ORISE at a Glance The Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) institute, which is managed by Oak Ridge Associated Universities (ORAU). ORISE addresses national needs in assessing and analyzing environmental and health effects of radiation, beryllium, and other hazardous materials; developing and operating medical and national security radiation emergency management and response capabilities; and managing education programs to help ensure a robust supply of scientists, engineers, and technicians to meet future science and technology needs. ORISE creates opportunities for collaboration through partnerships with other DOE facilities, federal agencies, academia, and industry in a manner consistent with DOE objectives and the ORISE mission. Key Key Accomplishments Accomplishments: • Placed more than 5,000 participants from almost 900 colleges and universities in more than 150 science education and research programs, including appointments at 135 federal research facilities • Opened the Cytogenetic Biodosimetry Laboratory as a national response resource for calculating the radiation dose of those accidentally exposed to ionizing radiation • Provided continuing hands-on medical education to more than 1,100 pre-hospital emergency response personnel, emergency planners, and public health personnel worldwide on handling the medical aspects of radiation emergencies • Renewed a five-year, $5.8 million agreement with the NRC to continue to serve as the sole-source, independent contractor to address regulatory activities related to the decommissioning of previously contaminated reactor and materials sites • Published for DOE’s worker Illness and Injury Surveillance Program the Worker Health Summary,1995–2004, and a companion summary version, Worker Health at a Glance, 1994–2004, a 9-year health summary of 120,000+ workers from 14 DOE sites • Developed and distributed to emergency rooms and public health departments nationwide more than 700 tool kits on how to prepare for radiological and nuclear terrorism • Planned and coordinated DOE’s role and served as part of DOE’s response team in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Top Officials 4 Full- Scale Exercise, which tested our nation’s ability to respond to three almost simultaneous attacks involving radiological weapons of mass destruction • Coordinated 48 scientific peer reviews of 1,906 research proposals involving 1,398 reviewers with potential funding of awards totaling more than $748 million Contact Information: Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education c/o Oak Ridge Associated Universities P.O.
