Hepatic fatty change is a well-documented risk factor <strong>in</strong> reperfusion<br />
<strong>in</strong>jury (1). Ischemic precondition<strong>in</strong>g (PC) appears as an effective<br />
strategy to attenuate the damage due to ischemia <strong>and</strong> reperfusion<br />
(2, 3). The aim <strong>of</strong> the present study was to evaluate wether<br />
PC could be effective <strong>in</strong> an <strong>in</strong> vivo rat model <strong>of</strong> liver steatosis <strong>in</strong>duced<br />
by a chol<strong>in</strong>e deficient diet. After a warm cycle <strong>of</strong> 60 m<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />
lobar selective ischemia followed by 30 m<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> reperfusion, a consistent<br />
appearance <strong>of</strong> necrosis was reproduced <strong>in</strong> both normal <strong>and</strong><br />
fatty livers. Steatosis <strong>in</strong>creased the post-ischemic H 2 O 2 concentration,<br />
as well as the formation <strong>of</strong> HNE-prote<strong>in</strong> adducts. PC was<br />
found to control both <strong>in</strong> normal <strong>and</strong> fatty livers one <strong>of</strong> the mechanisms<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> the reperfusion <strong>in</strong>jury, i.e. oxidative stress <strong>and</strong><br />
lipid peroxidation. The marked quench<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> oxidant generation<br />
<strong>and</strong> oxidative reactions seem to be one <strong>of</strong> the pathways by which<br />
PC reduces the reperfusion <strong>in</strong>jury <strong>and</strong> cell death.<br />
