President’s Message
Story and photo from Armand Gastelo
Armand is the proud father of a well-decorated Boy Scout
Our horrible winter weather is almost
over. Just hang on for a few more weeks.
I actually ran out of sunscreen and lip
balm! Living in Southern California,
we need our own special type of winter
preparation kit, different than those used
by the rest of the country.
Our kits should include a shovel, not
a snow shovel, but one you can use at the
beach with the kids. You should have a
good defroster to defrost those burgers
before cooking them on the barbeque and
an ice chisel to chip ice for your iced tea.
Don’t forget a good umbrella to shade
you from all that sun and, lastly a nice
thick parka to use as a blanket while eating
your picnic lunch by the sea.
My point is that you should be
prepared no matter where you live. You
should keep emergency kits not only at
home and office, but in all of your cars.
This goes for first aid kits as well.
Did you know that many countries
in Europe require drivers to carry some
form of emergency kit or first aid kit in
their cars as well as a reflective emergency
triangle while driving?
Some Porsche cars came equipped
with first aid kits when first sold along
with the tool kit. I keep an aftermarket
first aid kit in my 993, which is nice and
compact. I also have an emergency kit
which I received while serving on the
Club’s board. This kit includes jumper
cables, which can be very handy.
Things that you might not have
thought of carrying are spare batteries
for your remote key fob and a miniature
screwdriver. You might need the
screwdriver to open the fob to access the
battery. I learned to keep these items in
my car when, while at home, my security
alarm fob’s battery died which left me
stranded.
As the days grow longer and you
become more active participating in the
club’s activities remember to replenish
your road kits.
Like a good Boy Scout one should
always be prepared.
Porsche Dreams Do Come
True
Story by Mark & Tina
Trewartha, photos from Mark
Trewartha
Growing up in Australia, the thought of
owning an expensive sports car like a
Porsche was way beyond my comprehension.
By the time I left school, all my
friends were just getting interested in Australian
muscle cars. so naturally that is what
I became interested in as well. Around the
same time I joined Qantas Airlines as an
apprentice aircraft engineer and started my
career in engineering. One of the benefits
of working for an airline is cheaper fares,
so it was on one of my trips to Los Angeles
to purchase car parts that I met my wife to
be, Tina. It was also during this visit that
my interest in Porsches began to increase,
helped by the fact that Tina had arranged a
test drive for me in a nice little Carrera.
About eight years later we had the
opportunity to move from Sydney to the
sunny shores of Hawaii. By this stage,
we were married with three children, but
the dream of owning my first Porsche
never left me. Being an engineer, I loved
all things mechanical, so over the years I
had read all the information about Porsche
that I could get hold of. There was only one
Porsche dealer in Honolulu and after about
six months I think they got sick of seeing
me every week. It was about this time that
Porsche announced that they were releasing
a new 911, code named 993. As the weeks
went by, the more I found out about this
latest 911, the more I wanted one. When we
got married, Tina had promised me that I
would have a Porsche before I was 30 and
that time was approaching fast. All I had
to do now is convince her that a 911 would
make a great family car. Yeah, Right!
One day as we were driving by the
dealership, she suggested we go in and
have a look at what was on the floor. As we
entered, my eyes were drawn to a brand new
Guards Red 993. It was exactly the color I
wanted but unfortunately it had a tan interior.
Tina surprised me when she suggested
we should order a new car just the way I
wanted it. After talking to the salesman, I
Mark & Tina with the Cayman & GT3
found out it would be a three-month wait
for the car to be delivered. It would be the
longest wait of my life. As the weeks went
by, I looked for more and more information
on the car. I read all the road tests and
was happy to find that everyone thought it
was the best Porsche yet. Finally the dealer
called to advise me the car had arrived. I
could not wait to get there to pick it up. After
all the paperwork was done, I was finally
handed the keys to my brand new Porsche
911. True to her word, I took delivery two
weeks before my 30th birthday.
