OCR President Armand Gastelo
I always associate February with
Valentine’s Day and my birthday. These
are two days that should be important
in everyone’s life. I do not mean my
birthday specifically, but the day of your
birth or anyone else’s birth. It should be
a celebration of life and not looked upon
as simply getting older.
Each birthday one should try to do
something different. Do something which
you might not be able to do in the future
because of health reasons or unforeseen
events. You could train for a marathon,
President’s Message
or hike to the top of a mountain, or go
racing in your Porsche. Live life rather
than watch it pass you by every birthday.
This also applies on Valentine’s Day,
whether you are a couple or are single.
A nice gift to give yourself or someone
you love either on Valentine’s Day or a
birthday is a Porsche issued Certificate
of Authenticity. This valuable document
includes your vehicle’s original factory
specifications, production completion
date (birth date) and the manufacturer’s
suggested retail price (MSRP). This can
prove to be invaluable for restoration,
resale and for displaying your car at
official Porsche concours events, such as
the annual PCA Parade. It also makes a
great addition to your trophy case. You
can order one at www.Porsche.com.
Make this February different.
AWESOME Prize.
At the end of the photo rally
Beth and the whale tail 911 on tour
When I first met my soon-to-be husband,
Al, I was driving my 1976 Datsun B-210
and he was driving what he called his
“Pretend Porsche”, a 1973 914 2.0. I was
working at Santa Ana Police Department
as a Records Clerk and Dispatcher and
he was an Investigator in the Juvenile
Investigations Bureau. I got to drive
his boxy Porsche a couple times. Its
horsepower far exceeded my B-210, but I
was content with my little Japanese car.
When Al left the Police Department
and went to work for the State, all things
Porsche took a hiatus. Al sold his 914
and went to the “Dark Side”. He dabbled
in BMW’s and Corvettes, having owned
a number of models over the years. As
long as the car either handled well or came
with a lot of horsepower, he was happy.
With my B-210 advancing in age, Al
recommended I sell it and get something
better…and with air conditioning. A 1981
Nissan 200SX proceeded the purchase of
a 300ZX in 1984. That car was eventually
sold so Al could enjoy another Beamer,
and later, a VW Corrado.
About seven years ago, Al began this
annoying habit while driving the streets
and highways in Southern California. As
we came upon a Porsche (SC or 3.2), he
would point and yell out, “Look! That
man is driving my car!” I ignored his rant,
thinking it was a phase. Well, little did I
know that he wasn’t kidding? He began
buying generic sports car magazines.
Then, he enhanced his purchases with
Porsche specific magazines;”Excellence”
and “911” were the biggies. I had a
feeling he was trying to win me over with
the idea of buying a Porsche. He would
speak about all of the technical aspects
of the car and I would yawn and pretend
that I was interested. I told him we could
never buy a Porsche because we couldn’t
put two sets of golf clubs in the trunk! He
replied, “That’s what the Denali is for.”
PCA…It’s Not Just
a Guy Thing.
Story by Beth Aldecoa, photos by Al and Beth Aldecoa
Down deep inside I knew that he had the
need for speed.
Six years ago, Al told me that he
saw a pristine 1989 3.2 on the Internet. It
was dark gray and had a “whale tale”. I
had him show me of photo of the car so
I knew what a “whale tale” was. He had
bookmarked the car on the Auto Trader
website and quickly brought up the listing.
One Saturday I got home from work and
he told me that he had looked at the car
and drove it, but not to worry…he was
just looking. (Don’t forget those “famous
last words”.) He later announced that we
should both go look at the car.
Well, that fateful day we drove to
the South Bay and met the owner. That
second look sealed the deal for Al. He
told me what a good investment it would
be…for us. I wonder…how many wives
in this club have heard that before? Well,
pushover that I was, he got his car.
Al continued reading everything
Porsche on the Internet and suggested
that we join the PCA. He told me that he
had done a lot of research on the group
and thought it would be good for us to
get together with other Porsche owners.
I thought to myself, “What a crock.” I
figured he just wanted to race “his”
Porsche with a bunch of other crazy guys
who like to drive fast. I say “his” because
I had no interest in driving the Porsche.
It did not have power steering and had a
sensitive clutch. I enjoyed the luxuries
of driving a modern car, our 2004 GMC
Denali…the one that fits two sets of golf
clubs!
Although the 1989 3.2 was the
car of his dreams, Al began wondering
what a more modern vehicle would cost
him. Just fifteen months after our initial
purchase, Al told me about a red 993 he
saw in an Orange County showroom. I
told him a red car would attract the eye of
law enforcement. He tried to explain the
color, Arena Red. This time, he didn’t
waste time showing me the car on the
Internet…he took me to the showroom
to see it firsthand. And again, he
repeated those famous last words “Don’t
worry. I’m not going to buy anything. I
just want to show you.” Do you see a
pattern here? Can you say “pushover”…
again? Well, he said this was the very
last Porsche he needed to buy. It had
better air conditioning and power
steering. We put the 1989 for sale and
eventually the 1996 “Trojan Red” 993
came home. Again, I didn’t drive “his”
car because I thought the clutch was a
little on the strong side. As a passenger,
I enjoyed the extra horsepower and loved
the sound of the engine as it drove at
higher RPMs. And it was a pleasure to
have good air conditioning as we drove
through the desert to visit Frank and
Nancy Goodyear or to breakfast in Palm
Springs on Sunday mornings. I limited
my driving of the 993 to backing it out
on the driveway to wash it or across the
local shopping center parking lot, from
the bank to the Vons.
