In its first issue, The Inner Edge looks at the ties between work and passions. The desire for domesticity, the need to feel ‘at home’ in the workplace seems to be the point where the vision of the contemporary man revolves around itself. There is a new, open notion of human space, the one that includes the possibility for our resources to be not predictable neither planned. Lines are comfortable and details are softened (Naturally Estel), surfaces speak of materials and textures (MoodBoard), the same piece of furniture can furnish an office or can be used as a kitchen table (the Moor table). We indulge in the forms that the history of design has by now rendered classic (Oscar Niemeyer) and we rediscover the value of comfortable elegance (Jorge Pensi). There is no separation between life and job, between passions and obsessions, neither at work nor at home. We have described the houses of the great architects and new designers, listened to those who are used to decorating public spaces on the 5 continents (Stefano Angeletti for Spiralis), and witnessed to the high-speed lunch of an architect trained to enhance the dimension of travel (Marco Casamonti). Perhaps it is a consequence of those rules created by our society, so precise and perhaps too rigid to allow us to ‘function’ properly. Public spaces are looking for something softer, more human, more emotionally sustainable. Not surprisingly, many other public spaces that are historically typed are also opening up to a more comfortable, domestic approach: restaurants in apartments in the world’s great capitals, the hosting of Airbnb.com, the home-schooling phenomenon, even the ‘new’ idea of giving birth in maternity homes. Whenever our society creates stiff ‘containers’, someone tries to dismantle them and bring them back to the variable. In The Inner Edge we talk about this softened and intimate approach. Contained, as in Estel’s polite product lines. A courteous and personal point of view that has learned to accept man in his totality. Patrizia Coggiola Nel suo primo numero, The Inner Edge guarda al legame tra lavoro e passioni. L’aspirazione alla domesticità, al sentirsi ‘come a casa’ nell’ambiente di lavoro, è il nodo attorno a cui sembra risolversi la visione che l’uomo contemporaneo aveva dato di se stesso. C’è una nozione dello spazio umano più aperta, che include la possibilità che le nostre risorse non siano pianificabili e prevedibili. Le linee si fanno accoglienti e i dettagli smussati (Naturally Estel), le superfici parlano di materia e texture (MoodBoard), gli stessi complementi arredano un ufficio come un tavolo di cucina (il tavolo More). E noi indulgiamo nelle forme che ormai la storia del design ha reso classiche (Oscar Niemeyer) e riscopriamo il valore di un’eleganza accogliente (Jorge Pensi). Non c’è separazione tra vita e lavoro, tra passioni e ossessioni, nei momenti di lavoro come tra le mura domestiche. Ce lo hanno raccontato le case dei grandi architetti e dei nuovi designer, ce lo spiega chi è abituato ad arredare spazi collettivi a cavallo tra i continenti (Stefano Angeletti per Spiralis), lo testimonia il pranzo ad alta velocità di un progettista allenato a valorizzare la dimensione del viaggio (Marco Casamonti). Forse è una conseguenza di quelle regole così precise create dalle nostre società, forse troppo rigide per il nostro buon ‘funzionamento’. Gli spazi collettivi cercano la morbidezza e una nozione dell’umano aperta, più sostenibile emotivamente. Non a caso, anche tanti altri spazi di collettività storicamente tipizzati, si aprono alla prospettiva domestica: il ristorante negli appartamenti delle grandi capitali, la ricettività di Airbnb.com, il fenomeno dell’home schooling, addirittura le ‘nuove’ nascite in case maternità. Ogni qualvolta la nostra società ha creato ‘contenitori’ univoci, si cerca di smontarli, di riportarli al variabile. In The Inner Edge parliamo di questa prospettiva addolcita e intima. Ammansita, come nei cortesi profili dei prodotti Estel. Un punto di vista gentile e personale, che ha imparato ad accogliere l’uomo nella sua totalità. These are groups of four pages that each form a small poster. You can take them apart and recompose them in whatever way you please, keeping only the content that interests you, pass them on to a colleague or forget them in the car, use them as posters behind your desk or as a starting point for your projects. The Inner Edge #1 Oscar Niemeyer: The Curve of Time Photo ©Paolo Pileggi Oscar Niemeyer for Estel: the Niemeyer Table Cover story With its metal base in relief, projecting a plastic form, Niemeyer’s unmistakable signature, this table designed for Estel is one of the few pieces the Brazilian architect dedicated to interior decorating. In 1985 Estel commissioned Oscar Niemeyer to create a conference table. What he imagined fully interpreted the dual vocation of the Italian design company, knowing how to smoothly move between home and office. The table, with both high-profile home interiors and office executive spaces in mind, is characterized by an important base: one single sculptural leg made in wood covered with brushed steel, with internal counterweight plates. Drawing strength from this pedestal’s utopian shape, modelled on Hispanic baroque curves, the Niemeyer Table is transfigured into a timeless sculpture, “a cathedral in the desert destined for the conscience of the human race”. The top can be either in floating tempered glass or in a wood finish, 50 mm thick. The collection has been expanded with rectangular double versions with clear glass top finishes paired with leather. Ciò che egli ha immaginato interpretava pienamente la duplice vocazione del brand di design italiano, ovvero di saper vivere la casa e l’ufficio in maniera fluida. Il tavolo, rivolto sia agli spazi domestici che a quelli direzionali, è caratterizzato da una base importante: una gamba scultorea realizzata in legno rivestito di acciaio spazzolato, con piastre di contrappeso interno. I piani possono essere realizzati in vetro trasparente o in essenza, nei legni naturali presenti in catalogo. Oscar Niemeyer: The Curve of Time The Estel Niemeyer table fits both in domestic and public living areas, such as executive offices. Presented in the double version, can reach a length of 4.5 meters. Saying that Oscar Niemeyer was a legend would be an understatement. Roughly 600 projects, from Rio de Janeiro to Algeria, from Paraná to Paris, have combined the rigour of modern structure with fluidity of space and sensitivity to nature. He was the first to show us the contemporary way to create a warm and engaging living space. Definire Oscar Niemeyer una leggenda sarebbe un superfluo.