When you buy a new Porsche, they
give you an application to join the Porsche
Club of America. I didn’t know anything
about the club but I thought it couldn’t hurt
to join. I found out there was a Hawaiian
region, so I made a point of going to one
of the meetings. When we showed up,
there were lots of Porsches there and we
found out about some upcoming events.
One event that interested me was their annual
Concours, which was to be held at the
Aloha Tower in downtown Honolulu. I had
always been particular about keeping my
cars clean, so I thought it might be a fun
event to enter. I entered the street division
and was pleased to find that I won my class.
The seed was planted.
After three years in Hawaii, the time
had come to move on and we were transferred
to Los Angeles. After looking around
Los Angeles and Orange County, we finally
decided to settle in Huntington beach. After
993 Turbo
transferring my membership to the Orange
Coast Region, I went to my first breakfast
meeting. When I arrived, I could not believe
how many beautiful cars were there. As
the months went by I got more and more
involved with the club and especially the
Concours series. I seemed to be quite good
at showing my little red Carrera...winning
my class multiple times.
After six years with the Carrera, it was
time to step up to the next level so I set my
sights on a 993 Turbo. I was lucky to find a
great club member who was happy to take
the car off my hands and still owns it to this
day. I spent months looking for a turbo all
over the country only to see one advertised
just down the freeway in Irvine. Tina and
I went to look at the car and when I first
saw it I could not believe how beautiful it
was. For some reason Speed Yellow looked
fantastic on the 993 Turbo. The car was four
years old but had less than 5,000 miles. I
couldn’t wait to start showing it. The street
class I was entered in was becoming quite
competitive so I knew I had to step up my
game for the coming year. There were at
least two of us who were in contention for
the Zone 8 year-end award. The lead went
back and forth all year, until the last event,
which I won and, in turn, sealed the trophy.
I was lucky enough to go on the year after
and win the overall award once again.
It is probably the dream of most
Porsche owners to visit the factory in
Zuffenhausen at least once in their lifetime.
It certainly was for me. I started to
investigate the possibility of doing a tour
of Germany in a Porsche and incorporating
a visit to the factory. At the time there only
seemed to be one company offering such
tours. On the surface they looked great but
as we dug deeper into the itinerary we found
that of the 10 days we would be there we
would only have the Porsche for 3 days and,
worst of all, you had to be chaperoned by a
tour guide on the autobahn who would limit
the speed at which you could drive the car.
8

And on the other seven days of the tour we
would be driven around by bus. This was
definitely not my idea of a Porsche driving
tour.
We decided to just fly to Germany,
rent an ordinary car and just go exploring
on our own. On arriving in Frankfurt, we
learned that the autoshow was being held at
the convention centre so we decided to go
along. On the Porsche stand, we were lucky
to meet many people from Zuffenhausen
and made quite a few important contacts.
The next day we headed towards the factory
for our tour. The first time at the factory
was quite an experience. Until you see
these cars on the production line it is hard
to imagine they are really built by hand. At
the time they didn’t have any robots at all.
To this day they still only have one robot.
The rest of the vacation was spent visiting
some fabulous areas in Germany and, of
course, some high speed trips down the
autobahn.
After arriving home, I thought it
would be fun to write an article for the
Pandemonium describing our visit to
Germany and all the fun we had. After it
was published, we had many people from
the club approach us and tell us how much
they enjoyed reading the article and how it
was something they had always wanted to
do. Well that got us thinking about utilizing
all the extensive research we had done
and contacts we had made to organize a
proper “Autobahn Adventure.” It was very
important for us from the start to make sure
we offered a truly unique experience. Tina
and I were never very fond of guided tours
where every single minute is scheduled and
you are rushing from one tourist attraction
to another, with no chance to stay longer
if you wished. As everyone’s idea of the
perfect vacation is different, we wanted to
offer a tour, which is very flexible and can
be customized to suit the individual. Most
of the days are spent at your leisure doing
whatever it is you want to do. We then meet
at the next hotel in our own private banquet
room to share a gourmet meal together
with some fine wine and German beer. It
was also imperative that the Porsche was
included for the entire time and there were
no restrictions on what speed you could
drive on the autobahn.
