Autocross Corner

Everyone at the December event was
given a couple of early gifts. The first
gift was the lack of rain. However, those
walking the track early on were provided
with a few sprinkles here and there.
Luckily we escaped any additional rain
and had a nice, albeit cool overcast day
of racing. Our second gift came from our
brilliant and dedicated track design team.
This gift came as a very long straight on
the back stretch which gave us all the
opportunity to open it up a bit (with safety
front and center). These two gifts were a
great way to start the Christmas season.
Just finishing my first full year with
the Orange Coast PCA autocross, I take
a moment to reflect back. December
2007, my second autocross was great,
yet I did not appreciate the dynamics of
the group. Some were racing with fervor
against the clock; others seemed to have
more vested in the end-of-the-year race.
Rolling the clock forward to December
2008 I was also in that position, certainly
striving to exceed my last run with grace,
precision and a better time (at least that
was the plan), but there was something
else…Many of the participants were also
working against an annual score with
plans of clenching the coveted class titles.
This mix of immediate and long-term
victory makes the aura of the December
race much different then all of the other
calendar year events. Even if you are
not one in the running for the overall
annual class awards, any individual may
still influence the outcome, especially
during the last race of the season. To

If Santa were to bring me anything
this year, besides that lump of coal
delivered last year, it would be a time

forward me to February for the Evolution
and Drivers Education schools and then
bounce me straightaway to March for
the first 2009 race. The fellowship and
sense of community will not have to wait
that long however. January 31st will be
the date for the annual Autocross party at
Walters Porsche in Riverside (Adams and
the 91). Last year I hesitated in attending
this annual event as I considered myself
a “newbie.” I now realize that this was
a poor decision. Regardless of your
number of times with the autocross clan
you should consider attending.
Personal note: I am honored to have
been asked to prepare the December
2008 autocross report, thank you Lisa.
The experience I have had over the
last year has been simply wonderful
(maybe with the exception of the two
sets of tires). Our busy lives bring us all
many responsibilities and obligations.
Autocross driving has provided me with
a new set of friends and excitement which
I sincerely look forward to month after
month. Perhaps those of you reading this
will give autocross a chance in 2009; you
will discover the magic built into these
fantastic automobiles.
2009 OCR AutoX Program – COME
Join The Fun!
The Walter’s Porsche AutoX Series is
about to kick off the 2009 season. With
the New Year another brave soul has
stepped forward to help run the OCR
AutoX program. James Buck is being
“promoted” from Chief of Equipment to
an Event Chairman. He will be assisted by
two of my favorite 2008 Event Chairmen
Bob Scheussler and Jim Harris. Mark
Trawartha will be retiring. So he thinks. I
will slip deeper into my role of Emeritus.
For 2009 the OCR AutoX Team
again has a great program planned
with more drivers training events, the
usual 10 AutoX events at El Toro, and
a couple track events. To kick off the
New Year the OCR Drivers Clinic will
be held at El Toro on February 21 st . The
Drivers Clinic is a great time to play
with your Porsche and see why “There
is no substitute!” The following day
an Auto-X practice event is planned.
While these two events are in process
the Evolution Performance Driving
School will be holding a Teen Drivers
School on Saturday and Advanced Phase
1 and 2 Auto-X Driving Schools on both
Saturday and Sunday.
The AutoX Team is made up of OCR
members just like you and me. They are a
great group of hard working individuals.
However, keep in mind these events do
not just happen. The team can always
use a little more help. So this year please
make it a point to ask how YOU might
help. This can be as simple picking
up the morning coffee and donuts or
assisting in helping the tech crew. You
could help at registration by making
sure the waivers are signed or (and this
is my favorite job) make sure the heads
are strategically located. Also, helping
unpack the equipment in the morning
and packing the truck at the end of the
day is always appreciated. Remember
it’s your club and your event.
PCA - Zone 8 Time Trials
For 2009 the Zone 8 Time Trials Team
already has the makings of a great
schedule planned. If this is the year you
want to step up to the next level here are

a boat trip to Russia before continuing
on to Paris. The Flyer was the only
car to make it to Alaska, so it had to
return to Seattle to catch the boat. Tom
feels that you must experience this
wonderful Concours at least once, and
that it cannot be beaten. It also satisfied
another item on Jerry’s Bucket List.
Late Sunday afternoon we headed
down Highway 1 to Cambria. There
we spent the night relaxing and
talking about all the great things we
had experienced. We are all ready to
go again next year. Especially since
Porsche will be the featured mark.
Anyone interested in next year should
start working on hotel reservations
in January. Race tickets and parking
corral passes can be obtained from the
Monterey Bay Region of PCA in June or
July.
