3 iterations of turbo charged Porsches<br />

I will now continue the final evolution of<br />

the Air-Cooled 911-993 as it is completed.<br />

As I write <strong>this</strong> (January 4, <strong>2009</strong>) the<br />

engine is now installed in a 911 chassis.<br />

However there has been a major change<br />

of plans, and ideas.<br />

First of all as any Porsche<br />

modification or upgrade is considered one<br />

must ask: “Exactly what am I expecting to<br />

gain from <strong>this</strong> work and expense?” To my<br />

dismay I realized that the normal things<br />

I did on the 930 type engines were not<br />

necessary on the 993 due to the evolution<br />

and improvement in the later series of<br />

motors.<br />

As I have previously written, I was<br />

unable to find truly competent advice as<br />

to what was necessary to build a high<br />

performance street 993 Turbo engine.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is a lot of expert racing advice and<br />

also a wealth of stock (street engine) help<br />

available, but not much was available for<br />

what I needed –at least when I started. <strong>The</strong><br />

safest method to follow, since a complete<br />

teardown was required to inspect and clean<br />

up the inside, (remember <strong>this</strong> engine was<br />

a wreck recovery) was to do everything as<br />

I have done with 930 Turbo upgrades.<br />

A lot of <strong>this</strong> has proved unnecessary,<br />

but after my rebuild I now had an engine<br />

capable of near 650 reliable horsepower.<br />

My own particular <strong>issue</strong> was, “What was<br />

I going to do with such an engine in a<br />

2,600 pound 911?” (And that is with a<br />

full tank of gas (22 gls), small tool box,<br />

and all the normal stuff found in any<br />

street 911.) I am speaking here about<br />

my much modified 911 that many of you<br />

have seen at our Porsche Club events<br />

over the years.<br />

My current fully upgraded CIS 3.2<br />

turbo engine already spins the rear tires<br />

with ease with a G-50 and Limited Slip<br />

Differential (LSD). And when I did <strong>this</strong><br />

by accident on the freeway recently in<br />

4th gear while hitting the throttle to make<br />

a pass and both rear wheels broke loose<br />

on boost; I was more than just startled!<br />

So, actually power is not a problem and<br />

in fact I don’t need MORE of it in my<br />

911.<br />

With a 600+ Hp 3.6tt what would<br />

have happened in a similar circumstance?<br />

I really did not want to, or need to find out.<br />

<strong>The</strong> engine compartment<br />

Two things have happened:<br />

My Evolution 911 needed more rubber<br />

on the rear than my pre-existing RS flairs<br />

allowed (10X17 wheels & 255 sticky<br />

rubber), plus it needed a real paint job.<br />

My rescued and rebuilt 993ttS was more<br />

engine than I would ever need. It also<br />

cost a lot to build. And for me, it was<br />

more than I would ever use. And possibly<br />

just too much power for the chassis to<br />

comfortably handle.<br />

A wise old saying: “A man’s got to know<br />

his limitation” -<strong>In</strong>spector Callahan.<br />

So, the rebuilt 993ttS engine was sold and<br />

will to go into an evolution 1987 Carrera<br />

― <strong>this</strong> is a car that I did the first C-2 (965)<br />

Turbo conversion on back in 1992 – and<br />

wrote about in these pages…..around that<br />

time.<br />

Now my Evo Blue is getting a make<br />

over!<br />

Next month the 911-993 TTS engine…<br />

will continue after a bit of catching up on<br />

technical questions.<br />

<strong>The</strong> reason I commonly write about<br />

my experiences with my own 911 is that<br />

these early 911’s are the one Porsche<br />

most modified and upgraded by Porsche<br />

enthusiasts!<br />

My experience is your gain -or loss,<br />

depending on how you look at it?<br />

Briefly the 993tts engine in<br />

installed is NOW installed in the ’87<br />

chassis and I am currently re-fitting<br />

and modifying some things so that<br />

the 993ttS engine does fit into an<br />

early 911 chassis.<br />

My 911 is in the paint shop<br />

waiting for its color sanding and hard<br />

polish. It is Mexico Blue applied to<br />

new bigger 930 steel fender flairs,<br />

a short hood (steel), and Ruf CTR-<br />
