defense rarely allowed even
a shot upon the goalie as the bulldogs were held to one goal.
Laura Cornett, Allison Edlin and Caroline Anderson led the scoring while Dana Joss, Melissa Nettles, Maddie Reed and Ashley
CAL MIDDLE SCHOOL VARSITY BASEBALL WINS BIG AT JTOWN!!
The CAL Middle School baseball team broke loose with two big wins at Jeffersontown
Skyview Park on Saturday, April 27, defeating Conway, 18-3, and
Meyzeek, 21-8.
In the morning opener, CAL scored seven times in the top of the first inning
and never looked back en route to the 18-3 win over Conway. The Centurions
collected seven hits and took advantage of 12 Conway walks and four hit batsman
to score at least five runs in every inning.
Ben Huls, Cole Taylor, Evan Boggs, and Jordan Walp all reached base in every at
bat by hit or walk for the Centurions. Boggs and Walp both had two hits and three
runs batted in to go along with a walk. Huls, Taylor, and Nick Weaver all singled
for the Centurions with Huls walking
three times and stealing five bases.
Taylor and Walp both scored three
runs. Every batter for the Centurions
scored at least one run in the game.
Luke Price pitched for CAL, going the distance and allowing two hits while
striking out five.
In the second game of the day,
CAL banged out 16 hits in only
three innings and added 12 free passes from Meyzeek to score 21 runs in the 21
-8 victory. The 21 runs and 16 hits were CAL’s high marks of the year. CAL
Also contributing to the attack for the Centurions were Steven Ott, who had two hits
and three runs batted in, Cole Taylor and Jordan Walp both had doubles and Sean
McElwain and Evan Boggs both singled. Deon Reese executed a perfect squeeze bunt
in the third inning to score a CAL run.
Cole Taylor was the winning pitcher for the Centurions, going the distance and striking
out five.
On Thursday, April 25, the Centurions fell short in losing to JCTMS, 5-2. Sean
McElwain had two hits and a superb diving catch of a line drive in right field for the
Centurions on this day. Ben Huls had a double, and Luke Price, Nick Weaver, Grant
Harmon, and Cameron Marshall all singled.
Cole Taylor, Luke Price, and Grant Harmon all pitched for the Centurions, and teamed to
allow only five JCTMS hits in seven innings but a couple of ill-timed errors allowed
JCTMS to score the needed runs to win.
On Tuesday, April 23, five CAL first inning errors led to a five-run Crosby first inning, a
lead the Centurions could not overcome, in falling, 10-7. CAL fought back with six runs
in the final two innings and left the bases loaded in the final two innings of the game.
Cole Taylor had two hits for the Centurions and Ben Huls doubled. Nick Weaver, Steven Ott, and John Harvie all singled for the
Centurions with Huls, Weaver, and Luke Price (two walks) scoring two runs each. Luke Price and Cole Taylor pitched for the Centurions.
News from the Underground
"The Pride and Tradition of the Centurion Foundry will be entrusted to the Courageous, Committed and Strong”
Several years ago our first Strength and Conditioning Coach came up with the name Centurion Foundry. By Definition a foundry is
a place in which metal castings are produced. This along with Proverbs 27:17 – “As iron sharpens iron, one man sharpens another”,
became the foundations for our program.
This past week I read an article about college athletes and the fact that when student athletes graduate they are better in relationships,
healthier and better prepared to enter the workforce than other college graduates. I believe this can also be said about High
School Athletes. A student athlete has to be focused, disciplined and committed to the goals of the team. We are blessed at Christian
Academy of Louisville to have a school that puts Christ at the center of everything we do. Our academics are second to none and
our Athletic programs are dedicated to making every athlete a disciple. Our students leave CAL ready to face the challenges they
will run into in the next phase of their life.
We keep all this in mind when we design our Sports Performance Program. We want to be the foundry for our sports programs. We
strive to not only build a bigger, faster and stronger athlete but also build a more focused, disciplined and committed team mate. As
we enter the last month of the academic year, I hope all our athletes take some time to set goals for this summer and dedicate a few
hours a week to prepare themselves for next year. Sports Performance is not a program that ends at the end of the school year. Actually
the summer is our most important training cycle. We must make a commitment to using our summer to build a solid strength
foundation and building our teams’ character, tradition and excellence.
The Middle School Boys Soccer teams have been extremely busy in the last few
weeks. They have played regularly scheduled games and some make up games
to give those tons of time on the field.
After disappointing losses from both teams to North Oldham, each team came
back with a vengeance against Bondurant, the #1 seed in the league.
CAL VS. BONDURANT
Varsity came out to the Bondurant with their offense loaded. Multiple shots
from Christian Kornegay and Kihun Choi started the ball rolling! Tyler Green
had a great pass to Alazar Barsamian which he sunk easily for a score of 1-0.
