Parnelli Voting Open, Dennis DeYoung to Host Gala

“Come Sail Away” and many other hits for
Styx, and he also played a key role in the
band’s themed albums and theatrical and visually
groundbreaking shows.
“He was deeply involved in bringing Styx’s
concept albums to life in a theatrical setting,”
said Kevin Mitchell, Parnelli producer/writer.
“Throughout his career he’s put on intricate
shows, including musical theater projects. Not
included in the Wikipedia version of his life, he
possesses a hilarious offbeat sense of humor.
He will make this our best Parnellis yet.”
DeYoung’s contributions to Styx helped
propel the band to international stardom,
breaking new artistic ground as well as selling
millions of records. In 1983 the group
mounted an ambitious stage presentation
based on their rock opera Kilroy that included
an 11-minute film, which opened the show.
It served as a glimpse into the future of live
event entertainment.
DeYoung’s solo career has included more
hit songs and memorable concerts, and in 1993
he joined a touring revival of the stage musical
Jesus Christ Superstar. He’s also reworked his
music in visually creative symphonic settings.
Last year his music for The Hunchback of Notre
Dame premiered at the Bailiwick Repertory
Theater in Chicago. He’s currently working on
another musical, 101 Dalmatians, opening in
Minneapolis this fall.
DeYoung said he is excited to host the
Parnelli Awards, and is expected to talk about
his early days and how far the live event industry
has come. “I remember going out on
the road with just three light trees — and
none of them worked!” he said.
This year will feature a reunion for former
Neil Diamond crew members, starting
at 7 p.m. on Nov. 20, sponsored by Maryland
Sound International and See Factor. The dinner
and awards ceremony begins at 8 p.m.
The awards gala will also honor Jake Berry, recipient
of the Parnelli Lifetime Achievement
Award; Richard Belliveau, recipient of the Parnelli
Visionary Award and Stan Miller, recipient
of the Parnelli Audio Innovator Award.

Revised Fog Effects
Standard Available for
Public Review
NEW YORK — ESTA’s Technical Standards
Program has posted BSR E1.23 — 20XX Entertainment
Technology — Design and Execution of
Theatrical Fog Effects on its Web site for public review.
It is a proposed revision of the existing ANSI
E1.23-2006 standard related to glycol, glycerin or
white mineral oil theatrical fog effects.
The revisions propose to change the list of
fog chemicals to better match those chemicals
normally used in theatrical fog effects, and to
better define the qualifications of those in charge
of designing and executing the effects.
The proposed standard will be available for
public review at http://www.esta.org/tsp/docu
ments/public_review_docs.php through Nov. 9.
Separately, ESTA’s Rigging Working Group
recently approved the initiation of two other
projects: BSR E1.38 — 20XX, Temporary Ground-
Supported Structures Used to Support Equipment
in the Production of Outdoor Entertainment Events,
Excluding Stage Roofs, and BSR E1.39 - 20xx, Entertainment
Technology — Recommendations for
the Use of Fall Protection on Temporary Suspended
and Ground-Supported Structures.
