CHICAGO — A tribute to architect Daniel
Burnham, who is credited with drafting the
first master plan for Chicago 100 years ago,
includes two temporary pavilions designed
by two of today’s leading architects, each lit
with Iluminarc architectural lighting fixtures.
The pavilions, in Chicago’s Millennium
Park, were designed by Amsterdam-based
Ben van Berkel and Zaha Hadid of London and
lit by LD Tracey Dear of Dear Productions.
Since they opened this summer, thousands
have visited Berkel’s high gloss structure
with three scoop-like supports and
Hadid’s pavilion, which uses a silver-gray tent
fabric to cover a 7,000-piece aluminum structure,
with oblong slits along the top, which
function as skylights.
PROJECTION LIGHTS & STAGING NEWS
For Berkel’s pavilion, Dear specified 21
Ilumipod 18 and 54 Ilumipod 36 IP Optic RGB
units. They are embedded in the floor of the
pavilion and respond to an automated control
system that triggers changes in hues and
intensity depending on where people stand.
For Hadid’s pavilion, Dear also used Ilumipod
18 and Ilumipod 36 IP Optic RGB lights to
illuminate the “fluid form” that is at the heart
of that pavilion, designed by the only woman
to win the Pritzker Architecture Prize.
“It was our intent to make Hadid’s pavilion
warm while van Berkel’s is more playful,”
Dear said. Hadid’s fabric was very porous, “so
it does soak up the color, whereas van Berkel’s
pavilion has a reflective finish to bounce the
light between the two surfaces” of the floor
and roof, Dear added. Hadid’s
pavilion is lit with “dark, saturated
complementary colors”
for a more futuristic look, vs.
pastels for van Berkel’s pavilion.
“To have the opportunity
to illuminate these historic
pavilions by two of the mostrecognized
living architects is
an honor,” said Jamey Brock, director
of sales at Chauvet and
head of global sales for Iluminarc.
“When Tracey Dear called
and asked if we were ready, I
did not hesitate, and our team
responded remarkably. “
More Sponsors for Gala
LAS VEGAS—The Parnelli Award Board of
Advisors announces that more sponsors are
supporting Parnellis Awards’ ninth annual gala,
set for Nov. 20 at 8 p.m. at the Peabody Hotel in
Orlando, Fla.
“Honoring our most talented professionals
is only possible with the sponsors’ support,” says
Terry Lowe, executive producer of the Parnellis.
New Gold Sponsors include: Barco, Chaos
Visual Productions, Maryland Sound, Tour Tech
East and Ultratec Special Effects. New Silver
Sponsors include PixelRange. Maryland Sound
is also sponsoring the Neil Diamond Crew Reunion
cocktail party with See Factor. That event
starts at 7 p.m., also at the Peabody Hotel.
“I started in the entertainment business in
1975 as a kid in high school and fell in love with
this business,” says Peter Hendrickson, president
of Tour Tech East. “This event provides the opportunity
for all of us to show appreciation and
support for the efforts and personal sacrifices
these people have made. We are a proud Canadian
company and pleased to support the
Parnelli Awards.”
“Everyone here at Barco/High End Systems
is incredibly honored that Richard Belliveau has
been selected to receive the Parnelli Visionary
Award,” says Chris Colpaert, vice president of
creative lighting for Barco. “There are visionaries
in every industry, but especially within the
realm of lighting, Richard’s contributions and
innovations truly set him apart. With talent such
as his within the organization, we’re proud to
be a sponsor of this year’s Parnelli awards, and
equally excited about what Richard has in store
for us in the pipeline.”
“Ultratec Special Effects is a proud sponsor
of the 2009 Parnelli Awards,” says Marnie Styles,
vice president, sales. “These awards are a great
way of recognizing the dedication of those who
work behind the scenes and for the development
of innovative products.”
Bob See of the See Factor says that he’s cosponsoring
the cocktail party for Stan Miller and
former Diamond Crew members because from
the time he met him 45 years ago he was one
of the first who saw mixing live sound as an art
form. “Stan sees sound the way lighting people
hear lights, as in ‘more blue out of the monitors,
please,’” See says. “Having provided lighting
equipment and personnel for Neil Diamond
tours for over 18 years, we are happy to honor
all the crew members past and present.”
Jake Berry, production manager for U2, will
be receiving the Parnelli Lifetime Achievement
Award. Dennis DeYoung, one of the founders
of Styx whose recent multi-media concerts and
work in musical theater continues to feature top
live event production values, will be the MC.