The Varsity defense lead by Jordan Fisher, Wes Wegert and Justin
Cole, kept the ball on the CAL side of the field for the rest of the game.
Alazar Barsamian scored again on a penalty kick in the last 5 minutes
of the game to result in a 2-0 win for the Centurions.
Junior Varsity also came out to win against Bondurant. Defense led by
Clay Wolfe and Matthew Noltemeyer, kept the offense hopping. Nathan
Green scored the first goal of the game and goals continued to fall
by Andrew Warren and Jacob Spainhour. The mid-field stood tough
throughout the game with great plays by Danny McElwain and Dawson
Hatfield. At the top of the 2 nd half, Bondurant came back with a couple
of goals themselves for a score of 3-2 which only spurred the Centurions
to continue to fight hard. A
goal by Nathan Shepherd and another
by Hunter Hale had the JV team’s confidence soaring. Nathan Green scored the last goal
of the game with a fabulous win of 6-2!
CAL VS. SHELBY EAST MIDDLE
Varsity had so much support from the defensive and mid-field positions against East Middle, it
was clear early on a win was to be had. Nathan Shepherd came all the way across the field to
score the first goal. And they kept coming from that point forward! Ezra Sanford had a corner
kick that was positioned perfectly for a header by Tyler Green for a 2-0 lead. Tyler Green
scored again to bring the lead to 3-0 in the 12 th minute of the first half. The combination of
Sawyer Skarski and Trae Rick was instrumental in keeping the ball on the offensive side of the
field. Beomseon Do scored quickly again for a 4-0 lead. At the end of the first half another
Centurion goal by Kihun Choi made it 5-0. With a ton of activity in the 2 nd half, CAL continued to make offense plays to add to
the scoreboard. Goals by Kihun Choi, Beomseon Do and K.C. Purvis secured the win 8-1!
J.V. struggled a little against the East Middle Missiles.
East had a 0-3 lead at the half even with
superior play from Connor Bates and Danny
McElwain. CAL continued to fight hard but just
couldn’t get points on the board until the 6 th minute
in the 2 nd half. Jackson Pass and Evan Athanasakes
gave great efforts to work to get CAL
some momentum going, but CAL just came up
short. It was a terrific effort CAL!
“B” TEAM GAME:
Following in the shadow of the "A" team victory, the "B" team started
strong in their own game against the Crusaders. Cross Wolfe scored the
first goal after a contentious 8.5 minutes in the first quarter. The
Crusaders put on a strong defense but our boys showed their fighting
spirit and took their game to a new level! Jackson Donovan came back
quickly spinning and avoiding being blocked to score goal #2 with
seconds left in the first quarter, closing that quarter at 2:0 - CAL.
In the first minute and a half of the second quarter Jackson D tossed
to Liam Scull, who looked for a good position and took a solid throw
to the net for goal #3. Jackson Donovan then took 4 valiant throws at
the goal, but it was Seth Crutchfield who finally made goal #4 after
relentless defense pressure from the Crusaders. Cross Wolfe tried for
another goal but caught the post. Meanwhile the defense waited. Back
to offense, Dakota Lanham grabbed the ball, ran in and was hit by
multiple players but held on to the ball and made the shot under
incredible pressure as he fell from a shove, and made goal #5, ending
the half at 5:0 - CAL.
After the half, the defense got a little action, and defended the
goal, sending the action back to the offense at the other end of the
field. Garrett Goldman caught his chance behind the goal and swung
around the corner to the front of the goal and shot for goal #6. Ten
seconds later Parker Jones assisted Seth Crutchfield for goal #7.
Meanwhile the defense rested. Jared Densler ran with the ball, looking
for a pass when he saw an opening and took the shot straight in for
goal #8. After CAL took the ball, Jared Densler threw in from a good
distance for his 2nd straight shot bringing the score to 9:0 - CAL.
The mom's on the bleacher caught a glimpse of Andrew Barbour looking
very relaxed, resting against a pole with legs crossed, as the defense
continued to rest!
During the last quarter Garrett Goldman spun and fought his way to
make #10. Donna Goldman pulled in to the parking lot with 8:19
left in the game. Dakota Lanham fought through a pack of Crusaders to
push for goal #11. Donna finally made it through the gate with 4:04
left in the game. She distracted the spectators and we missed goals 12
and 13!
David Naiser took a turn on offense and tried a shot at the goal but
the shot was successfully blocked. He got another try, carrying the
ball down the middle of the field only to have it smacked from his net
just feet from the goal with only seconds to go. The whistle then
blew, and CAL scored another victory, crushing the Crusaders 13:0!
We're looking forward to their next game!
