2008 Formula 1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix in
March with the 2008 Formula 1 Sinopec Chinese
Grand Prix in October also on the provisional race
schedule.
The Singapore event on 28 September heralds one of
the most exciting new developments in recent
motorsport history as the first Formula 1 Grand Prix in
history to be run at night on a 5.05 km street circuit.
“We are delighted that the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia
is the first confirmed support race for the Singapore
Grand Prix. Since we introduced the series to Asia
in 2003, we have consistently set new benchmarks,
bringing the best in one-make sportscar racing to
the region and providing exceptional motorsport
entertainment to fans.” says Christer Ekberg,
Managing Director of Porsche Asia Pacific.
The series will also visit Zhuhai as well as Indonesia’s
Sentul Circuit, with the season-closer once again
provisionally scheduled as part of November’s Macau
Grand Prix.
Eighteen drivers have so far been confirmed for next
year, all of whom will compete in identical 997-based
Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars.
The new car, built by Porsche Motorsport in Weissach,
Germany, boasts a 420 bhp engine, an increase of
20 bhp over the previous model, additional torque, and
an upgraded six gear sequential gearbox. In addition
to the engine upgrades, the car abandons ABS and
sports design modifications including the bumper
panel from the GT3 road car.
The Porsche Carrera Cup Asia 2008 roars into action
with a special season launch to be held in Singapore
on 14 March 2008. The historic Singapore Cricket
Club plays host to the event which is part of the 2008
Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix race build
up and also the 20th anniversary celebrations of the
Porsche Club Singapore.
Traditionally held at Sepang Int. Circuit, this year’s
launch is bigger than ever with a Porsche convoy
including a Carrera GT, a 911 GT3 RSR and the
Cayenne S Transsbyeria as well as road and heritage
cars driven by Singapore Porsche Club members,
leading the way to the Padang.
Visitors will be among the first to lay eyes on the new
Cayenne GTS and the new 911 GT3 Cup car model
as the cars will be launched during the event. All the
cars will be on display for the guests to enjoy. To add
to the racing atmosphere there will also be an MC
and music, giant TV screen with race footage and
information videos, information on the
2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix, the
Porsche Club Singapore and the Porsche Carrera
Cup Asia, plus a food and beverage tent.
Another great event highlight will be the very first
Porsche Kids Driving School in Singapore. Kids
between the age of 5 to 10 will get the chance to
sign up for the Porsche Kids Driving School including
a short theory lesson on basic traffic rules and signs
as well as a driving session on 911 pedal cars on a
road track. After successful completion, the kids will
receive their own Porsche Kids Driving license.
VIP guests and media will meet the teams and drivers
of the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia Season 2008 during
