HIGHLIGHTS Diabetes and cardiovascular disease are health conditions facing today’s minority population. ORISE, with churches and faith-based organizations, is working to reduce or eliminate this trend through information and education. Pictured above, Martha (Marti) Szczur (left), associate deputy director of the National Library of Medicine’s (NLM) Specialized Information Services Division, and ORISE’s Rose Foster cut a ceremonial ribbon to launch ORISE’s Consumer Health Resource Information Service (CHRIS) program throughout Tennessee, with a total of 21 houses of worship participating in the curriculum. CHRIS is a faith-based initiative designed to support the DHHS’ “Healthy People 2010” goals of increasing quality and years of life and eliminating health disparities. Developed by ORISE with funding from NLM, the program is based on the concept that faith-based organizations can play an effective role in eliminating or reducing health disparities because of their unique positions in the community. We help our customers receive public health information and training in an interesting and interactive fashion, such as the simulated learning environment shown above. ORISE uses the Web to provide cost-effective, efficient solutions that are national in scope. For the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Office of Education and Special Initiatives, ORISE developed CancerSPACE (Cancer: Simulated Planned Approach to the Collaborative Experience), an interactive learning tool that uses cancer clinics’ spirit of collaboration in sharing experience and knowledge to increase rates of cancer screening, especially among underserved populations. The CancerSPACE tool will enable cancer clinic staff to contribute ideas that will become new learning experiences. While nanotechnology promises to build novel materials and devices, such as the “nanowire sandwich” pictured above, there is an increasing need to promote nanotechnology safety and health. With this in mind, a new Web site—the Nanotechnology Safety and Health Repository Web Site at http://orise.orau.gov/ihos/ Nanotechnology/nanotech_home.html—was created in <strong>2006</strong> for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) community. The Industrial Hygiene/Occupational Safety Special Interest Group (IH/OS SIG), managed by ORISE, collects and distributes to the DOE community safety and health information related to nanotechnology activities. With input from DOE and other parties, information is collected and posted on the IH/OS SIG’s newly created site. The site aims to be user friendly, contains current information from credible sources, and reflects input from knowledgeable professionals and potential users.
