Designed to give students direct experience in observing and recording children’s<br />
behaviors in a preschool or equivalent early childhood setting. Participating<br />
and working directly with young children in a preschool classroom or equivalent<br />
setting is required. Laboratory experience will be <strong>complete</strong>d at one of <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Palomar</strong> <strong>College</strong> Child Development Centers on campus or with a department<br />
approved California Mentor Teacher.<br />
CHDV 105B Observation, Assessment, and Participation Lab -<br />

Prerequisite: A minimum grade of ‘C’ in CHDV 105, or concurrent enrollment in<br />

directly with infants and/or toddlers in a classroom is required. Laboratory<br />

CHDV 106 Infant and Toddler Care and Curriculum (3)<br />

A survey of program and activity planning for infants and toddlers (birth to 36<br />
months) in child care programs, emphasizing <strong>the</strong> role of <strong>the</strong> environment on<br />
behavior, attachment, and development. Strategies for working with parents, observation<br />
and assessment skills and <strong>the</strong> need for professional development will<br />
be explored. Concepts of effective practice for infant and toddler care with an<br />
emphasis on communication, cultural differences, problem-solving, and providing<br />
an appropriate and nurturing environment for children of all ability levels.<br />
CHDV 108 Developmentally Appropriate Principles<br />
and Practices (1)<br />

This course is designed to introduce Developmentally Appropriate Practices and<br />
Early Learning Standards. A focus will be placed on current best practices in curriculum<br />
activities, methods, and materials appropriate for planning a program for<br />
young children. Techniques for incorporating Early Learning Standards into Developmentally<br />
Appropriate curriculum will be explored.<br />
CHDV 110 Introduction to Special Education (3)<br />

Provides an overview of special education in <strong>the</strong> United States, including <strong>the</strong><br />
historical antecedents, legislation, and disability categories covered by IDEA. Discussion<br />
of societal, family, and classroom issues relevant to children with special<br />
needs. Focus on fostering understanding and respect for people with differences,<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir families, and <strong>the</strong> professionals that serve <strong>the</strong>m.<br />
CHDV 112 Early Intervention and Inclusion (3)<br />

This course focuses on <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ories, research, and practical applications of special<br />
education in an early childhood setting, specifically with children from birth to<br />
age 8. Topics covered will include curriculum modification and accommodation<br />
strategies to facilitate <strong>the</strong> development of cognitive, motor, social, emotional, and<br />
language skills in infants, toddlers, and young children with disabilities. Specific<br />
emphasis will be placed on developing classroom and behavior management plans,<br />
collaborative teaching strategies, understanding <strong>the</strong> IFSP and IEP process as it relates<br />
to early childlhood, and methods for working with professionals in <strong>the</strong> field<br />
as well as <strong>the</strong> families of children with special needs.<br />
CHDV 115 Child, Family, and Community (3)<br />
3 hours lecture<br />

The study of <strong>the</strong> child in relation to <strong>the</strong> family, school, and community; family relationships;<br />
factors affecting parental attitudes; and values of individuals and families.<br />
Focus on understanding <strong>the</strong> holistic approach to child development, including<br />
<strong>the</strong>ory and practice.<br />
CHDV 120 Children’s Health, Safety, and Nutrition (3)<br />
3 hours lecture<br />
Transfer acceptability: CSU<br />
Physical, psychosocial, and mental health including preventative and treatment<br />
measures. Emphasis is placed on development of understanding and practices<br />
of preventative health systems including sanitary food handling, child nutrition,<br />
child abuse, and emergency preparedness and evacuation. Health assessments<br />
and <strong>the</strong> changing of health behaviors are stressed. Students will create, assess and<br />
monitor safe indoor and outdoor environments for children. Focus is on children<br />
birth to age 8.<br />
CHDV 121 Pediatric CPR and First Aid (.5)<br />
½ hour lecture<br />
Note: May be taken 4 times, Pass/No Pass grading only<br />

Prepares childcare workers, parents, and o<strong>the</strong>r adults working with children for<br />
skills and knowledge required for pediatric first aid and CPR.<br />
CHDV 125 Art in Early Childhood (3)<br />

Methods and processes for developing creativity through art for young children.<br />
Students will plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally appropriate art and<br />
creative experiences for young children and apply <strong>the</strong>oretical concepts in a variety<br />
of ways. Materials used in art will be explored. An emphasis will be placed on<br />
<strong>the</strong> developmental and experiential approaches and techniques.<br />
CHDV 130 Math and Science in Early Childhood (3)<br />
3 hours lecture<br />

Students will examine math and science concepts for young children, infants<br />
through eight years. Students will plan, implement, and evaluate developmentally<br />
appropriate math and science experiences for young children and apply <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />
concepts using various methods. An emphasis is placed on developmental and<br />
experiential methods.<br />
CHDV 135 Music and Creative Movement in Early Childhood (3)<br />
3 hours lecture<br />

Developing creative experiences through music and movement activities. Songs,<br />
movement, and instrument experiences will be presented. Appropriate lesson<br />
plans and techniques will be developed.<br />
CHDV 140 Children’s Literature and Language Development (3)<br />
3 hours lecture<br />
Transfer acceptability: CSU<br />
Survey of historic and contemporary children’s literature. A critical look at children’s<br />
books and <strong>the</strong> process of choosing age appropriate books for children,<br />
infancy through adolescence. Overview of typical language development and<br />
literacy development from birth through early childhood, including <strong>the</strong>oretical<br />
approaches and developmental issues, as well as techniques for appropriately incorporating<br />
literacy into <strong>the</strong> classroom.<br />