The first year we offered the tour we
had 16 people join us in Germany. The second
year it had grown to 24 people. When
we first started the tours, we thought we
would repeat the same route each time but
by the third tour, we had 10 people returning,
so we decided to design new routes
each year taking in other parts of Germany
and Switzerland. As the years went by, the
participation just kept growing, with many
people returning year after year. In 2007 we
had over 65 people from all over the world
join us on two back-to-back tours. Each
year we stay in some of the finest hotels in
Europe. We always include some unique
experiences like driving on the famous
Nurburgring, a tour through the Swiss Alps
or a visit to Oktoberfest. For 2009 we will
be visiting the three countries of Germany,
Austria and Switzerland. We will not only
have the new 997 Carerras available, we
have also planned a visit to the brand new
Porsche museum, which just opened to the
public, in addition to our annual factory
tour. From the pictures I have seen, it looks
spectacular. For more information on our
2009 tour, please see our website at www.
Final David & Goliath
Challenge Event Was
Held at Qualcom
Story by Steve Eguina
The final event of the 2008 David and
Goliath Challenge Series was completed
in San Diego at Qualcomm Stadium. As
you may recall OCR recognized San Diego
Region as the Zone 8 Goliath of Autocross
after their dominating results at the
2007 Porsche Parade in San Diego. After
a few cocktails at SDR’s Driver Awards
party last year, OCR admitted that we’re
just the “little” Davids of Autocross, but
offered up a challenge to Goliath, a fourevent
series based on their own Bench Racing
Index (BRI). Two events were held at
El Toro and two at Qualcom. The top five
drivers from each club at each event would
score points.
Over 15 Team David drivers showed
up this rainy morning, and we were determined
to mount our best challenge yet!
These were the crème de la crème, OCR’s
youngest, oldest (sorry-more experienced)
and, in some cases, fastest! The SDR
course was very fast and technical which
probably helped TEAM DAVID who were
used to our fast and technical courses at El
Toro. Chris Grivas – Cayman S, Pierre
Mauries - Boxster, Evan Fullerton – 914,
Steve Eguina – GT2, Radomin Delgado
– GT3 RS all scored points for Team
David. These members were backed
up by David Palmquist, Christian Van
Fleet, James Buck, Bob Nimtz, Attila
Szilagyi, Kris Scheussler, Kevin Fullerton,
Roger Ang, Randy Gates, Jerry
Griffin, Christine Newcomer and Karin
Scheussler. (Hope we didn’t forget anyone).
During the four events it was not the
same five OCR drivers who scored points
at each event. Over 15 OCR Team David
drivers helped to win the series!
Team David was 3 points in the lead going
into the final event. A total of 220 points
is available for the series.
As the sun set and the scores were tallied,
Team David won the final event by
1 point, winning the series. Team Goliath
has been weighed and measured and came
up short! A “special” award will be presented
to Team David at Team Goliath’s
Drivers Awards party where San Diego
Region will be eating a little Humble Pie.
Walter’s Automotive Group Hosted the
2008 Awards Party for Autocross
Story by Jim Harris, Photos by Lisa Goetsch and Judy Lech
The 2008 Walter’s Porsche
Autocross Series came to
a close with the year-end
Awards Party, hosted by
Walter’s at their new facility
in Riverside, California.
The event included food,
refreshments and service
bays full of fine street and
race cars. The cars included
OCR members’ cars and new
Porsches, Audi R8s and Mercedes
Benz. Approximately
100 drivers, friends and family
showed up for our annual event to
honor those that drove their cars in the
Autocross over the year.
After relaxing with friends and
families and enjoying the drinks and
hors d’oeuvres provided by Walter’s, the
group was welcomed to the party by the
2008 Autocross Co-chair Jim Harris.
Following the welcoming remarks,
the group was treated to a presentation
by James Sofronas, President of GMG,
describing his recent experiences driving
in the 24 Hours of Daytona. The
presentation was interesting and educational.
GMG provides upgrades and
servicing for late model Porsches and is
a Series Sponsor for our Autocross.