Mini Cooper and the 993
Al’s “daily driver” at the time was
an Acura CLS. As the mileage inched
upward on the vehicle, so began Al’s
search for a replacement. He sold the
Acura and purchased a Mini Cooper S…
with the John Cooper Works package.
He got 207hp and another “speed racer”.
I got to choose the color, white over gray,
and the “heated seats” package.
I enjoyed driving this little “pocket
rocket”. I actually drove it at one of the
autocross events sponsored by PCA in
Orange County. Al drove the 993 and
bested me by only five seconds! The
autocross was a thrill, but my common
sense (and worn tires) prevailed. After
the event we decided to stick to the
social part of the club and retire from
autocross.
As many of our friends know,
we are planning to pull up stakes from
California and move to North Carolina in
2009. Once our house is sold, we will
bid adieu to the Golden State and become
“Tar heels”. In planning for this event,
we decided we no longer needed three
cars. With a very heavy heart, Al said it
was time to sell the 993 and the Mini and
to invest in a Porsche he could use as a
“daily driver”. Thus, the 993 and Mini
were sold and we purchased “our” 2004
Boxster S. We never thought we would
enjoy a convertible. I can tell you, we
both get a grin on our face as we climb
into the car. And I finally took the plunge
and began driving the Boxster. With its
modern engineering, I can honestly say
I don’t miss the Mini…except for the
cool “back fire” noise as you downshift
through the gears! I found the Boxster
S to be such an easy car to drive that I
drive it whenever he is not! I especially
enjoy driving with the convertible top
down. And, for Al’s sake, I will say that I
appreciate its high performance and good
looks.
We joined the PCA in late 2004. Al
attended the breakfast meetings at the
Hofs Hut near the airport; I worked on
Saturdays and told him to “have fun”.
When I would get home from work, he
would tell me about the people he met
and the variety of cars that were there...
yawn. Then the “Pandemonium” began
arriving. He read it cover to cover and
began telling me about the events planned
for the club by its members.
Well, purchasing Porsches has been
Al’s thing, but the events have become
my thing. We attended our first club
trip…the Mystery Train in Ventura. I was
introduced to some of the members (and
wives) that Al had already befriended.
We checked into the hotel and enjoyed
the “happy hour” before a bus shuttled
us to the train depot. As we arrived, we
saw a parking area filled with Corvettes.
Too bad they did not have the sense to
be transported to the train. We began
wine tasting at the depot before boarding
the train. Our train car was lively and
festive…thanks to the members being
able to wet their whistles with other than
water and soda. As I walked through
the Corvette people’s car to access the
restroom, I thought I had entered a church.
No fun and laughter in that crowd! As
I passed through the car again, I began
chanting aloud, “Por-sha, Por-sha, Porsha”.
The chant continued and grew as
I joined our train car. I look back now
and think how lucky I was to get past the
“Vetters” in one piece! And to this day,
we still wonder about the “murder plot”
on the Mystery Train…can anyone tell us
who killed whom?
Having had a grand time on my first
outing, I realized that the Porsche club
represented far more to Al than driving
fast and eating doughnuts on the third
Saturday of each month. The club is not
just for the “drivers”; it has events to make
the driving experience fun for couples,
too. We began to develop a new group of
friends that had little to do with work and
everything to do with Porsches.
We have attended Bob Savic’s annual
Wine Tour, the December Christmas Party,
the Hearts and Garage Tour, the Follies
in Palm Springs, the Octoberfest in Big
Bear and several “day trips”. One of our
memorable trips was the three-day jaunt
to Sedona planned by Frank and Nancy
Goodyear. Picture packs of motorcycles
making their annual trek to the River
for the Laughlin “River Run”. Then put
about 15 Porsches from Orange County
on the same roads. Needless to say,
the “hogs” had nothing on our German
engineered vehicles! We arrived safely
at the Goodyear’s and have visited with
Frank and Nancy two additional times
since then, enjoying both their hospitality
and their friendship.
Jay Leno likes Theo Russell and Beth
Through the club we’ve also met and
become good friends with Doug and Theo
Russell. This year we joined them at the
Monterey Historic races. We drove “our”
Boxster…you can’t imagine how much
stuff you can fit in a Boxster if you pack it
right! We actually camped two nights in a
small tent, using our car as our oversized
suitcase. If you have never experienced
the races, you don’t know what you are
missing. We only had to walk about fifty
feet from our campsite to watch the cars
race around the turn and up the hill. All I
can say is “WOW”!
