Science Education Programs “The depth and breadth of our science education programs position us as a national leader in science education, poised to collaborate with our customers to carry out the intent of the 2007 America COMPETES Act. Together, we will continue to strengthen the global competitiveness of the United States by stimulating interest in math, science, and technology at all academic levels, helping to prepare students, recent graduates, and others to be tomorrow’s scientific workforce.” Wayne Stevenson, Vice President and Director of Science Education Programs Our nation needs a steady supply of scientists and engineers to meet future needs in critical science and technology areas. Students in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology fields need the skills, knowledge, and experience to stay competitive in an ever-changing global marketplace. America COMPETES Sets the Agenda for the Future of Science Education In August 2007, our nation took a significant step toward strengthening and securing America’s science and technology enterprise with the passage of the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education, and Science (America COMPETES) Act. America COMPETES sets the agenda for growth and improvements to science and math education. This, combined with an equally strong commitment to research, supports the ultimate goal of ensuring the global competitiveness of the United States. After the bill was signed, ORAU President Ron Townsend joined a distinguished panel at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) to spread the word on the importance of the new initiatives. “One of the reasons ORAU is so excited about America COMPETES is because we know it will work,” Townsend said. “We are currently doing many of the science education programs envisioned by the act, and the model we have used for these programs in Oak Ridge and East Tennessee can be expanded and duplicated under the America COMPETES Act.” Also attending the ORNL event was the chief architect of the Act, U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), joined by Rep. Zach Wamp (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Bart Gordon (D-Tenn.). All tout the bill as the answer to preserving America’s leadership role in science and technology by expanding research and education programs across the country. Image Information Pictured left to right, Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander along with Congressmen Zach Wamp and Bart Gordon joined a panel discussion at ORNL alongside Oak Ridge High School educator Benita Albert, University of Tennessee Vice President for Research David Millhorn, and ORAU President Ron Townsend to discuss the importance of the America COMPETES Act as an investment in our nation’s scientific leaders. “The United States can keep its competitive edge and create good jobs by improving science and math education, increasing our support of scientific research, and reducing our dependence on foreign energy sources,” stated Alexander. With authorized funding of more than $43 billion through fiscal year 2010, federal organizations such as the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Office of Science—the largest supporter of the physical sciences and ORAU’s funding office for the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE)—will be on track to double its size over the next seven years. The provisions of the act outline several initiatives for DOE, all of which build on current efforts to foster science and math research, education, and collaboration and include: • Early career grant programs for young investigators working at both universities and national labs to establish their research careers in areas critical to the mission of DOE. • A graduate research fellowship program for outstanding students in DOE mission-critical fields. The conference agreement also defines specific science education initiatives for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and the Department of Education. 21