Bob Scheussler next presented
jackets to Walter Kienle the founder of
Walter’s; his son, Steve, Walter’s General
Manager; and seven of Walter’s key
staff in appreciation of their generous
support and participation throughout
the year. Also receiving his jacket during
the Champion presentation was Ed
McRae, class winner and Director of
Operations for Walter’s. Ed then offered
words of encouragement and praise for
the Autocross program.
Event Sponsor awards were presented
including Mark and Laura Hergesheimer
but much appreciated include
is highly valued.
A special annual recognition,
the inaugural
Sportsmanship Award,
was presented to James Buck for his
unselfish response to a breakdown of
another driver’s car (in James’ class).
James gave his car to the other driver,
event and register a finish.
OCR Celebrated the Holiday Season
Story by Garey Cooper, photos by everyone at the party
After several years at the Phoenix Club in
Anaheim, our Region’s end-of-year party
was held at the Wyndham Hotel in Fullerton.
It was a wonderful evening and we
were treated very well as the club had two
separate rooms with plenty of dancing space
(which, as luck would have it, was located
right next to the bar) and an area for the
silent auction.
Knowing that the bar would certainly
attract the club members, this area was also
used as the display location for our silent
auction items. Even though the auction was
silent it didn’t stop any of the OCR crew
from talking and laughing as they figured
out how to outfox the next bidder for that
unique Porsche tschochke that they had
always wanted.
For the auction we had impressive
choices that had been donated by our esteemed
sponsors and members. Walter’s
Automotive Group, Carlab Development,
Autowerkes, and Newport Auto Center
were among the doners. These items were
donated free of charge to our club with the
entire proceeds going to our adopted charity:
the Orangewood Home for Children.
This year’s party was organized by
our Vice President, Nicole Cooper-Boggs
(assisted by her husband, Cooper). Also
helping were Jerry and Melody Muno,
Tom and Phyllis Meng, David Miranda,
and Grace Fredrickson. There were other
helpers as well and our thanks go to all of
them for creating such a memorable setting
for our annual bash.
The dancing was excellent with music
provided by Jose Beltran of WPS Entertainment.
I was hoping to be spotted for a
potential spot on “Dancing with the Stars”
but unfortunately there is no category for
people with two left feet. With 125 people
in attendance the joint was rocking and
rolling.
There were special recognitions at
the party for our enthusiasts of the year
and OCR President Armand Gastelo was
happy to announce Buzzy Klevens and
Kari Knudson as the recipients of this
honor for 2008. The Prez also mentioned
C.L. Jarusek and Gary “Scoop” Barnhill
for their contributions to the club in 2008.
During his presentation Armand reminded
the attendees of the all the fun provided by
the Autocross crew and how singular our
White Gloves Concours was for everyone.
In addition, Armand specifically thanked
our Porsche auto dealerships for their
strong support of the Orange Coast Region;
Newport Auto Center, Circle Motors, and
Walter’s Porsche received all received a
round of applause.
This year the emphasis was on food,
fun, and dancing so our announcements
were kept to a minimum. Even with that
being the plan, the evening seemed to fly
by with stories told about someone’s special
memory, or that fast lap at El Toro going on
in all corners. We even had an announced
engagement during the evening: Jonathan
Gerber and his beautiful fiancé, Cari Scherr,
told us all that they are to be married in
September 2009.
20

Our very special guest host Santa
Claus arrived just in time to hand out the
winning Silent Auction bidders their goodies.
To me Santa looked an awful lot like
past OCR President Frank Goodyear but
I can’t be sure, although I noticed that he
drove an identical car!
There will be no lack of incriminating
evidence as Gloria Moore had provided
each table with a disposable camera to
document the evening’s misadventures. I
hope that someone took a photo of David
Miranda as he looked uber-sharp in sport
coat and tie; it would be a shame to have
missed him all decked out. In fact I noticed
several of our car club members looked
significantly better than they do at our typical
Porsche weekend events. It just goes to
show you what a bar of soap and a trip to
Macy’s will do.