On the veranda at Club Mud in Monterey
And because of the club, Al met a
member who is a kindred spirit AND a
USC fan, Buzzy Klevens. Our Saturdays
in fall are spent with Buzzy and Debbie
and friends watching USC and college
football games on the many TV’s in the
Klevins’ garage.
What began as Al’s annoying habit
of pointing out Porsches brought new
adventures to my life. I am enjoying
friendships and travel not only PCAsponsored,
but outside of the group’s
activities. With over 1500 members in
PCA-OCR, it still amazes me that only a
small core of folk seem to attend many of
the events. I hope that changes and more
members take a chance to experience
what the PCA has to offer.
8 FEBRUARY 2009 9

In a cavern...lived the lovely Mrs. Cooper, who is quite a friend of mine
At this stage I understand that certain
parts of my own Porsche obsession
interest Mrs. Cooper not in the least.
These certain parts would be almost any
activity really with perhaps the exception
of the tours and the parties. So, our
compromise for this year was that she
accompany me on the annual Bob &
Judy Savic wine tour. The destination this
year was the Paso Robles area, one of my
favorites. Also a further inducement to
Mrs. Cooper was the existence of a gem
of a golf course, Hunter Ranch, located
within the vineyards themselves in the
same city.
Wine Pairings For the Porsche
Aficionado
This year we decided to leave a bit
earlier than the rest and make a Thursday
evening stopover in Ojai, California. This
is the home of the Ojai Valley Ranch,
another golf course gem (are you getting
the drift of what it takes to compromise
in our partnership?) Because one evening
at the Ranch itself is a down payment on
a small hybrid, we stayed at our favorite
local motel: The Hummingbird Inn just
down the road. It’s walking distance to
town and one of our favorite restaurants
there, Suzanne’s. This turned out to be
something of a mistake because while
walking past the old store fronts in
downtown Ojai, we spotted a silverware
set that according to the Mrs. was an
absolute necessity. After purchasing this,
a week at the Ojai Inn would have been
a bargain. This also curtailed the walk to
Suzanne’s so instead we feasted at Azu
which was also very good.
At dinner I decided that what was
missing in the Porsche lexicon of the
Orange Coast Region was a list of wine
Stompin’ and Rompin’ Through
the Vines with the Orange
Coast Region
Story by Garey Cooper, photos by Garey Cooper and Tom Calvert
Tom (our
photographer)
and Suzanne
Calvert
pairings for our club. Therefore I shall
use these in my descriptions as we go
forward in our narration.
Lug Nut Noir
Getting up early Friday morning to
continue on to Paso Robles I discovered
that the tire monitoring system on the
BMW 750i “Schwarz Bar” was indicating
a front tire was deflating. Filling this got
me to thinking of the perfect wine to
change tires by: Lug Nut Noir of course!
So that was my first Porsche Wine
Pairing.
Paso Robles Pas De Deux
I really enjoy the drive up Pacific Coast
Highway (PCH) to Santa Barbara and
points north, including San Luis Obispo.
There is something restful and serene
about going along the ocean and then
cutting over through Solvang and up
into the interior valley. I always think of
my youth surfing up and down the coast
and the old Californios who inhabited
the area before the Gold Rush. These
were the builders of the haciendas and
ranchos, who besides being legendary
horsemen were also the source of legends
like “Zorro.”
Getting into Paso Robles late at
night we found a likely restaurant and
had a very good meal. Paso is blessed
with more than its fair share of eateries,
thanks to the local wine as inspiring the
gastronomy.
Marshall Bob
Savic greets
everyone at
the hotel
Carerra Cabriolet
Marshal Bob Savic runs a tight ship so we
knew Saturday would be an early day to
meet up with the rest of the OCR bunch.
And it was just so, also Marshal Bob
REALLY WAS Marshal Bob―dressed
up like a cowboy right out of Gunsmoke,
so we knew who the boss was.
Our group was very fortunate in the
weather department as it was a perfect
day to chase through the roads around the
vineyards, and the open-top folks could
completely enjoy all the scenery. So after
a little thinking, I came up with the perfect
wine for the day’s motoring: Carerra
Cabriolet! Thus my second Porsche wine
was pairing.
Sip and Savor
The second part of our touring Saturday is
always stopping by the beautiful wineries
and sampling the wares. As Marshal Bob
has prepared the way for us, the OCR
group always gets top billing and the
tasting pours are perhaps a trifle more
generous than they might be otherwise.
My pattern in these tasting stops has
generally been to find that as the day goes
on and more wine clears my palate, each
variety yields a better tasting and more
desirable wine purchase. The Coopers’
wine acquisitions begin with one bottle
and sometimes end up with us joining
the wine club of a last stop and being
surprised a month or so later when the
The OCR group out of the cars
case shows up on our door! But, it never
goes to waste either.
Vehicular Vioginier
Thanks to Marshal Bob’s influence
with the owner, we once again had the
opportunity of lunch at Opolo Vineyards.
