It's not a vacation. it's an
experience. I had been wanting to
visit Eastern Europe since the
beginning of the thaw in the cold
war. It was interesting to be to
see the changes from the old
centrally planned autocratic system
to the beginnings of a limited free
enterprise economy.
Originally I had planned on a
trip to Yugoslavia, Romania.
Bulgaria and Turkey. but the Gulf
was put a damper on that plan. Then
I began looking at East Germany •
Poland and the U.S.S.R. East
Germany was quickly becoming
absorbed into the west. Poland was
in the start of the process and
Russia was years away from throwing
off the old Communist system (or so
I thought).
Our tour started in London in
early August. We crossed the North
Sea to Holland and then started the
formal bus tour across the
continent. Major pOints were in
Berlin where we saw the former East
German border check points and the
remnants of the ·wall." Next stops
Warsaw. Poland; Brest. U.S.S.R.;
Minsk. Smolensk and at the half way
point Moscow. At the U.S.S.R.
border we picked up our Intourist
guide. She was specially assigned