The Orange Coast Region 2008 Holiday
Ball was one for the ages. You should
be ashamed for missing it and already planning
on attending the next one at the end of
this year. Don’t worry about stretching the
truth about your fastest Autocross speed, or
your shiny Concours trophy finish, or even
that “ace” result in the rallye, everyone has
too much fun to fact check.
32 Hours, 7 Minutes
Story and photos from C.L. Jarusek
On December 10, our fellow PCA/
OCR members, Paul and Ed Kramer of
AutoKennel, hosted about 100 of us
car nuts to see a presentation by Alex
Roy of Team Polizei. The event,
besides being a fundraiser for the
PCA/OCR charity Orangewood
Children’s Home, was a preview of
a movie 32 Hours, 7 Minutes. The
title of the movie refers to the old
record for driving from New York
City to Los Angeles.
A few minutes after the group
assembled at AutoKennel, the 2000
BMW M5, was driven by Alex Roy
into the back of the business and
we all looked it over as the “tons”
of pizzas and the keg of Samuel Adams,
which the Kramers provided, was
consumed by us waiting to hear of the
adventure. After everyone filled their
bellies we sat down in our folding chairs
and saw a PowerPoint presentation with
the details of the trip.
Alex started by a review of the
start of racing to get across the U.S.
with Erwin George Cannonball Baker
making the coast-to-coast trip in a
Graham-Paige model 57 Blue Streak
8, averaging greater than 50 mph, setting
a 53 hour, 30 minute record that
stood for nearly 40 years. In 1971 the
“Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining
–Sea Memorial Trophy Dash” was
first run and subsequent ones were held
annually until 1979. Racers included
Orange County’s own Dan Gurney, who
won in November 1971 with a Ferrari
Daytona at an average of about 80 mph.
The Cannonball races were halted, and
outlaw successors continued similar
races in the U.S., Europe and Australia.
Alex Roy has also participated
in the European Cannonball events
(more info to follow). The “Cannonball”
was succeeded in the U.S.
by the U.S. Express, in which the
fastest time recorded
was 32,
7 minutes in
1983. This was
the record that
Team Polizei,
was attempting
to break.
The BMW M5 began as
stock, but the ECU was programmed
to gain more mpg
at 6th gear speed, enabling
fewer gas stops. They filled up a total of
five times, and got half of a tank once.
They also had a fuel cell in the trunk for
extra gasoline. The car was outfitted
with six cameras, six cell phones with
GPS capability to enable tracking, four
GPS units for the car, an infrared camera
in the grill to allow night vision, red and
blue police lights in the grill, sirens, air
horns, radar detector and laser jammer.
This car is a virtual mobile tech lab.
The Team Polizei consisted of two
drivers (Alex Roy and David Maher),
a movie producer/director
(Cory Welles)
to document the
event by riding
in the back seat,
ground controllers
on computers
in New
Jersey checking
weather/traffic
and anything
else they could
find, two pilots
to fly overhead to scout for traffic and
police cars, and scouts to assist in the
road ahead. They had previously run the
route to check for speed traps, unusual
conditions, and to take notes. They
also looked into using everything from
cat litter to relief tubes for bathroom
24

necessities but decided not to use them.
They also looked into having a paint that
could be washed off to change the color
of the car to avoid detection and a laser
defeating paint. Neither was used on the
car, and instead they used the blue BMW
as painted.
The team stopped a total of 28
minutes for fuel, driver changes and
bathroom stops during the trip and set
a new record of 31 hours, 4 minutes an
average of about 90 mph, even with stops
and a detour or two to avoid the police.
For the rest of the story, you are going
to have to go see the movie, which may
be out in early 2009. Alex stated that he
would come back at the time
of the release and will try and
get some of the actual cars
and drivers from the “Cannonball”
run to appear. Mark
it on your calendar when
we tell you the date, you
don’t want to miss it. Alex
Roy is an excellent speaker
and kept everyone’s interest
during the presentation. He
then answered questions and
we were shown a clip, which
is also on http://www.youtube.com/
watch?v=bbbtK90LZ9E. The clip is
from inside the Team Polizei BMW
in Florence, Italy during the European
Cannonball Run. Alex and his co-driver
were dressed as Spanish police officers,
and they contacted a pair of Florence
police officers to be directed to a gas
station, and letting them know they
were on a race. The Florence officers
gave them a police escort that you will
not forget. The clip is a little over eight
minutes long, but you will enjoy it. This
will pique your interest in seeing the
movie.