This was one wine club I did join on our
last trip two years earlier, so it was “back
to the scene of the crime” where we
had a wonderful mesa top pit barbecue
with lamb and all of the trimmings. This
is a special stop and it is a remarkable
experience to eat this freshly prepared
delicacy gazing out over the vines of the
Opolo Winery.
Mrs. Cooper and I sat at a table with
old wine friends (NOT winos!) Mike and
Florine Swain, Bill and Barbara Enke,
and David and Cynthia Guardia. As a
social lubricant wine, is great for making
you think your jokes and anecdotes are
hilarious. I suspect it has the same effect
on others as well because we all had a
great laugh with our unhurried lunch on
the hill.
Marshal Bob was passing out
samples of this stuff called “Slivovitz”
which is a clear liquid distilled from
old farm coveralls found in Yugoslavian
potato cellars. A few strong sips of this
and not only are you hilarious but you
become legendary, and immortal. Just
don’t try this stuff while lighting the
barbecue, you’ll go off like firecracker on
the Fourth of July. Opolo had a Vioginier
at the table and since we drove to the site,
I had my third wine pairing: Vehicular
Vioginier… viola!
Cuvée in the Cave
After a nap to get the last of the Slivovitz
out of my central nervous system, we
had a spectacular dinner in the caves
of Eberle Winery. Our tables were set
throughout the barrels of aging wine
with the powerful
aroma of slumbering
wine growing to the
proper vintage. What a
wonderful spot to end
up the day. Here we
had circular tables and
great food and a chance
to brag about how good
we drove that day’s
route. When I say cave
by the way, I mean it literally, we really
did eat dinner in a wine cave. I tried to
tap one of the barrels but the staff saw
me and put a quick stop to my attempt to
thread a MacDonald’s straw through the
bung of a nearby barrel. It’s a good thing
that there was only one way into and
out of the cave; after our dinner and the
wine, our group might still be wandering
around down there.
Motor Merlot
Due to my factually unsubstantiated
belief that I can golf, we left the tour
group for a round of golf on Sunday. For
our return trip we took the inland route
which goes through some spectacularly
uninteresting terrain. That is unless you
have some fascination with modern
industrial farming; sad to say, I do not. So
although the return is quicker through the
inland road, it is a lot less exciting to see
the north end of so many trucks heading
south than it is to roll along the Pacific
Ocean.
So for this part of the trip I decided
the perfect wine pairing would be Motor
Merlot. Just you and the road and a few
hundred thousand other cars, coming and
going, or going and coming depending
upon which side of the freeway you
are on. Would I do this trip again? In a
heartbeat; it’s always well organized and
Judy Savic charms all the men
Bob with Scott Huddleston at the Saturday dinner in the
Caves at Eberle Winery
The Savic 1959 356 Coupe at the front of the pack at the
Olive Oil ranch
special fun. Try it yourself next year, and
think up some Porsche wine pairings of
your own...Disc Brake Barolo anyone?
In vino veritas...or in this case,
at least a bit of humor
Everyone waves at the
Sitting here at my lonely desk in the
basement (dungeon, perhaps?) of our
massive OCR Tower (plagiarizing on
Garey’s description) I begin to reminisce
on the year that was 2008. What a year!
Our economy went down the drain.
We all lost millions as our investments
headed south (similar to buying a
Corvette!) Gasoline prices soared to an
all-time high and then came back down
to lows we hadn’t seen in some years.
And yet through all of this turmoil, the
OCR Goodie Store was always there to
serve you with even more new offerings
as the year progressed. I think even the
Porsche Design store had trouble keeping
up with our Goodie Store!
I started 2008 with hopes of
managing the Goodie Store as I did in
2007, by bringing more ideas to fruition
in the form of even more merchandise
for our millions and millions of OCR
members to enjoy. And enjoy they did!
I’m proud to say that both purchases
and sales reached an all-time high for
the Goodie Store, and the masses were
happy as they headed home from the
Breakfast Club with something new in
their bags each month. Plus the Goodie
Store offerings at the 2008 Concours
were through the canopy roof!
In 2008 the Goodie Store was able to
offer not only our usual Member T-shirts
that have been a staple for so many years
now, but also new long sleeve T-shirts
with the Porsche name on the sleeves.
And not only did we have our OCR
logo on many items, I also offered the
Porsche name, Porsche crest and even the
PCA emblem as well. The variety was
endless! Plus I upped the ante towards
the end of 2008 and pushed the Goodie
Store into first class by offering beautiful
lambskin leather jackets for both him and
her embroidered with the Porsche crest.
The members were ecstatic! But at the
same time the Goodie Store had “gone
to the dogs” as Pete Lech phrased it. He
meant this jokingly, of course, as I also
offered doggie tank tops embroidered
with Porsche Pooch on the back. Not
even the Porsche Design store has this
kind of offering, but after all, I couldn’t
forget man’s best friend as evidenced by
my photo of Viggo, my sister Lillian’s
five-year-old Toy Yorkshire Terrier who
is proudly wearing his tank! (Viggo is
also very proud of his Uncle David but
still expects modeling royalties.)
