SUMMARY<br />

Drives bus to transport students over specified routes to local or distant points according to time schedule<br />

by performing the following duties.<br />

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be<br />

assigned.<br />

• Prepares documentation (i.e. incident/accident reports, inspections, disciplinary and positive<br />

behavior reports, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying information.<br />

• Assesses incidents, accidents and/or potential emergency situations for the purpose of resolving or<br />

recommending to the Transportation Director and/or Administration a resolution for the situation.<br />

• Operates radio or similar device in safe manner to communicate only with base station or other<br />

buses to report disruption of service.<br />

• Fuels assigned bus (e.g. oil, fuel, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining vehicle in a safe operating<br />

condition.<br />

• Inspects and cleans assigned bus, both interior and exterior (i.e. cleaning floors, cleaning windows<br />

(as needed), cleaning seats, etc.) for ensuring safety, appearance, and sanitation.<br />

• Assists students in seating, (may assist students with special equipment, lifts or other assistive<br />

devices) for the purpose of providing safe loading and unloading from buses including both<br />

emergency situations and normal transport.<br />

• Keeps records of pre-trips.<br />

• Provides the Transportation Director with student incident documentation.<br />

• Inspects bus according to state law. Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspections (e.g. brake systems,<br />

gauges, emergency exits, fluid levels, tire pressure, exterior condition, etc.) for the purpose of<br />

ensuring the safe operating condition of the vehicle and meeting state requirements.<br />

• Complies with traffic regulations.<br />

• Submits to a Commercial <strong>Driver</strong>’s License physical, per the guidelines set forth by the Minnesota<br />

Department of Motor Vehicles Services.<br />

• Reports all driving violations to employer, promptly - including violations that occur outside of<br />

work time.<br />

• Attends meetings and/or trainings for the purpose of maintaining skills and meeting requirements<br />

of school bus driver certificate.<br />

• Performs first aid, as necessary, for the purpose of meeting the immediate health care needs of<br />

passengers.<br />

• Maintains order and enforces school safety rules.<br />

QUALIFICATIONS<br />

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.<br />

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE<br />

Must be 21 years old and have a high school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three<br />

months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.<br />

Knowledge of Minnesota commercial driving laws. Basic knowledge of auto mechanics to perform pretrip<br />

inspections. Pass a pre-employment drug test, physical examination and pre-employment<br />

background check. First aid, CPR and Blood Borne Pathogen training preferred. This position also<br />

requires the employee to participate in random drug and alcohol testing pools.<br />

LANGUAGE SKILLS<br />

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write<br />

simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group<br />

situations to students, parents, or other employees of the organization. Good interpersonal skills allowing<br />

the employee to interact positively with both adults and children. The ability to maintain confidentiality<br />

regarding students and/or passengers.<br />

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS<br />

Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10's and 100's. Ability to<br />

perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.<br />

REASONING ABILITY<br />

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral<br />

instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.<br />

Ability to effectively communicate to a group of students.<br />

LICENSES<br />

Commercial driver license from the state of Minnesota, with a school bus endorsement. Pass required<br />

initial and follow-up physicals, drug and alcohol screens, driving record standards, and criminal<br />

background investigations.<br />

PHYSICAL DEMANDS<br />

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to<br />

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger,<br />

and/or move up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance<br />

vision, and peripheral vision.<br />