On behalf of the entire Orange Coast
Region, the others attending and I want
to express our gratitude to Paul
and Ed Kramer and AutoKennel
for sponsoring the presentation,
for the great food and drink, and
for raising $691 from donations of
attendees at the event. Paul and
Ed are loyal members who almost
always bring a specialty car to each
Breakfast Meeting, have been long
time advertisers in the Pando, and
host films and televised races at
their AutoKennel showroom. If
you, or your friends need to look
for a car, or want to sell your car,
I hope that you consider checking with
either of them and give them a chance for
your business. See you at the movies!
In 2005 I had the opportunity to purchase
my dream car, the GT3. Luckly for
me, the guy who owned it just happened to
be looking for a Speed Yellow 993 Turbo.
After a lot of negotiating we ended up swapping
cars.
What can I say about this car? It is the
ultimate 911 as far as I’m concerned. After
ten years of competing in the concours
arena, I now had a car that was built to race
so, I signed up for my first Autocross. After
the event I was hooked. The more events I
did, the more I got used to the car. I really
A scenic stop for Mark & Tina
Mark & Tina in the Barvarian Alps
enjoyed my times out at Willow Springs
Raceway, where you can make use of all the
power the car has to offer. I went on to win
my class in 2006 and then again in 2007.
That year we decided on making it a two
Porsche household when I purchased a new
Cayman S. With the mid-engine layout, it is
a fantastic handling car. I am really enjoying
driving it.
In 2008 I was one of 20 engineers
selected by Qantas to train on the new
Airbus A380 aircraft. I spent most of the
year away from home in Sydney, Toulouse,
France and Hamburg, Germany. This was a
great experience as Tina and the boys came
to visit me. They had a wonderful time in
France and also got to visit Rome as well.
Qantas has taken delivery of three aircraft
Porsches lined up and ready to go
so far with 17 more to come. It is currently
operating three days a week out of LAX.
For 2009 we are looking forward to an
exciting year with OCR and also another
great tour with Autobahn Adventures. In
closing, I would like to thank my beautiful
wife and my four great kids who have
supported me and who have made all my
Porsche dreams come true.
“Amazing! I didn’t think it was possible to make the seats
look like new!” (Barry, Fullerton)
Barry was just like many of you; he loved his car and wanted it to look its’ best and was
disappointed with the way his leather seats looked. They weren’t in bad condition but they
were showing the signs of wear. He didn’t want to spend the $1500.00 + labor* or more that
it would take to replace the leather and so he thought he would just have to live with it. He
didn’t and neither do you! He called Pioneer Leather Restoration, Inc. Since his leather
was in good condition except for the appearance, we came to his home and re-applied the
finish coating that is found on all upholstery leather. Three hours and $295.00** later you see
what his reaction was.
Call today to make your Porsche leather seats look like new and, as a bonus when the
work is performed, mention this ad and we will give you for free a leather cleaning and conditioning
kit (A $12.95 value). All work is guaranteed.
An Amendment to the ByLaws / Orange Coast Region
Your Board of Directors are in the process of preparing and amending the club’s bylaws because
the club has grown tremendously in membership, event participation, numbers of events, and
financial complexity since the last Bylaws update in April 1993. At that time, all the club official communication
was via U.S. Mail (electronic facsimile (FAX) was just getting popular and e-mail barely
existed). Today over half of our club communication is via electronic means.
The 1993 bylaws specify that an amendment modification shall be sent via mail to each member
and a written approval be returned by mail. It seems clear the mail referred to as written is U.S.