5-year-old
Even though the Goodie Store broke
sales records in 2008, our so-called profit
was very, very low. Only $45 profit for
the entire year! Some members might
see Al Aldecoa and me “raking in the
money” at the Breakfast Club, but in
actuality there is hardly any mark-up at
all on any of the items. This is due to
the fact that the Goodie Store is strictly a
service to the members and not for profit.
Some of the items are sold at just above
cost while the sale items are sold below
cost. What a bargain!
I hope to offer new items again in
2009 but this year, the items will be in
limited quantities as opposed to the last
two years. This not only assures a quicker
turn of merchandise but also makes it
easier for the one who has to transport
the items from the vendor to their home
and then to the Breakfast Club and back
again each month . . . that being little old
ME! But if I didn’t like doing the job
then I wouldn’t have agreed to stay on as
your Goodie Store Manager for “awhile
longer” (whatever that means). Plus I
get to jibber jabber with all you fine folks
every month who regularly come to make
your monthly purchases. After all, you
can’t let the current economy prevent you
from spending some of your money on
The 2008 Concours Goodie Store Staff handsome in OCR
threads
the latest Goodie Store offerings! And
in 2009 you will be able to order your
member name badges on-line at our Club
web site: www.pcaocr.org. We were
thinking of adding some Goodie Store
items as well to our web site but we’re
holding off at this time.
Before I end this, I want to thank
my friend, Al Aldecoa, for always being
there at each month’s Breakfast Club to
assist me with sales. It would have been
very difficult for me were it not for his
passionate sales assistance. I’m going to
miss Al, as he and his lovely wife Beth,
are moving to North Carolina this year.
I’ll be looking for help very soon!
So that was the Goodie Store in 2008
with a brief look into 2009. As always,
thank you for your purchases and I always
look forward to seeing you at the Breakfast
Club or at the other Club events we have
scheduled. Now it’s time for me to sneak
this article to one of our Editor’s assistants
as I should have had this completed
for the January issue. One month late!
Gasp! (Oh, Pando Editor have mercy!)
I’ll probably be sentenced to the gallows.
And all this for a volunteer’s salary!
Al Aldecoa and David, your friendly Goodie Store reps.
Porsches on Parade in Laguna Niguel
Story by Armand Gastelo, photos by Armand Gastelo and Judy Lech
Our club has participated in the Laguna
Niguel Holiday Parade for many years.
I have been lucky enough to organize
our participation in this event since
2002. Every year our members enter
approximately 18 cars. We are only
allowed 12, but I can’t resist including as
many cars as possible.
On more than one occasion, a
member has told me that I can “herd
cats,” after seeing how I herd our group
through the starting gate.
I try to enter Porsches from different
years and different models. I have yet to
have a Carrera GT show up. I came close
this last year, but the GT owner cancelled
at the last minute.
We had 19 cars enter the 2008 parade,
which touts itself as being the second
can believe it considering we did not
have to check in until 10:40 am and the
parade started at 10:00 am! Our group
was entry number 96!
The parade lasted approximately two
hours from start to finish. A small group
of us drove to Las Brisas Restaurant in
La-guna Beach for a nice lunch. I took
this opportunity to present the 2008 Male
Enthusiast of the Year award to Buzzy
Klevens who participated in the parade.
For those of you who did not hear this
yet, Kari Knudson won the 2008 Female
Enthusiast of the Year award, which I
presented to her during our end of the
year Holiday Party.
I look forward once again in entering
our club next December in Laguna
Niguel’s parade. I will ask for volunteers
in November. Hopefully I will get that
elusive Carrera GT to show up.
Melody and I have been going to
Monterey for the Historic Races since
1993. For the past few years, Tom
and Phyllis Meng have joined us and
helped to explore new ways to go north.
This article will combine the Meng
impressions with the Muno impressions
to, hopefully, entertain you―the readers.
Early Thursday morning two
Porsches started out on an eventful trip
to the 35th annual Monterey Historic
races. Leader Jerry Muno does not
travel to the Historics via the normal
routes but always plans a different route
that incorporates lots of Porsche friendly
roads. Driving up Interstate 5 past
the grapevine we enjoyed the freeway
speeds. After passing the grapevine, we
left the main road and found some back
roads that took us from Interstate 5 to
Highway 101.
The roads were as wonderful as
the weather and there was no traffic.
We went through Maricopa and Taft
and then on through the mountains and
the Central California wine country.
The vista views on both sides of the
mountains were as spectacular as the
roads being traveled.
We stopped for fuel and food in
Paso Robles and then it was off again on
a short run up Highway 101. We turned
off just past Bradley to go through Fort
Hunter Liggett and down the Nacimiento
Road to Highway 1. This road has been
on Jerry’s Bucket List for a long time,
but was a slight disappointment. The
road was only one and a half lanes wide
and you could not get into a rhythm for
fear of oncoming traffic. The start of
the road was through a recent burn area.
