Special Olympics<br />
The Special Olympics San Diego<br />
Greater Garnes will be held on June 3<br />
and 4 at San Diego State University.<br />
The Greater Garnes is a multisport event<br />
which draws participants from a wide<br />
area of the Southwestern United States<br />
and Mexico.<br />
Sports include basketball, softball,<br />
bowling, track, and others. ARES provides<br />
communications from the "nerve<br />
center" to the various events.<br />
Communications usually concern logistics,<br />
but our most important role is<br />
being available in case of a medical<br />
emergency.<br />
ARES provides communications on<br />
Saturday, June 3. Communications on<br />
Sunday are provided by the <strong>Amateur</strong><br />
Rdio <strong>Club</strong> ofEI Cajon.<br />
(we understand thnt the next Iron Man will be<br />

Ham Plates (again)<br />
I had an occasion a couple of weeks<br />
ago regarding my ham license plates.<br />
The lady accepting calls for PD, said<br />
she couldn't find it. When I told her it<br />
was a ham license plate, she did find it,<br />
and said the ham license plates were<br />

Laser Communication<br />

Chuck & I have been playing around<br />
with over the air optical communications.<br />
We have been running LED transmitters<br />
for voice over a path of 2.2 miles with<br />
full quieting & will be graduating to<br />
Laser pointer pens soon.<br />
The additional delivered power from<br />
the laser pointer is many lOs of dB<br />
stronger due to the relatively small<br />
spreading (divergence) of the signal at<br />
long distances.<br />
On a clear enough day, the laser<br />
setup should be capable of working any<br />
line of site path. The real problem is<br />
pointing & I have put together a good<br />
tripod with pan/tilt, rifle scope and also<br />
have micrometer adjustment of AzJEl<br />
to smoothly and slowly move the laser<br />
spot. Maybe this could even be an<br />
interesting demo or talk at one of the<br />

Show and Tell<br />
Ifyou have something of interest to<br />
club members, please bring it in for<br />
our May meeting and let NN3VCharlie,<br />
the program chairman, know what<br />
it is so that he can properly introduce<br />
you and your Show-n-Tell item when<br />
that comes up before the regular program.<br />
At present, nothing is on deck for<br />
the next meeting.<br />

Hams & Police<br />
A harn got pulled over in Elkhart<br />
county by 6 Indiana State Police squad<br />
cars and had most of his radios confiscated<br />
because they would receive p0<br />
lice calls.<br />
I think they were trying to punish<br />
him for having a light bar with red<br />
lenses on top ofhis Blazer.<br />
They gave him a ticket for that as<br />
well as the radios even though the law<br />
has an exemption for hams for the<br />

Jamming Cases<br />
The FCC caught two individuals<br />
allegedly jamming ham radio repeaters<br />
from mobile settings, and fined them<br />
$8,000 each.<br />

Heart Attacks<br />
(this is an adendum to the Heart Attack article<br />
in the April Scope which was not meant 10 be<br />
anApri/ Fooljoke like the San Clemente Island<br />
story. NN3V Chnrlie provides the following<br />
information)<br />
The Healt Care services unit at<br />
SAlC called Rochester Hospital (the<br />
place where that information supposedly<br />
originated) to verifY it's authenticity.<br />
The hospital informed us that they<br />
too were aware ofthe circulating email,<br />
had no such information available from<br />
any study or related source from the<br />
hospital (contrary to the article), and<br />
had issued formal press announcements<br />
refuting the content ofthe article and it's<br />
purported origin.<br />
As a matter offact, hospital authorities<br />
are concerned that such nonesense<br />
can cause an individual experiencing<br />
chest pains (and a possible heart attack)<br />
to dedice to "self medicate" along the<br />
lines of the article, causing extreme and<br />
potentially life threatening danger. The<br />
hospital's advice: when in doubt, CALL<br />
911 ASAP and don't fool around.<br />
Del Mar Fair<br />
The <strong>Palomar</strong> <strong>Amateur</strong> <strong>Radio</strong> <strong>Club</strong><br />
will be participating in the San Diego<br />
<strong>Amateur</strong> <strong>Radio</strong> Council station operation<br />
at the Del Mar Fair on July 3rd and<br />
4th to demonstrate amateur radio to the<br />
Fair goers.<br />
We will need two operators per shift<br />
to operate the radios and to answer<br />
questions about amateur radio: 10arn<br />
2pm, 2-6, and 6-10pm.<br />