Mail. Given the size of our membership, the cost of following this procedure to the letter for the entire
proposed amendments would be significant and very cost ineffective. Therefore, your Board is asking
for your approval of the enclosed mini-amendment via the club magazine, which is mailed to every
member. Your approval of this mini-amendment will allow your club to provide you with the entire
proposed amendments via a cost effective combination of FAX, e-mail and web site, in addition to
USPS (United States Postal Service).
Your Board requests you mark the attached Mini-Amendment Ballot return it by USPS to our
Secretary and/or hand deliver it to any Board Member. The ballot below contains the existing language
and the new language added in italic.
Editor’s Notes
by Garey Cooper
A nice putt
Gratuitous Remarks on the
Economy
High atop the Orange Coast
Region office tower, located in the
better part of our little geography,
the view (smog permitting) of our
domain stretches from the coasts
to the cliffs, with all of the urban
sprawl between as an added bonus
for our contemplations.
Now that all of the real estate in
sight has been drastically devalued,
normal families may once again be
actually able to afford living here, as
long as they can come up with a 40%
down payment―in cash.
Your OCR executive team is
awaiting our own distribution of
some TARP funds just like the other
Wall Street moguls. We need it; the
gold plating on the faucets in the
steam room and sauna is wearing
thin from the constant polishing
administered by the lesser staff.
Loves Labors Lost Or At Least
Omitted
Due to the strange disharmony
in time that exists in the publishing
world, I write this column in late
January, just before February begins.
And, this issue arrives around the
first of March.
February contains Valentine’s
Day as every husband, lover, and
paramour knows and inevitably
usually forgets. So it is with deep
regret that I now somewhat tardily
wish all of our OCR ladies and,of
course, most particularly Mrs.
Cooper a Happy Valentine’s Day.
The best way to a celebrate a happy
valentine’s day that I know of consists
of a run by South Coast Plaza, Fashion
Island’ etc. with a stop in an exclusive
shop where the smallness of the
shopping bag is inversely related to
the expense of its contents. Something
for the ears or fingers being especially
important. I once thought of a pair of
replacement brake disks as being in the
picture but the thought of them weighing
down Mrs. Cooper’s ears didn’t seem in
keeping with the spirit of the day.
Featured Members And How They
Got To Be That Way
Truthfully we love ALL the members,
how could we not? But the question
comes up about how one becomes a
“Featured Member” in OCR’s Pando.
The way we have done this in recent
years is to hold a special raffle in
November and December for our charity
which is Orangewood Children’s Home
this year. From the tickets collected,
we draw the names for the following
year to be Featured Members. Some
people decline the honor, writers block
or modesty I guess, but most accept and
this has been a very successful part of
our magazine. The cars are nice and all
but they don’t start, stop, or go without
people and that is the fascinating part of
our club.
Incidentally the order in which the
featured members appear is an extreme
mystery that no one yet has been able
to penetrate. I am told that hugely
complex algorithms are employed by
mathematicians operating in a secretive
laboratory to determine what order the
Featured Members will appear in the
magazine. All I know is that I asked once
and was told “to mind my own business
if I knew what was good for me.”
Track Time Dudes and Dudettes
The New Year begins with the roaring
of engines at our robust autocross series.
Please look at the Pando calendar or
go online for the schedule and sign up
for one. Or, come out and watch one
first. But at least get to one in 2009.
With technology penetrating even into
the OCR, you can now register online
as well so it’s a painless process to get
yourself some fun time in a car with
racing in its DNA, e.g., Porsche. To say
its fun is an understatement, try it this
year and see.
Road Kill on the Information Super
Highway
Thanks to Al Gore having invented
the internet, there are many ways now
to connect with club activities at our
web site. Go to: http://www.pcaocr.
org and get on board. This month we
have the full and complete story of the
Savic Wine Tour more complete than
in last month’s story. With the space
limitations of the Pando removed on the
web, you can see all of the astonishing
pictures and thrilling story of the OCR
turned loose in Central California; don’t
miss it. There is a wonderful layout by
Judy Savic and scrupulously bipartisan
reporting by Tom Calvert in the web
article. Hey, I think I’ll call it a Werticle
as a contraction of “Web” and “Article”
to end my column! It sure beats Blog.