Logs were still smoking from the hot
fire. As we made the final descent to
Highway 1 it was interesting to see the
top of the fog banks and then descend
through them.
We got to Monterey in plenty of
time to check in at Casa Munras and
have dinner at one of our favorite
restaurants. If we continue to gather
favorite restaurants, we will have to stay
more days to accommodate them all.
Icons reunited...Mario Andretti and the Lotus Formula 1
Friday morning it was off to Laguna
Seca Raceway. This is the best day
at the track because all of the cars get
track time and the pits are always busy.
The cars are split into two groups for
Saturday and Sunday racing. This year
the Historics honored Mario Andretti
and the Alfa Romero that participated in
the first historic races at Laguna Seca.
Mario provided some excitement for the
crowd with demonstration laps in the
1978 F1 Lotus in which he won many
races. The highlight for Jerry was the
six-wheel Tyrrell F1 car from 1977.
Four small front wheels were used to
reduce wind resistance. He watched this
car run in an early Long Beach Grand
Prix and was very impressed. Also
impressive was the wide variety of race
cars.
The Franklin, when bigger was better in racing
From the very early Franklin (with
well scrubbed tires) to the relatively
modern Ginetta, everybody drove as fast
as they dared. Seeing these cars make a
commitment to the Corkscrew and then
hang on down the hill is a special thrill.
OCR was well represented at the races.
We met Doug and Theo Russell along
with Al and Beth Aledecoa along with a
professional associate of Tom’s, Janna
Vargas, who was accompanied by her
husband. We, of course, met in the only
Pub at the track. Unlike the Munos and
Mengs, who stayed in a comfortable
hotel, Doug, Theo, Al, Beth and Jana
were camping at the racetrack. They had
front row seats for all the action and did
not have to deal with the traffic getting
to and from the track.
Diminutive Ginetta, so typically British
After two fun-filled days at the
Historics, Tom and Jerry headed off to
the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance
leaving Phyllis and Melody to hit the
shops in Carmel. Here they found
another favorite restaurant. General
Motors had a large presentation this year
and brought many Motorama show cars.
No wonder the early Corvettes looked
so good. GM must have had a styling
competition between all their Divisions
that ended with the Chevrolet Corvette.
There were Corvette-styled cars from
each of the Divisions.
A show car from “Motorama,” only in the USA
The other concours cars were
even more impressive. Herb Wysard
entered his Glockler Porsche that
was very unique. It did not win in its
class, but should have won a People’s
Choice award. There was always such
a crowd around it that we could not get
any pictures. This car was at the first
house on the OCR Garage Tour the next
weekend and was well received.
Autocross Corner
The Eguina GT2 at speed
Everyone at the December event was
given a couple of early gifts. The first
gift was the lack of rain. However, those
walking the track early on were provided
with a few sprinkles here and there.
Luckily we escaped any additional rain
and had a nice, albeit cool overcast day
of racing. Our second gift came from our
brilliant and dedicated track design team.
This gift came as a very long straight on
the back stretch which gave us all the
opportunity to open it up a bit (with safety
front and center). These two gifts were a
great way to start the Christmas season.
Just finishing my first full year with
the Orange Coast PCA autocross, I take
a moment to reflect back. December
2007, my second autocross was great,
yet I did not appreciate the dynamics of
the group. Some were racing with fervor
against the clock; others seemed to have
more vested in the end-of-the-year race.
Rolling the clock forward to December
2008 I was also in that position, certainly
striving to exceed my last run with grace,
precision and a better time (at least that
was the plan), but there was something
else…Many of the participants were also
working against an annual score with
plans of clenching the coveted class titles.
This mix of immediate and long-term
victory makes the aura of the December
race much different then all of the other
calendar year events. Even if you are
not one in the running for the overall
annual class awards, any individual may
still influence the outcome, especially
during the last race of the season. To
see everyone’s scores please visit: http://
forward me to February for the Evolution
and Drivers Education schools and then
bounce me straightaway to March for
the first 2009 race. The fellowship and
sense of community will not have to wait
that long however. January 31st will be
the date for the annual Autocross party at
Walters Porsche in Riverside (Adams and
the 91). Last year I hesitated in attending
this annual event as I considered myself
a “newbie.” I now realize that this was
a poor decision. Regardless of your
number of times with the autocross clan
you should consider attending.
Personal note: I am honored to have
been asked to prepare the December
2008 autocross report, thank you Lisa.
The experience I have had over the
last year has been simply wonderful
(maybe with the exception of the two
sets of tires). Our busy lives bring us all
many responsibilities and obligations.
Autocross driving has provided me with
a new set of friends and excitement which
I sincerely look forward to month after
month. Perhaps those of you reading this
will give autocross a chance in 2009; you
will discover the magic built into these
fantastic automobiles.
2009 OCR AutoX Program – COME
Join The Fun!
The Walter’s Porsche AutoX Series is
about to kick off the 2009 season. With
the New Year another brave soul has
stepped forward to help run the OCR
AutoX program. James Buck is being
“promoted” from Chief of Equipment to
an Event Chairman. He will be assisted by
two of my favorite 2008 Event Chairmen
Bob Scheussler and Jim Harris. Mark
Trawartha will be retiring. So he thinks. I
will slip deeper into my role of Emeritus.
For 2009 the OCR AutoX Team
again has a great program planned
with more drivers training events, the
usual 10 AutoX events at El Toro, and
a couple track events. To kick off the
New Year the OCR Drivers Clinic will
be held at El Toro on February 21 st . The
Drivers Clinic is a great time to play
with your Porsche and see why “There
is no substitute!” The following day
an Auto-X practice event is planned.
While these two events are in process
the Evolution Performance Driving
School will be holding a Teen Drivers
School on Saturday and Advanced Phase
1 and 2 Auto-X Driving Schools on both
Saturday and Sunday.
The AutoX Team is made up of OCR
members just like you and me. They are a
great group of hard working individuals.
However, keep in mind these events do
not just happen. The team can always
use a little more help. So this year please
make it a point to ask how YOU might
help. This can be as simple picking
up the morning coffee and donuts or
assisting in helping the tech crew. You
could help at registration by making
sure the waivers are signed or (and this
is my favorite job) make sure the heads
are strategically located. Also, helping
unpack the equipment in the morning
and packing the truck at the end of the
day is always appreciated. Remember
it’s your club and your event.
PCA - Zone 8 Time Trials
For 2009 the Zone 8 Time Trials Team
return to Seattle to catch the boat. Tom
feels that you must experience this
wonderful Concours at least once, and
that it cannot be beaten. It also satisfied
another item on Jerry’s Bucket List.
Late Sunday afternoon we headed
down Highway 1 to Cambria. There
we spent the night relaxing and
talking about all the great things we
had experienced. We are all ready to
go again next year. Especially since
Porsche will be the featured mark.
Anyone interested in next year should
start working on hotel reservations
in January. Race tickets and parking
corral passes can be obtained from the
Monterey Bay Region of PCA in June or
July.
See you there next year!
3 iterations of turbo charged Porsches
I will now continue the final evolution of
the Air-Cooled 911-993 as it is completed.
As I write this (January 4, 2009) the
engine is now installed in a 911 chassis.
However there has been a major change
of plans, and ideas.
First of all as any Porsche
modification or upgrade is considered one
must ask: “Exactly what am I expecting to
gain from this work and expense?” To my
dismay I realized that the normal things
I did on the 930 type engines were not
necessary on the 993 due to the evolution
and improvement in the later series of
motors.
As I have previously written, I was
unable to find truly competent advice as
to what was necessary to build a high
performance street 993 Turbo engine.
There is a lot of expert racing advice and
also a wealth of stock (street engine) help
available, but not much was available for
what I needed –at least when I started. The
safest method to follow, since a complete
teardown was required to inspect and clean
up the inside, (remember this engine was
a wreck recovery) was to do everything as
A lot of this has proved unnecessary,
but after my rebuild I now had an engine
capable of near 650 reliable horsepower.
My own particular issue was, “What was
I going to do with such an engine in a
2,600 pound 911?” (And that is with a
full tank of gas (22 gls), small tool box,
and all the normal stuff found in any
street 911.) I am speaking here about
my much modified 911 that many of you
have seen at our Porsche Club events
over the years.
My current fully upgraded CIS 3.2
turbo engine already spins the rear tires
with ease with a G-50 and Limited Slip
Differential (LSD). And when I did this
by accident on the freeway recently in
4th gear while hitting the throttle to make
a pass and both rear wheels broke loose
on boost; I was more than just startled!
So, actually power is not a problem and
in fact I don’t need MORE of it in my
911.
With a 600+ Hp 3.6tt what would
have happened in a similar circumstance?
I really did not want to, or need to find out.
The engine compartment
Two things have happened:
My Evolution 911 needed more rubber
on the rear than my pre-existing RS flairs
allowed (10X17 wheels & 255 sticky
rubber), plus it needed a real paint job.
My rescued and rebuilt 993ttS was more
engine than I would ever need. It also
cost a lot to build. And for me, it was
more than I would ever use. And possibly
just too much power for the chassis to
comfortably handle.
A wise old saying: “A man’s got to know
his limitation” -Inspector Callahan.
So, the rebuilt 993ttS engine was sold and
will to go into an evolution 1987 Carrera
― this is a car that I did the first C-2 (965)
Turbo conversion on back in 1992 – and
wrote about in these pages…..around that
time.
Now my Evo Blue is getting a make
over!
Next month the 911-993 TTS engine…
will continue after a bit of catching up on
technical questions.
The reason I commonly write about
my experiences with my own 911 is that
these early 911’s are the one Porsche
most modified and upgraded by Porsche
enthusiasts!
My experience is your gain -or loss,
depending on how you look at it?
Briefly the 993tts engine in
installed is NOW installed in the ’87
chassis and I am currently re-fitting
and modifying some things so that
the 993ttS engine does fit into an
early 911 chassis.
My 911 is in the paint shop
waiting for its color sanding and hard
polish. It is Mexico Blue applied to
new bigger 930 steel fender flairs,
a short hood (steel), and Ruf CTR-
“Amazing! I didn’t think it was possible to make the seats
look like new!” (Barry, Fullerton)
Barry was just like many of you; he loved his car and wanted it to look its’ best and was
disappointed with the way his leather seats looked. They weren’t in bad condition but they
were showing the signs of wear. He didn’t want to spend the $1500.00 + labor* or more that
it would take to replace the leather and so he thought he would just have to live with it. He
didn’t and neither do you! He called Pioneer Leather Restoration, Inc. Since his leather
was in good condition except for the appearance, we came to his home and re-applied the
finish coating that is found on all upholstery leather. Three hours and $295.00** later you see
what his reaction was.
Call today to make your Porsche leather seats look like new and, as a bonus when the
work is performed, mention this ad and we will give you for free a leather cleaning and conditioning
kit (A $12.95 value). All work is guaranteed.
Editor’s Notes
by Garey Cooper
The stylish Mr. Cooper
Here We Are Folks
Well, it is truly 2009 by February. I have by
now gotten used to writing 2009 instead
of 2008 and also become accustomed to
the new year. High atop the OCR Tower
overlooking the crumbling Orange
County infrastructure we are indeed
ready to have a rollicking Porsche Club
year. Not that we are immune from the
economical concerns that are prevalent;
we’ve lowered the thread count on our
towels for the club sauna, everyone has
to do their part after all.
Have We Got a Deal For You
If you wanted to find deals, I think now
is the time to find them. The current prize
Porsche chassis for hot roding is probably
the SC from the middle 70’s. But after
years of being sacrificed to various
customizing fantasies, these are now
getting pretty rare. So rare that unmolested
examples have been increasing in price
recently to the point that buying one to
cut up as an RS “look-a-like” becomes
impractical.
Featured Member Continued from page 9
And although the Porsche began
as a “guy thing” in our family, I, too,
am enjoying the benefits of being
a Porsche owner. Although I don’t
drive at the events, I make a pretty
good “navigator”. (Yeah, he always
tells me to stop giving directions!)
Well, Al was right when he
suggested that we join PCA and
enjoy the company of other Porsche
owners. AND he was right when he
told me that we would make many
I wonder why we don’t see
more early 996 Carerra chassis being
customized? These can be had for almost
laughably low prices, compared to new.
And the after-market industry has caught
up to them with a whole panoply of
specialized pieces to take them in any
direction you’d like to go, fast street...
track...or rolling stereo den.
One of the early water-cooled
chassis that is now getting the “hot rod”
treatment is the Boxster 986 series. There
is a Spec Boxster class now in PCA and
we have a local young woman who is
getting some attention for being a new
hot shoe in this interesting new class for
competition. I hope to do a write up on
this in the near future.
So, What’s Up Doc?
Don’t forget the Krispy Kreme meeting
each the month. These are a lower key
counter part to our regular first Saturday
of the month Breakfast Club at Original
Mike’s in Santa Ana. I happen to like
Krispy Kreme donuts a lot, and when
they’re warm from the fryer you just
can’t beat them...yum. It’s always lots
of fun to see the gang walking around
with frosting coating their cheeks as they
check the cars in the parking lot at the
Mall of Orange just off the 57 Freeway
where these gatherings are held.
Tall Tales in the Golden West
Just how do stories get published in the
Pandemonium? Actually there is very
little secret to the process. Typically
someone sends me an email and tells
me they have something in mind. I don’t
recall turning too many down. Once I
receive the story we edit it a bit, removing
friends.
I’ll have
to hand
it to
him…
because
he’s not
right that
often!
Camping out at Laguna Seca for the Historics
the curse words and over implementation
of things likes commas and semicolons;
as necessary. Then they go to the Pando
production. I am sure that you must have
some story to share with our readership?
Let me know and we can put you into
print!
I Say Rallye
You may say Rally but it’s really more
sophisticated to use the “e” in the word.
It impresses people and makes you
seem more continental, urbane, kind
of Yves Montand charm in prose. Mr.
Larry Moore is ginning up a couple of
rallyes for us this year that are going to
be a whole bunch of fun in a bucket seat.
Here is a driving event where two can
be involved and the teaming can matter
to the outcome. I can only urge that you
take part in at least one of these this year.
I know your Porsche will appreciate it;
get it out into the sunshine and a fair
road.
Honest Officer It Was Only a Grocery
List
If you’ve seen the signs you know that
you can no longer text and drive. I mean
not even a little love note to your fair
companion without risking the official
approbation of the State of California.
What next will they specifically ban
in a moving car? I suppose sculpting,
I can see the signs now: “Don’t Sculpt
and Drive…it’s the law.” Do we need
so many specific interdictions? Why not
just say, drive safe or else?
Oh well, enjoy the magazine, send
me a story, a photograph, and come out
to one of our events. You’ll have fun
even if you can’t legally text on the way.
